Tuesday 30 December 2014

A progress report ! - Thursday 11th to Wednesday 31st December 2014

Well I'm still alive......but still suffering ! Just need to man-up a bit !

Been out a few times but nothing spectacular. A short walk from Staveley on Christmas Day and then to an orienteering event with Russ on Boxing Day; I did the 1.5km yellow event, along with the kids !!

Went to watch the Wansfell Fell Race on 28th, a glorious day and made it onto the lower slopes.

I'm hoping for a significant improvement in the next few weeks; running feels a long way off for he at the moment :-(

Wednesday 17 December 2014

Hernia Operation - Wednesday 10th December 2014

So it's the big day, feel a bit worried and very lonely but that's tough, it's going happen so best get on with it !

Blog will be a bit quiet for a while, won't be doing much so no point in blogging about nowt !

Pilates - Tuesday 9th December 2014

Last one for a while so I make it count.

Training - Monday 8th December 2014

Not sure why, but I just run steady laps tonight - perhaps I know it's not worth making the effort as about to have 6 weeks of no running.

Potter Fell - Sunday 7th December 2014

A frustrating day and a lot of wasted time. Eventually head over to Staveley for a run to Potter Tarn, Gurnal Dubs, Potter Fell and Brunt Knott.

Back into Staveley for coffee and cake in Wilf's.

Langdale Christmas Pudding 10k - Saturday 6th December 2014

A very cold start but a beautiful clear sky and sunshine. Head over to Langdale but it soon clouds over and becomes a cold a gloomy day. Over 600 runners in the race today and the start is delayed which is frustrating given how cold it is.

I manage to start on the front line but run well. It's the usual route, along the valley, through the Timeshare, through Elterwater and out onto the Common and then back along the valley.

I finish 20th, 10 seconds quicker than last year; I am pleased with this.

Friday 5 December 2014

River / Canal Run - Friday 5th December 2014

Out at lunchtime for a run along the river to Hawes Bridge and back along the canal. A cold day and very few people about.

Strengthening Session - Thursday 4th December 2014

Another of John's sessions. A mixture of warm-up, Pilates, drills, shuttles and stretching.

Training - Wednesday 3rd December 2014

A rush tonight, my train back from Edinburgh arrives late into Oxenholme so straight to training.

We head up to the golf course for 5 long reps; it's a very cold night but it doesn't stop me building up a sweat.

Pilates - Tuesday 2nd December 2014

Another Pilates session, seems to go ok.

Potter Tarn Run - Monday 1st December 2014

Out with Russ tonight. From Staveley, along river and up to Potter Tarn.  It's a clear night but nit as cold as I expected. The. Head back to the village, just out for an hour but good fun.

Lyth Valley Ride - Sunday 30th November 2014

Up and out early, usual route from home and no punctures today.

Windermere Road, Brigsteer Road, Brigsteer, Levens, Brigsteer, Underbarrow, Crook, Staveley (breakfast stop), Bowston, Burneside and then home.

A good ride out, but chilly feet today !

Helvellyn & The Dodds Race Route - Saturday 29th November 2014

So a big day planned and I'm a bit apprehensive about this, have started to get use to short races ! But the weather is good and despite a power cut at More (which resulted in no pastry !) I am keen to set off from Blencathra cricket club.

I climb steady and then manage to make good progress along the Dodds in excellent conditions. I am soon on Raise, then Lower Man and Helvellyn; a great place to be today. It's the same way back on this route and still plenty of climb. I make the effort to run every climb on the way back and succeed.

The last descent is tough, I go steady as I really don't want to trash my legs. Out for exactly 4 hours, then into Keswick for some Christmas shopping.

Sunday 30 November 2014

Scar Run - Friday 28th November 2014

Out for a lunchtime run on Scar, don't have long but good to be out.

River / Canal lunch run and evening Strengthening Session - Thursday 27th November 2014

Head out at lunch for a muddy run along the river and back along the canal then in the evening I go to John's Strenghtening session....build up a sweat there and that's just holding the plank position, not helped by a distraction !

Training - Wednesday 26th November 2014

I run to KK with Chris and then to golf course for 5 long reps. Straight home from there which makes a 17k evening. It goes ok but could always be better !

Pilates - Tuesday 25th November 2014

A bit different tonight, we do a routine and then repeat it another three times; I quite like that.

Work - Monday 24th November 2014

Head in to our Cambridge office for an hour or two and then to Trustees meeting. That goes well then North on A1 to another meeting near Stamford. Then A1 again and a long journey home. No food at home and want to delay seeing the mess that was left for me so straight to Thai and a lonely table for one !

Loughrigg & Silver Howe - Sunday 23rd November 2014

I get the feeling early on that the day is not going to go to plan and I will be much later heading to Cambridge than I need to be.

Anyway, we head over to Ambleside, four legged friend too, to run the old Loughrigg / Silver Howe race route. It's a lovely day and the running is good, plus the views are stunning.

Once back at the car it's a quick cuppa and then home to shower and head South; house is left in a mess (!!!!!), never like going away with that on my mind (OCD !!); and it's a rubbish journey. Felt bit like a Top Gear challenge, every time I got held up in traffic and I was working out the average speed I would need to achieve and then looking very carefully for speed cameras....(no letter(s) yet !).

Sort of a fun day !

Kendal Mountain Festival TraiƂ Race - Saturday 22nd November 2014

Now in its third year, and second year on the Scout Scar route. A big Helm turnout and a special guest, Ueli Steck the legendary Swiss speed climber, I even grab a quick start line chat with him.

I get close to pole position but soon fade after Beast Banks; Craig and Paul away and both have fantastic races. I work hard and catch Ueli but his daredevil descent on the slippery cobbled ginels put him back in front of me. Anyway, he is superhuman so I can cope with that.

It's a good race, really well supported and great to be starting and finishing in the centre of town on a busy Saturday morning.

Tuesday 25 November 2014

River / Canal Run - Friday 21st November 2014.

A steady and uneventful run....but there's nowt wrong with that.

Strengthening Session - Thursday 20th November 2014

John B has organised a 'Strengthening Session'; it's good: a warmup, some drills, some Pilates, some shuttle runs and some stretching. It works well and I'll be back for more.

Training - Wednesday 19th November 2014

We head up to the golf course. For several reasons it is a better week, I work hard but could do better !

Pilates - Tuesday 18th November 2014

A tough one tonight but I get it.

Potter Tarn and Potter Fell - Monday 17th November 2014

I forego training but instead head over to Staveley for a run to Potter Tarn and Potter Fell. A dry and clear evening, good to be out running offroad in the dark. But our detour to the fish & chip shop on the way back into the village proves disappointing....closed on Mondays !

Arnside Fell Race - Sunday 16th November 2014

A new race for me, a bit frustrating as the weather is great and my thoughts are of being on the high fells. But I'm committed so head over to Hollins Farm. It's a good little race, well supported and tasty cakes ! I run ok, but can't keep my streak of beating Sean Robinson from Howgill; I close him down in the climbs but in the flat and the descents he is much stronger.

Only 5.5 miles and 919' climb.

A busy day - Saturday 15th November 2014

Up and out early on bike; head out from home, Brigsteer, Levens, Brigsteer, Underbarrow, Crook, Staveley....Wilf's for a full meaty breakfast, Bowston, Burneside and home. A good ride out and a top breakfast ! Then out with Barnus, then to Rheged to watch Sca Fell - The Life of a Mountain (well worth watching) and then into Keswick for a potter and some food.

Friday 14 November 2014

River / Canal Run - Friday 14th November 2014

Again I avoid the bad weather and head out at lunchtime for a run along the river and back along the canal; it's not been a great few days but things start to look up. And yes, I do pay the price for those bloomin press-ups !

Scar Run and Pilates - Thursday 13th November 2014

I dodge the foul weather and head out at lunch for a run on the Scar; usual route, a good run.

Then later to Pilates, a good class but I know the press-ups will hurt tomorrow.

Training - Wednesday 12th November 2014.

Not a good evening.

London - Tuesday 11th November 2014

A long day, South on the 06:21 from Oxenholme and North on the 18:30 from Euston. But a successful day, Rathbone's new strategy, I like what I see and hear; exciting times ahead.

Training - Monday 11th November 2014

Not in the zone tonight, raced Saturday and a long day out yesterday; but it's a good session and I get through it.

Remembrance Day, Great Gable - Sunday 9th November 2014

It's tradition, Great Gable for the Remembrance Day service. Joined by KA, we head out from Langdale. It's a long trek in from here, about 6.5 miles and plenty of climb. But I like the route, Mickleden, Rossett Ghyll, Angle Tarn, Esk Hause, Sprinkling Tarn, Styhead and then the climb up Gable.

On the way I worry that we might not make it for 11am, but actually we time it well and arrive just in time to fire-up the Jetboil and add an extra layer. The service is brief, but with hundreds of people standing silent on the summit of this fantastic fell, the atmosphere is moving.

We head back the same way, the rocks are very greasy and we take advantage of any grass or scree lines. At Esk Hause we detour to Allen Crags, another Wainwright tick for KA. Then back to the Cali parked at the ODG; not the most appealing of refreshment stops so it's off to Chesters for a late lunch and then a shopping trip to Cheryl and Russ's shop in Windermere; a good day.

Dunnerdale Fell Race - Saturday 8th November 2014

A new race for me, recce'd it last weekend and just over a year ago; I'm confident of the route and despite a horrid forecast, conditions are reasonable.

The usual big Helm turnout for this race, helped or not-helped as it's the last of the Club Champ races. Parking is not great, perhaps car my have been better than Cali but it proves useful weekend after weekend as a place to change both before and after races and runs, and somewhere to drink coffee and prepare.

Anyway back to the race, I feel ok and set off strong, ahead of Craig and Garry; the latter draws level on the steep road that leads to the fells, I crank it up a bit more, it's there to crank, and pull away but he gets his revenge later. Craig overtakes once in the fells, he's strong and finishes 3rd V40.

The climbs go well, the descents less so; it's wet underfoot but not wearing a jacket does not prove to be a mistake. All goes well, but the last descent is gnarly and I tackle this like an old women. GB passes me, out of control, and despite my getting past him on the grassy track he again takes the lead and beats me by 5 seconds.

But I'm pleased with my performance, things are starting to look up. Some great results by Helm, including Men's and Ladies Team and 1st Lady V50.

Pies and prize giving are a good way to end the day, plus the pub stop in Broughton on way home.

Sunday 9 November 2014

River / Canal Run - Friday 7th November 2014

Head out at lunch for the usual river / canal run. Good to get out.

Turbo Trainer- Thursday 6th November 2014

Another session on the turbo trainer - it serves a purpose !

Training - Wednesday 5th November 2014

Golf course tonight; 5 reps and great views of the fireworks at the Castle. A good training session, I work hard and it works !

Loughrigg & Pilates - Tuesday 4th November 2014

A good forecast and I take the morning off for a run over Loughrigg. But start with a bacon roll at More and then to Ambleside.

Park Under Loughrigg and then follow race route to the summit. Great views and the first dusting of snow on the higher fells.

Drop down the back and then along to Loughrigg Tarn and to Lilly Tarn. A good run out and then an early lunch at More.

Pilates in the evening, a good class and I get it.

Turbo Trainer - Monday 3rd November 2014

Don't want to be at training tonight so half an hour on the turbo trainer - it's not much fun !

Dunnerdale Recce - Sunday 2nd November 2014

Wasn't expecting to make it out today but manage to get over to Broughton Mills early afternoon.

Have a steady run around the race route - it's a real cracker. Conditions are good and no problem with route choice.

Then into Broughton for a quick pint.

Birthday Race...Really Wild Boar Fell Race - Saturday 1st November 2014

It's my birthday and I'm up and out early. I race the Really Wild Boar Fell Race, first ran this back in 2011 and then again in the snow and ice in 2012.

A few squally showers before the race but conditions are ideal. I'm feeling good, albeit a year older than this time yesterday, and think it might be a good race.

I set off at a good pace and manage to run all of the climb. I pass Shaun Robinson, who I often battle with, as it gets steeper and then pull away. Once at the summit I know I need to keep the pressure on myself and have a good descent. I do and once on the track I push hard, still doing battle with Shaun, and finish strong.

I am pleased with my result, about 40 seconds down from 2011 but that's progress. Then off to pub for a pint and prizes....sadly not holiday for me !

Friday 31 October 2014

River / Canal Run - Friday 31st October 2014

Not been this way for a while. It's a balmy 20c out there today, not what I expect at this time of the year. Usual route and uneventful, but I run well....perhaps that does make it eventful.

Turbo - Thursday 30th October 2014

Turbo trainer is back in action - I stick at it for 30 mins....on a 2 mins steady and 1 min hard regime. What fun...not !

Training - Wednesday 29th October 2014

On the Castle again, Billy in charge and it's a short and fast rep night. What does this mean, well, a short fast, flat sprint and then into the shortest and steepest climb to the Castle, recover on way down. Sounds easy....x 10...no, it's not !!!

Pilates - Tuesday 28th October 2014

I switch to the later session today as I have been in Edinburgh and late home. This week I get it, perhaps it's the change of scenery !!!

Training - Monday 27th October 2014

Back to QKS tonight; it's mild and hard work...what more can I say !

Bike Ride - Sunday 26th October 2014

Bike rides at this time of year can be hard work. Less than a mile from home I get a flatty, the wheels are tished up and, very soon, as are my hands ! It always worries me using my spare tube so early on, what happens if I get another....think positive !

One of my usual routes today; from home, Brigsteer Road, Brigsteer, Underbarrow, Crook, Staveley....latte & pastry....Burneside, Hollins Lane and home.

Good to be out and I manage to avoid further punctures.

Three Shires Race Route - Saturday 25th October 2014

So Russ and I decide to head over to Little Langdale to run the Three Shires Race route. Had expected better weather but as we park the rain comes down, more horizontal than vertical !

But, what I have already forgotten to say is, that Russ very kindly offered bacon rolls before we set off; no hesitation to accept and a very disappointed Craig had to decline the offer as he was XC racing today.

Back to it, soon after we start we detour to Cathedral Quarry, not been here before - it's amazing and well worth a visit. Then onto climbing Wetherlam, perhaps my least favourite climb in the Lakes. I dig in, the weather turns more grim and it is a big relief when we make the summit; but not conditions to linger so straight on towards Prison Band and Swirls Hows, now that climb is more like it.

At the summit the wind is even stronger, we head towards the rebuilt memorial at the Halifax Bomber wreckage and then Russ gives me much need navigation tuition....thanks for that Russ ! Down to Three Shire Stone....yes I manage to navigate successfully, and a steady climb to Blisco; the weather improves a bit and on the descent I even decide to take my leggings off.

The final sting is the climb up Lingmoor, but I feel good and push on. Little Langdale looks far away from here but it's a surprisingly quick descent and we are soon back at the Cali for tea and mince pies...yes, it's that time of year again. Hawkshead Brewery on way home too...beer and tapas, think I return home heavier than I started today !

Friday 24 October 2014

A rest day - Friday 24th October 2014

Decide to take it easy today, thoughts are elsewhere.

Scout Scar - Thursday 23rd October 2014

Head out in the wind and rain at lunchtime for a run on the Scar. Meet up at Helsington Church and have a good run along the top and back again.

Training - Wednesday 22nd October 2014

On the Castle again and, ahead of training I do three things different !

1. I buy some "energy"
2. I eat a banana instead of a bowl of cereal
3. I want to train well

Whether it was any one of these different approaches or a combination I'm not sure - but it worked; I felt I trained well and had a little spring in my step....not said that for a while.

Loughrigg - Tuesday 21st October 2014

I have some holiday to use up so take the morning off and head over to Ambleside. A good run up and over Loughrigg, fighting against the tail end of the hurricane but not as bad as expected. From the summit, drop down to the road and then around Loughrigg Tarn and back over to Lilly Tarn.

Then an early lunch and potter in Ambleside before a mad dash to work.

Training - Monday 20th October 2014

So our last week at KK before we head to QKS. My effort is limited tonight, not intentional but just find myself taking it easy. Maybe that will do me some good.

FRA Relays, Middleton Fell - Sunday 19th October 2014

So after a big build-up and numerous recce's, it's off to the races ! Forecasts not great, very windy and possibility of heavy showers.  I'm V40 team captain and running leg 3, the nav leg, with GB.

All goes well, the team arrive....always a good start and Phil Rigby puts in a good effort on leg 1; Paul and Craig head off on leg 2 and run really strongly and then GB and I are off. The leg is surprisingly short and navigation straight forward but I work hard to keep with Garry and he's definitely holding back for me. So I guess a bit disappointing for me but Jonny on leg 4 puts in a fine effort and we finish about 12th Vet team overall. I'm pleased with that.

It's a good, but long, day out and the 5 other Helm Teams all run well, especially the ladies and Dave's Mixed team.

Btw, I still have a pile of left behind kit....that will teach me to disappear when it's time to take down the team tent !!

Longsleddale Ride - Saturday 18th October 2014

Head out mid afternoon for a ride from home to Sadgill, the head of Longsleddale valley. It's a beautiful valley and one which sees little traffic.

Dry and not overly cold but breezy, a round trip of just over 20 miles.

Monday 20 October 2014

Potter Tarn - Friday 17th October 2014

An evening run with Russ. I don't want to go too far as important race on Sunday but have been busy all day and want some fresh air.

Out along river and head up to the tarn; then short route back down to Mill Yard. Just what I needed.

Pilates - Thursday 16th October 2014

A late call and I head over to Windermere for a catch-up class. I always seem to 'get it' here, not sure what's different :-/

FRA Relay Recce and Training - Wednesday 15th October 2014

A cool, breezy day and time for one last look around the fells above Middleton. We park at the official start and follow the flags through the fields to the open fell. We locate the control marker by the fallen tree and then the hard work begins.

A big pull up to CP 2 and then easier running to the Calf; steady downhill from there, past the stone cairn and down to the control marker at the path junction. We try different routes from there to the fell gate, not much in it and we suspect that the main path may well be flagged on race day.

Steady back to car and then into Kirkby Lonsdale for brunch at Plato's.

Later, head to training. We spend some of the session on a strengthening routine and then to the Castle for a shorter, but no easier, session.

Tuesday 14 October 2014

Pilates - Tuesday 14th October 2014

Don't get this tonight either.......come on, get a grip man !

Training - Monday 13th October 2014

Just don't get it tonight. Someone comments to me that they feel that their legs rarely hurt because they don't have the energy to get to that stage......that sums up perfectly where I am too.

FRA Relay Recce - Sunday 12th October 2014

Misty morning but I have the feeling it will soon clear; I'm right, Middleton is chilly but basked in sun. Seven of us head out to recce leg 2, the longer leg. We check out different lines, some better than others, and enjoyed the steadier pace and lack of pressure. A good run out.

Then later head out on Scout Scar for a 6 mile run, that doesn't go well !

Ride - Saturday 11th October 2014

Feeling better so head out on bike in the afternoon. From home, Brigsteer Road, Brigsteer, Brigsteer Wood (where I shelter for 10 minutes due to a torrential downpour), Levens, Brigsteer, Underbarrow, Crook, Staveley (no coffee and cake stop today), Burneside, Hollins Lane......puncture....Windermere Road and home.

Feel good, maybe shedding a few pounds helps !

Friday 10 October 2014

Hopefully next week will be better - Friday 10th October 2014

I'm not well and stay off work, that's very rare for me.

Things get worse - Thursday 9th October 2014

No run today, a visit to the Docs and out for dinner but don't feel great; I think a bug has been manifesting all week and I'm not well during the night.

Training - Wednesday 8th October 2014

Back in town and now meet in Kirbie Kendal school. Just a short run out to the Castle tonight. It's a bit wet and very dark. Top tip, if you have a spare headtorch and lend one to someone, keep the best one for yourself.....I will, next time !

Only six reps but I don't feel good and run very badly. On the way back we get drenched, why couldn't it have waited just a few minutes ?!

River / Canal Run & Pilates - Tuesday 7th October 2014

Head out at lunchtime, usual river / canal route. But a pleasant surprise, I see Salmon jump in the River Kent; an absolutely stunning sight and a first for me.

Pilates in the evening, first time in three weeks and my flexibility and strength have definitely suffered.

The start of a real tish week - Monday 6th October 2014

Little goes right today and that sets the tone for the week ahead. Don't really want to say anymore about this.

IHR - Sunday 5th October 2014

I'm part of the Vet Team and am paired with Jonny for leg 1. That really suits me, a shorter faster leg and good to get it over with and then enjoy the day.

Conditions are ideal for us, a little low cloud, dry'ish and not too breezy. This year we start from the playing fields in Patterdale, this must surely add considerably to the leg (!). We run well and all goes well. We finish in 20th, with Helm Elite in 19th !

My camper has kindly been driven to Hartsop, that works well and we then follow the race; to Kirkstone, Brotherswater and back to the finish.

Our Team continue to run well and we finish 20th overall, I think that a credible achievement.  Full results: http://www.sportident.co.uk/results/2014/IHMR2014Results.pdf

Our Elite struggles and ladies do ok. But it's a good day out, and even manage another visit to Chesters on the way home !

Nav Training - Saturday 4th October 2014

I instruct on a Navigation training day; theory in the morning and then out with the group in the afternoon to put it all into practise; Boredale Hause and Angle Tarn area, familiar terrain for me but not for the participants. A rewarding day.

Friday 3 October 2014

IHR Leg 1 Recce - Friday 3rd October 2014

I'm now running the leg with Jonny, so we head over to Hartsop to recce the leg together. The weather is fowl there, Kirkstone Pass seems to be the watershed, dry and bright to the South, low cloud and wet to the North.

A steady run along the valley and then even steadier to Boredale Hause. It's rough from there to Angle Tarn but route finding and route choice are good. Then a short climb and cut right to the top of the ghyll. We eventually decide on a plan and are soon running down the track back to Hartsop.

A worthwhile trip out.

Carn Na Drochaide - Thursday 2nd October 2014

Last day in Scotland so decide to climb another Corbett....this just might catch on with me ! A short drive, past Linn of Dee to the road end, Linn of Quoich. Just me a very smart looking M3 in the parking area....but he doesn't have a cooker in his vehicle....I do, so have a cuppa before I set off.

I follow the River Quoich for a few kilometres and the cut up on a small path to the minor summit of Carn Na Criche. Easy walking along a broad ridge, but again battling into the wind, leads to the Corbett summit at 818m.

My guidebook suggests a path to start with but then knee deep heathery; actually the path continues all the way back to the track, that's a relief.

Only a short outing, back to Braemar for a quick bit of shopping and then head home, via Tiso for a late lunch.

My next trip to Scotland will be a wee bit more organised and structured; but perhaps a few easy days out might have been good for me.

Sgor Mor - Wednesday 1st October 2014

A short drive along to Linn of Dee, the first few miles follow the route of the Lairig Ghru race, which I ran last year for the third time

Linn of Dee is a stunning place and quiet at this time of year. I follow the River Dee to White Bridge and then follow it North West before heading up steeper ground to the granite outcrops on the summit of Sgor Mor (813m). The views down to the Lairig Ghru and to the big Cairngorm summits are spectacular.

Then over a couple of smaller tops before a very heathery descent back to Linn of Dee. A good little circuit, another breezy day and would have been tough going on the higher summits.

Creag nan Gabhar - Tuesday 30th September 2014

So need to drive today, it does add 4 miles of road walking but it's still not going to be a long day out.  So South along the A93 to Auchallater Farm before heading off on a track into Glen Callater.

It's dry, cooler than yesterday and very breezy, but cloud is high and its dry. I soon climb onto the ridge and follow this for a few kilometres to the summit. No other walkers about, but can hear stalkers in the distance !

Then a short drop down to another track and a long walk out of Glen Callater, back to the A93. So not a long day out but another tick and time to browse in Braemar and check out the new coffee shop, The Bothy.

Ben Gulabin - Monday 29th September 2014

So I head North in the Cali, first stop Tiso on the outskirts of Perth....porridge and then eggs on toast, now that's a good way to start a trip.

Then on to Spittal of Glenshee and time to stretch my legs. I am lacking any real plan or motivation on this trip, I have just 5 munros left to climb, one big day out but the forecast is not favourable for that this week so a loose plan to climb a few Corbetts (2500' to 2999').

Ben Gulabin is just a short climb, mainly on a track. It's not the most spectacular of routes but fits in well today. The views from the summit, North to the Cairngorms are stunning; it's good to be out.

Then back to the Cali and up to Glenshee ski area, it's a steep climb but the twin turbo, 180bhp makes easy work of it. Down to Braemar, and book into one of my favourite sites for the next few nights.

Langdale Horseshoe Recce - Sunday 28th September 2014

It's not a great forecast but KA and I decide to recce this race route, although neither of us will probably get to race it this year. It's not as cool as it looks and we soon build up a head of steam climbing to the left of Stickle Ghyll to Stickle Tarn.

Visibility here in not much ! We climb up the back of Pavey Ark and then KA leads us on a bearing to  what would be the checkpoint on Thunacar Knott. Another bearing fro here takes us to Martcrag Moor and a descent to cross Stake Pass. We follow the BG route up through Rossett Pike and then OCT route to Angle Tarn and Esk Hause.

The trod below Esk Pike is wet and trudge, despite it being dry for months...KA manages to go in ankle deep...messy Duck ! Then up to Ore Gap, visibility is still poor so we follow the main path to Bowfell and down to Three Tarns. Decision time, we nearly opt to head down the Band but decide to push on, just in case either of us do race. But again we follow the main path rather than trying to find the trod around the back of the Crinkles.

We find the main summit (and checkpoint) easily and then head towards the Bad Step, however, we skirt this on an intricate path that we both know.  Then a contour and good running towards Red Tarn and the last climb of the day to Pike O'Blisco. The trods from here are obviously, it was Three Shires just a week ago, down to the cattle grid, campsite and back to ODG.

We're out for a long time, but we had both been out yesterday and conditions were not ideal and we needed to concentrate.

 Then to Chester's for a late lunch.....delicious.

LDWA Lakeland Four Passes - Saturday 27th September 2014

Last ran this three years ago, with KA and RC back them just RC today. It's a great route and we decide on a plan to take it steady and enjoy the day.

From Rosthwaite we head down Seathwaite and then to the first checkpoint at Stockley Bridge. Weather is ok and I get to try out my new Inov-8 running shorts. Then on to Styhead and down to the second checkpoint at Wasdale Head. Russ gets into gear on the rough decent, no surprise there !

Then a long, steady climb to Blacksail Pass, two of four, and then down to remote Ennerdale and Black Sail Youth Hostel. It turns a bit wet here and we decide to put on jackets, this should make it stop and it does ! Up and over Scarth Gap Pass, a rough descent takes us to Gatescarth Farm, time to refuel. Sandwiches, rice pudding and fruit cocktail, just what I need to get me up and over Honister Pass.

Much to my surprise I bump into a work colleague from our Liverpool office on the climb, it's a small world. Russ picks up again on the rough descent to the pass...yes, we descend to the pass ! Quick running from here leads us back to Rosthwaite. 18 miles and plenty of climbing. A good day out, thanks Russ.

Friday 26 September 2014

Scout Scar Run - Friday 26th September 2014

Head out at lunchtime in the sun, park at Brigsteer Woods and head up on to Scar. A slightly shorter route as I have a big day tomorrow but it's good to be out.

Lunch out - Thursday 25th September 2014

Had planned to run today but go to the Wheatsheaf for lunch instead - might not help much with my fitness but beer, good food and good company lifts the spirits.

Training - Wednesday 24th September 2014

More going backwards than forwards, a frustrating night. I think what Billy said to me on Monday at training is true, just not sure how to deal with this.

Rest - Tuesday 23rd September 2014

Not in the mood today so it becomes a rest day.

Monday 22 September 2014

Training - Monday 22nd September 2014

Not sure if this was sensible but I go anyway. But I don't overdo it, it hurts but I don't come away feeling any worse !

More Wainwrights - Sunday 21st September 2014

Legs in bits again but that's not going to stop me getting out today. So with KA I head over to Patterdale for some more Wainwright ticks.

Up to Boredale Hause, then Place Fell, not a new one as we have been here before. Down to Boredale and a quick zip over into Martindale so that we can add in an extra summit, Steel Knotts. Wainwright describes the summit as only being accessible to the "agile walker".....we manage it 😜

Next stop is Hallin Fell, a very popular summit as just a short walk from the road, but the views are stunning. Then we head back, down to Sandwick and the shore path, which is not flat, back to Patterdale, via tea, cake and fizz at Side Farm.

A stunning day and much warmer than expected; 2 new 'ticks' for KA.

Sca Fell Pike Fell Race - Saturday 20th September 2014

A club championship race this year and one which I had pre-entered. It's only short but brutal enough; a good Helm turnout and weather ok but the cloud base is down to about 1,500'.

Lee and Craig are fired up and GB is grinning ear-to-ear as usual, I'm just thinking about surviving ! The start is flat but soon leads into a rising and rough path; disappointing that dome racers feel the need to climb fences rather than use stiles.....are those few seconds really going to make that much difference; if they are, get fitter !

Then off path and the real work starts, climb to the stile and then it's a grind up the ridge of Lingmell. Into the mist and I follow a line of racers, Brian and GB just ahead and I dig in for the climb to England's highest summit. Not actually very sure of the line we take and decide on following the main path on the return.

Lee passes, in the top 3 and Craig also running well. I overtake Brian just before the summit and then work on descending. After the rocky path, I pick up the trod which leads over to the shoulder of Lingmell and find myself catching Jonny and GB. I overtake but can't keep ahead of Jonny, he gets back in front close to the finish and I have nothing left to close the gap.

Not a bad race but, as always seems to be the case, could do better. Lee is 4th, Craig 3rd V40 and Brian 1st V60.

It's good to be in Wasdale, should have planned it better and stayed over in the Cali.

Saturday 20 September 2014

London - Thursday 18th & Friday 19th September 2014

All work and no play.

Training - Wednesday 17th September 2014

I'm still suffering, this must being starting to sound boring.....it is for me too.  I don't train well, let's blame it on the cold !

FRA Relay Recce and Pilates - Tuesday 16th September 2014

Probably the last time I do this sort of thing; I take the morning off work and head over to Barbon to recce various bits of the FRA Relay legs. Run in to Eskholme Crag (CP 2 of leg 2), then on to CP 4 of leg 1 (and CP 2 of leg 4.....this is getting confusing). Then a quick look down towards CP 3 of leg 2 and on to the trig, the cairn and then the fallen tree.

From there, just a run back to Barbon, which is most of leg 2 CP 1 to CP 2.  A warm and clear day but I feel rubbish, just can't shake off this cold. In to the village shop for a slow and then rushed lunch.  Make it in to work, late !!

Then to Pilates in the evening, planks and roll downs are not good with a cold !

Monday 15 September 2014

Nout today - Monday 15th September 2014

Am I the only one that really suffers when I get a cold ?!

River / Canal Run - Sunday 14th September 2014

Late afternoon I manage a run from Natland, along the canal to Levens Bridge and back along the river; really don't feel great again.

Fairfield Horseshoe - Saturday 13th September 2014

Not much goes right for me today; I should be racing but I don't and I feel rubbish.

I manage a very steady round of Fairfield, the weather is onside but that's about the only thing that is.

Friday 12 September 2014

Ride to work - Friday 12th September 2014

Logistics ! Car was left at work yesterday but needs to be at the garage for 8am...not ideal. But I have a bike and it's a glorious morning so the 8 miles to work is no great hardship. Dump the bike in the office, grab the car keys and down to Lindale to drop car in for a service and expensive wheel bearing replacement ! But I do get to have a new A3 for the day.

Manage to also fit in lunch at the Wheatsheaf and a Physio appointment with John. Suffering late  afternoon, seem to have cold-like symptoms and they come on very quickly so forget the idea of a further ride after work and decide to spend the evening at home catching up on things.

Work - Thursday 11th September 2014

Work gets in the way today; an early start and off to Liverpool and then back to Levens for more meetings. No time to fit in a run, but I can't complain as I have dinner at Rogan & Co in Cartmel.....that's a bit special :-)

Far Eastern Fells and Training - Wednesday 10th September 2014

So settled weather this week and I decide to take a day off. Head over to Hartsop (for a change !) and take a steady climb up to Hayeswater; then to Rest Dodd and an out and back to The Nab, more Wainwright ticks. Back over towards Brock Crags before again checking out the IHR descent route and back to Hartsop. Then lunch at the Mortal Man in Troutbeck, very pleasant.

Later I head to training; what I didn't mention above is that I as STILL SUFFERING from the Ben race......that really does have a lot to answer for ! Training is tough, a Fartlek session over and around Procter land, I hang on but that's about it.

Pilates - Tuesday 9th September 2014

I am still suffering, legs in bits and absolutely no flexibility - it's a struggle !

Training - Monday 8th September 2014

I head along to training as I need to chat to a couple of people about the Relays. That done, I then get into some very steady laps of the playing fields. My legs are trashed, I can manage no more; but that having been said, I notch up 6 miles.

Sunday 7 September 2014

IHR Leg 1 & Wainwrights - Sunday 7th September 2014

A late night but I'm up and out soon after 7; a glorious morning. KA and I head over to Hartsop and have a steady warm-up along the valley. Kath has just finished a night shift and I had the Ben race yesterday, neither are ideal preparation for a run on the fells today.

We climb to Boredale Hause but then detour to Beda Head, Angle Tarn Crags (both to the North and the South summits), Angle Tarn and a further detour to Brock Crags. Then it's all downhill which really isn't great for my legs !! But we make it and grab lunch at More on the way home.

Good to get out but legs now fully trashed.

Ben Nevis Fell Race - Saturday 6th September 2014

So for my 5th consecutive year I am in the race, and what a race. There's nothing else quite like it, yes that are much longer races and yes there are races with much more climbing. But in the UK there just can't be a race that has such a relentless climb followed by a relentless decent - it's a killer of a race.

The forecast wasn't great but, camped at Glen Nevis campsite, we wake to a dry, still and misty morning, so perhaps again the weather will be better than forecast. I am less nervous than usual and don't have the usual feeling of impending doom - that might sounds a bit melodramatic but it's true, so it's good to be a bit more chilled today.

A little drizzle and low cloud does not change my mood and by 1pm it is dry and we are piped to the start line.....and over 500 of us are off ! The road passes quickly but, very early on, my left Achilles is giving me grief, not just stiff but painful. Once on the track I work hard but realise it's going to be hard and not quick.  When the track gets steeper, I lean into the climb and this is where it goes further wrong.....using lower back muscles to climb is not a great technique and as soon as I try to straighten I realise why, I am in a lot of discomfort and it's not good.

But I'm not turning back so just get on with it, the trod around to Red Burn is the worst bit and after that it improves a bit and I just keep climbing until the summit is in sight, a relief but short lived as the hard work now begins. I put the effort in, it goes ok but could be, an once was,so much better. Red Bank is wet and slippery, even for the brand new Inov-8 X-Talon 212's.

Back on the track I keep working hard and am relieved once I cut the zig-zags and on to the easier terrain. Once on the road I manage to pick up some speed and regain a few places and even  put in a good spring around the shinty pitch at the finish.  So I think I finish in about 2:10, if so just a couple of minutes slower than last year but a long way off my PB.

Russ has a steady run and isn't disappointed with his result, or at least doesn't let it show like I do. I am frustrated and disappointed with my running and desperately want to I'm improve.

Home by 10pm, a good trip.

Heading North - Friday 5th September 2014

So heading North to Fort William this afternoon for the big race tomorrow. Meetings to attend first and I manage to sneak in breakfast at More - that was a good way to start the day.

Arnside Ride - Thursday 4th September 2014

From Natland I head out on the Arnside loop. A glorious evening and good ride out.

Training - Wednesday 3rd September 2014

On Helm, 5 long reps to the trig and then 3 short but hard loops of the summit. A good evening, I train hard and train well but shouldn't I be taking it easy.....the Big, Bad Ben is looming !!!

Tuesday 2 September 2014

Pilates - Tuesday 2nd September 2014

Pilates at Staveley tonight - a good class.

Training - Monday 1st September 2014

So I drag myself along to KK for a track training session - it's not going to be pleasant. But I survive the 16 reps and perhaps this is what I need to improve my speed ?!

IHR Leg 1 Recce and Staveley Ride - Sunday 31st August 2014

Another day and another recce. Today we head over to Hartsop to recce leg 1 of the Ian Hodgson Relay (IHR). A much brighter and warmer day than yesterday, so shorts and short sleeve tee required.

We park at Hartsop and have a steady run along the valley to Side Farm and then onto the Leg. We take the higher path to Boredale Hause and from there check minor alternatives to Angle Tarn. Then a few more minor route choices lead us on to the steep descent of Calf gare Gill to the Filter House on the track. Then easy running back to the car at Hartsop.

Just a short run out but a useful reminder of the route. Will try this again before the big day.

Then, later, I head out on bike; the usual Staveley loop from home. Not a bad weekend, 2 rides and 2 runs.

FRA Relay Recce, Legs 1 & 4 - Saturday 30th August 2014

The FRA Relay maps have just been added to website so KA and I use this as an opportunity to head over to Middleton to recce legs 1 & 4. You really do need to be careful how you access these routes, look carefully, there is very limited access to the open fells in this area.

We have a steady run round Leg 1, relatively straight forward. But we are by no means quick. We look closely at various route options and study the terrain around checkpoint 5. From there we head back up the fell to recce Leg 4, almost a direct reverse of Leg 1 except this one takes you to the summit of Calf at 609m; much quicker this time but probably due to our knowing the way and being warmed up.

The hills are a bit bigger than expected and nav could be tricky. Fortunately the early rain and mist had cleared when we set off, sensible choice to call in to Kirkby for coffee and toast on the way.

Barbon Arms served a good pint after the run, but slightly strange drinkers in there......what was that women doing lying on the floor ?!

Friday 29 August 2014

Evening Ride - Friday 29th August 2014

It's been a busy week but short week at work, I'm glad to be home and heading out on bike. Usual loop from home, Windermere Road, Kendal Green, Burneside, Potter Tarn Fell Road, Staveley, Bowston and the Hollins Lane.

Good to get out.

Evening Run - Thursday 28th August 2014

Best laid plans and all that.....but only myself to blame. So a planned recce of IHR Leg 1 is downgraded to a Staveley run, which then gets downgraded to a Scar run and after just 15 mins this turns into a Canal / River run from Natland to Levens Bridge and back !

A frustrating evening with a lot of wasted time !

Training - Wednesday 27th August 2014

First session with Shaun for a while, he's just as tough on us ! A good session, but I don't run as well as I would like - my calfs and Achilles are so tight :-(

Pilates - Tuesday 26th August 2014

Back to Staveley this week, a hard class.

Tuesday 26 August 2014

Grisedale Horseshoe - Monday 25th August 2014

The boys are back in town.....out with Russ and Craig.  We decide on the Grisedale Horseshoe Race Route, Craig has a map (that's worrying !) but none of us know the exact route (that's also worrying). The forecast was for some rain, a little wind and cool; I decide of 3/4's and a Helly, plus pack but the boys decide on shorts and bumbags !

There are lots of comments about this being a tough race....Craig, it will be !  We head off from Glenridding, through the campsite and a steady climb towards Birkhouse Moor and the Hole 'n Wall. Then drop to Red Tarn and a steep climb to the summit of Catstye Cam (CP 1). Then a traverse of Swirral Edge, shorter than expected and we are soon at CP 2, the summit of Helvellyn. Despite it being a Bank Holiday we have the summit to ourselves.

Then on past Nethermost Pike and Dollywagon and drop to CP 3, the East end of Grisedale Tarn.  A long steady climb from here to CP 4 on St Sunday Crag, I aim to run the ridge and manage this. We descend via the IHR route and then find the gully and the zig-zag path (which Russ and I used on this years SLMM) to CP 5 at the barn. Now we start to make it up and we get it wrong, big style ! We head through the river, this is right, but then straight up, very steeply  through head height bracken, this really is not fun. Eventually we hit the main path and follow this to the stile just before Hole 'n Wall, where we think CP 6 must be !

We then retrace our outward route, all the way back to the start / finish. Take and cakes at the car are welcome. A longer day out than expected and, CP 6, well that was in a very different place to where we thought.....some 200m lower and probably well clear of the bracken !! We live and learn !!

Sunday 24 August 2014

Ride - Sunday 24th August 2014

A cool but very bright start. I head out from home, wearing leg warmers, arm warmers and a hat !, up to Brigsteer Road, Prizet, Natland (punctures !), Sedgwick, Levens, Brigsteer, UnderBarrow, Crook, Staveley (breakfast at More), Burneside, Hollins Lane and home.

A good 27 miler.....now chores to be done.

Arnison Crag Horseshoe - Saturday 23rd August 2014

Torn between Weasdale Horseshoe Fell Race or to Patterdale Dog Day for the Arnison Crag Horseshoe. The latter wins, another short race, just 5km and 300m.

It's a relatively small, low-key fell race but it gets a good intro from the show announcer. Ran this two years ago when it was a Club Champs race, didn't look up my time (deliberately) so will be interesting to see just how much slower I am.

It's a cracking route, out of the show field up a grassy bank, onto a track, then a long pull up a boggy valley, join the undulating ridge and then to the summit of Arnison Crag.  I run hard and I run well, but my descending lets me down and I lose a place or two, but finish 9th, happy with that.

KA has a great run, but missing out on being 1st lady, she is overtaken just before the line and beaten by 1 second; but she still picks up, eventually (!) prizes for category wins (!).

And my time, well it was slower but they both started with 27mins so perhaps things are as bad as I thought !!

Loughrigg Run - Friday 22nd August 2014

Had intended to go out at lunch but decided against this, that's works out well as, at short notice, I head over to Ambleside for a run over Loughrigg.

A glorious evening, great views and a joy to be out. Follow race route to the summit but, on the way back, detour to Lilly Tarn and follow the Loughrigg / Silver Howe race route back to the park.

Pilates - Thursday 21st August 2014

Missed Tuesday, so a catch-up class at Windermere tonight; I always seem to enjoy and get more from it on a Thursday, not sure why.

Round Latrigg - Wednesday 20th August 2014

My turn to race tonight, a pleasant evening so I head to Keswick.......Round Latrigg Fell Race, a new one for me. Only short, 8.8km and just 240m of climb - that's mean a fast pace !

Amazingly, 187 racers for a mid-week race, but only two from Helm. It sets off fast, as expected, and follows the Skiddaw Race to the parking area at Latrigg, all runnable and, from there, very fast. It follows a broad grassy track, then a small lane and eventually drops to the old railway line. Familiar terrain for me, I pick the pace up, I know there is still a way to go, but I know this well and manage to pace myself accordingly, overtaking as I go.

I finish 27th in 36:54' I'm happy with that. Hot shower, this should be obligatory at all fell races, a drink and prize giving; a good evening out and a race that I would definitely do again.

Shipman Knotts Fell Race - Tuesday 19th August 2014

Tonight it's Russ's fell race; I offer to help and take on my usual role of summit marshal, that suits me.

A cool evening but high cloud and just one heavy shower blows through as I take a steady walk to the summit; wet feet though are inevitable.

A good turn out, 47 runners and Rob Jebb makes it first to the summit, by a very clear margin. I wait patiently for the 47th runner but after a search of both possible routes I guess at a retirement, my feet are getting cold too !

So I head down and meet Amanda and Imogen at the top gate, they confirm that there had been a retirement. We jog down, and make it back just as prize giving takes place and manage to grab the last of the cakes and coffee.

Well done Russ, another good race and I'm sure happy racers; a sensible prize approach too, other clubs / organisers could learn from this; one prize, one person, on that basis a lot of people win prizes, that must make them feel good, it would me.

Monday 18 August 2014

Scar Run - Monday 18th August 2014

Not sure what to do tonight, go to training, do my own thing or probably should have gone out at lunchtime.

I decide on Scar, park by the racecourse and head out in the rain. But it soon eases and I slog it out around the usual paths.  Back in just an hour, that's enough tonight.

IHR Legs 3 & 2 - Sunday 17th August 2014

Lacking motivation today, maybe I should be at Sedbergh Hills or someone else but it's another day out on my own.

So I head up to Kirkstone in the Cali, I sit there contemplating the day ahead and as I do the camper is shaking as the wind and rain lash against it ! Anyone I need to man up, so on with waterproofs, hat and glove.....yes, it is August !, and on up Red Screes.

Actually it is cool, but the weather is ok; the cloud is high and the heavy squally showers come and go, with some clear sky and occasional glimpses of sunshine.

Then down to Scandale Pass, on up to skirt around Dove Crag and down Dovedale to Brotherswater; the rock is treacherous and I don't get the perfect line but there's no rush today. Then around the back of the Tarn and on up to Hartsop....was here exactly a week ago.

I manage to run all of the track to Hayeswater, but then a slow grind up to the Knott and pick the pace up again to the summit of High Street. It is cold and wet up here so keep going towards Thornwaite and a steep descent to Thresthwaite Mouth.  Short, steep climb to Caudale Moor then a blast down Raven's Edge and the waiting Cali.

Kettle on, dry clothes and a chance to chill. About 14 miles and 4,600' of ascent.

Ride - Saturday 16th August 2014

Out early on bike, weather does not look great and it's cool.....autumn has arrived early ! From home, across to Brigsteer Road, Brigsteer, Levens, Lyth Valley, Brigsteer (again), Underbarrow, Crook and to Staveley....time for brunch.

Spoilt for choice at More, do I go for a bacon and egg roll or one of their new pastries.....ok, so I go for both but it is brunch !

Then out back of Staveley to Burnside, Hollins Lane and down Windermere Road to home. About 23 miles and I do stay dry.

Friday 15 August 2014

Ride - Friday 15th August 2015

So home after a 5pm client meeting on a Friday (!!), I head out on bike for a quick 14 miler. Usual route from home, down through Kendal Green, Burneside and then to Staveley via the Potter Fell road.

Back through Bowston and Burneside and then the delights of Hollins Lane and Windermere Road to finish, back in exactly 1hour.

Potter Tarn & Potter Fell - Thursday 14th August 2014

Out with Russ tonight for a steady run in the rain. Out along river and then to Potter Tarn, not warm enough for a swim tonight ! Then on up towards Gurnal Dubs but cut off left on a trod and eventually to Potter Fell.

The rain is relatively light and intermittent and the views are spectacular; to the Howgills, the light is stunning and the heather, coming in to bloom, is very vivid.

We then head down the track, across the fields and back into the village. Out for about an hour and twenty, well worth it.

Training - Wednesday 13th August 2014

On Helm, most Elite runners take it easy and head off with Billy; those wanting a tougher session are referred to Russell.

We work on pairs, a bit of a tag session, short fast sprints....these are not for me but perhaps do me good. Thanks Russ !

Btw, had the Quattro exactly 2 years today !

Pilates -Tuesday 12th August 2014

So I've stuck at it, still there, me and the girls ! I'm told that I am much more flexible and actually feel it too so, onwards and upwards.

Training - Monday 11th August 2014

I head to training hut having raced Saturday and been out on the fells again yesterday, I settle for running around steady laps and not much else.

IHR Leg 2 - Sunday 10th August 2014

Forecast not great for today, we're due to get the tail end of hurricane Bertha from the States; but actually this never really materialises. It not a great day, a bit wet, a bit misty and a bit windy, but really not that bad.

I head over to Kirkstone with KA, in the Cali again, and we decide to start from there and run down the valley to Brotherswater and Hartsop, where leg 2 starts; a much more gentle way to start than Hartsop to Hayeswater. But we still have that to run, or walk, and slog it out into the mist to High Street.

It's actually quite a fast and short leg, we are soon picking up speed towards Thornthwaite and then the steep descent to Thresthwaite. Another short, rocky climb from here and I try to explain...justify.....excuse my and Rick's nav error from a few years ago; it falls upon deaf ears, I wish I hadn't bothered !

Then fast running, down Raven's Edge and the last steep descent to Kirkstone. A quick change, cuppa and the to the Hawkshead Brewery for a pint. A good afternoon out.

Turner Landscape Fell Race - Saturday 9th August 2014

Raced this one last year, a real classic route and looking forward to it today. Head over to the Duddon with Russ in the Cali, the weather is reasonable, a little mist but forecast to improve.

Once registered we meet up with a view other Helm runners, Chris, Brian, Karl, Lee, Jonny and Jayne, and discuss the race and route choice. We soon under way and after the usual mad dash at the start, the slow grind up to Seathwaite Tarn begins. I dig in, keep running and soon am climbing Grey Friar; a am rubbing shoulders with Brain, just as I did last year !

There is a little mist on the top, but I know my way and now hard to Swirl How and see Joss our marshalling on the route.....now there's an inspiration. Then to Coniston Old Man, I feel like I am running ok an deliberately did not look at my time from last year, really don't need the pressure.

Very windy across Brim Fell and the a horrible descent to Goats Hawse and the short climb to Dow Crag; fast running from here then and a good line below Brown Pike, across the Walna Scar and out to White Pike on an obvious grassy trod. Flagged from here, a steep grassy descent to the wall/gate, then along the wall past the quarries and then a drop down through grassy and bouldary terrain to the finish field.

I finish in 1:49, 20th, and am pleased with that; felt good and enjoyed the race.  Other Helm runners come in, all run well and looked pleased. Then it's time for tea and cakes, the sun is out, as are the deck chairs from the tailgate of the Cali.

Saturday 9 August 2014

London - Thursday 7th & Friday 8th August 2014

Best laid plans to run one or both days in Hyde Park never materialise, perhaps the rest will be sensible before Saturdays race.

Go car spotting instead:

Training - Wednesday 6th August 2014

With no juniors and many seniors either racing, on holiday or resting there are not the usual crowds on the Helm.

So we combine senior groups and Russ leads the way. 8nhill reps, then 2 x 5 minute non-stop hill reps and then one rep to finish - by no means an easy session and some good runners in Russ's group.

Thanks Russ, keep-up the good work, it is appreciated.

Wednesday 6 August 2014

Ride & Pilates - Tuesday 5th August 2014

Working from home today, could, and should, have gone out at lunchtime when it was sunny but instead go out late afternoon, just as the rain arrives. Just a short ride out, the Potter Tarn road loop. All a bit quiet and uneventful really.

Then to Pilates....no it's not a tattoo, just K-tape ! It has been noticed that I am becoming more flexible, I'm feeling it too but as for increasing my core strength, I'm still not sure.

Tuesday 5 August 2014

Training - Monday 4th August 2014

So if ever I needed a wake-up call, this was it ! Not been to a track training session on Monday since about mid-January, and my come-back was not great !

I really have lost my speed, endurance and motivation - it's not good and there is a lot of work to do....the challenge is on !

Sunday 3 August 2014

Langdale Run - Sunday 3rd August 2014

Original plan had been to recce the Langdale Horseshoe route but the forecast and reality of the wet and windy weather materialising dictated a change. So, with KA, headed to Elterwater (they are now charging 20 pennies to spend a penny.....or if you follow someone else in there is no charge !) and  we run up and over Lingmoor. However, we get distracted on the way by Himalayan Bolson weed, a highly invasive annual weed......don't ask !! Then down to Blea Tarn and the route of the UTLD 50 & 100 (which was only last weekend) as far as Tilberthwaite.

Then head down the road to pick up the Cumbria Way, to Tarn Hows and on down to Skelwith. From there an easy run back to Elterwater but yet more Bolson !!

Couldn't resist Chester's for a late lunch on the way home ! And yes it was wet, perhaps not as bad as the Met Office's severe weather warnings might have suggested but the Inov-8 Stormshell 150 seem to cope well.

An early ride - Saturday 2nd August 2014

It's not a great forecast for the weekend but I take advantage of the dry start. Head out from home, an early detour (around the cows) results in wet feet but better than being chased ! Then towards the Scar and down the big hill into Brigsteer. Across to Underbarrow, Crook and down to Staveley, a quick latte and pastry at More and then the back road out of the village to Burneside, up Hollins Lane and home, down Windermere Road. Turns wet just as I get back, 17.5 miles, then a quick shower and over to take the wee fella out.

Potter Tarn - Friday 1st August 2014

I head out after work to Staveley.  No set plan, out on my own, I run along the river and then up to Potter Tarn; then on up towards Gurnall Dubs but at the wall cut off left and across to Potter Fell. It is a warm, muggy evening with reasonable views, I think. Then head back down, only a short run but have been steadily building up the mileage, and that's enough for tonight.

Monday 10th March to 31st July 2014

A lot to catch-up on; not really felt like keeping my blog up-to-date for the last few months but will get round to updating it and, going forward, keeping it up-to-date.

Sunday 9 March 2014

Day ride to Soria - Sunday 9th March 2014

So after meeting up with the group and collecting hire bikes, we head out from Maspalomas along the coast for 12k. The weather is warm and a little overcast but soon the sky clears and we have glorious sunshine, plus 24c too.

We then turn inland, some easy riding to start with on very smooth roads. A quick snack stop and then the real work begins, a 9km climb.  The gradient is steep but consistent and there are numerous switchbacks, I find the right gear and it feels good. It's worth it, the mountain village of Soria has a wonderful restaurant, Casa Fernando, where we stop for lunch.

Then it's back the way we came, a full on descent but rather any long enough straights to clock a good speed, I settle for 62kph. Then back along the coast to Maspalomas. 69km in total and about 1120m of climb.

The "tour" starts tomorrow so best I get an early night.

Heading to warmer climes - Saturday 8th March 2014

So an early start and heading to Gran Canaria for a cycle holiday - actually "Tour de Gran Canaria" as the trip is called.

Friday 7 March 2014

Fairfield Horseshoe - Friday 7th March 2014

Take the afternoon off work and head over to Ambleside for a run around the Horseshoe. After the heavy overnight rain, I am amazed at how the sky has cleared.  Cool and breezy but fantastic views and dry, in places, underfoot.

Decide to also take in Red Screes to add a little more distance and climb. A great run out and then beer and tapas at the Hawkshead Brewery.

Rest day - Thursday 6th March 2014

Had hoped to get out for a quick run at lunch but work gets in the way so it becomes a rest day.

Training - Wednesday 5th March 2014

Billy away so Shaun is leading the session tonight. Up to golf course and then a quick rep in one area. followed by a warm-up rep and the five reps in a different area, these ones are much longer. Then back to the first area for another rep and a half......come back soon Billy !

Pilates - Tuesday 4th March 2014

Another good session, hopefully will start to see the benefit of this in my running.

Scar Run - Monday 3rd March 2014

Head out at lunchtime and park at Helsington church. Then a run on the Scar, glorious weather and good to be out. About 6 miles.

Sunday 2 March 2014

Staveley Ride - Sunday 2nd March 2014

A dull day, but at least dry at the start. I head out from home, same route as last week.  Across Queens Road to Brigsteer Road and the. Down to the village. However this week my brakes are worse, nothing on the front and about 20% on the back; I wuss out and walk the last bit of steep downhill into Brigsteer, need to get this sorted.

Then to Underbarrow, Crook and Staveley, it turns a bit wet but, this week I am not chilled so decide to stop at Wilf's for a full cooked breakfast.  The head home with a very full stomach.

LDWA Lakeland Derwent Water Amble - Saturday 1st March 2014

It might only be an amble, but it is a long one....officially 22 miles but we measure closer to 24 ! On the drive to Braithwaite we enter a snow shower or two, wonder how the day will turnout.

As usual with these events, the registration and start is all very relaxed. Runners are due to set off at 9:30 but as it's not timed and no results most people go when ready. Having marked my map by reading through the route description, I realise it is intricate and we could easily go the wrong way; so care required.

Wise words, but in the first two miles we make a minor mistake, it's never going to be critical and just means a few hundred yards extra...as good training ! So once through Swinside we climb Catbells the weather is clear and the views of the snow covered Lakeland fells is stunning. A torturous wet rocky step descent takes us down towards Derwent water and then a long traverse above Grange and eventually past Castle Crag.  Again we need to pay attention to the route, it's incredibly difficult to read the description whilst on the move, it's rocky in most places and where's it not, it's muddy and slippery....this is  clearly why Kath was happy for me to be navigator !  :-)

We then drop down towards Seatoller and North to the first checkpoint at Rosthwaite. We bump I to Nicola, she is walking the route and set off earlier, she is going well. Once we are fed and watered we head off towards Stonethwaite and then a long, gradual climb to Dock Tarn; the scenery is fantastic but the Ricky and muddy path is hard going. We then drop to Watendlath and here the weather closes in and we decide waterproof jackets are necessary.

Then on a permissive path, parallel to Watendlath Beck, through Ashness Wood and then down the road to the second checkpoint at Surprise View. We pass on the Scotch Eggs but tuck into the Mars Bars, flapjack, bananas and squash. Then down the road to Ashness Bridge and a steady climb to Walla Crag, perhaps a new Wainwright for Kath to tick off. The weather improves and we then descend to Keswick, via and up and down of Castle Head.

Through the town and then a reverse of the BG finish to the suspension bridge at Portinscale. Not far now, but the intricate route finding continues before we are back on familiar ground, retracing the outward route back to the finish.

Out for 5 hours and both tired. The prospect of hot showers does not materialise so we settle for a sink and hot water but still good to freshen up. Then into Keswick for a late lunch. Nicola does well, she too completed the long route.

Arthur's Seat - Friday 28th February 2014

This is becoming a tradition, my fourth visit to the annual Threadneedle conference and an opportunity to stay over in my favourite city and have an early morning run to the top of Arthur's Seat; I have managed this every year so far, sometimes easier than others and this is dependant on the quantity of fizz consumed the night before !

This time I do not over do it and with a clear head I set off at 7am, across North Bridge, down the Royal Mile, past the Scottish Parliament buildings and Hollyrood Palace and then off road and up to Arthur's  Seat. It's a stunning morning, cold but fantastically clear, what a great place to be.

The path is icy and a but tricky but the views from the summit are stunning. Head back the same way,  time is against me and all done in 45 minutes. Quick shower, full Scottish breakfast and the. Train home. Only a short stay, perhaps next year I could stay a little longer.

Heading North - Thursday 27th February 2014

Heading to Edinburgh, work related but still a great place to be. No run or ride today but a special early morning run planned for tomorrow.

Training - Wednesday 26th February 2014

Why is it that some weeks it works and others it doesn't ? As you might of guessed this week is the latter. I find it hard from the start, only 5 reps on a familiar route on the golf course but it's just not happening. So frustrating but can't let it get to me; keep plugging away, don't give up and maybe it will come back !

Pilates - Tuesday 25th February 2014

Week 2 of the second set, a good session and seem to keep up with what's going on.....for once !

Potter Tarn - Monday 24th February 2014

Head out from Staveley, same route as a few weeks ago but this time the first in the light. Up through woods and then to Potter Tarn; Headtorch goes on at this point. Then down to and along river, back into the village.

Good to be out and still not missing track training !

Sunday 23 February 2014

Ride - Sunday 23rd February 2014

It's wet and it's windy, just as forecast and not expected to ease. So rather than putting off the inevitable I get kitted up and head out from home on bike.  Across Queens Road and then climb Brigsteer Road which I follow to the village.

Then to Underbarrow, Crook and Staveley; had planned to stop for coffee but cold and wet and although it would have warmed me, setting off again would not have been much fun. So I push on, through Bowston, Burneside and then up Hollins Lane.

Home, wet and cold and a lot of soggy kit to sort. But once showered head back to Staveley, in the car this time, for a 'Big meaty breakfast' in Wilf's, it was worth the wait !

High Cup Nick Fell Race - Saturday 22nd February 2014

A club championship counter and, as organiser, my selection. Have run this once before, in 2010, when it was last in the club champs. Can only remember the main run up to the Nick and back along the top (Pennine Way), the out and the back had been wiped from the memory, must be an age thing.

Once again a good club turnout, maybe the champs will be a bit more competitive this year. A big field too on this blustery but relatively dry day (although there was a hail storm on the way to Dufton). I had talked this race up, as being fantastic scenery so I was pleased that the Nick was not shrouded in mist, I hoped fellow racers looked and the views and agree with me on this.

There is more road and track at the start than I remember, it's hard going but as soon as we on to the fell it gets worse: mud, mud and more mud. It's hard going, at least for me, and both Sharon and Shaun pass me as if I'm standing still. I dig deep, why does everyone else seem to float over the mud and I sink deep into it ?

The views are impressive and the final climb to the Nick is more of a scramble. Once up, we get the full blast of the wind which had been behind us on the climb. It's now 4 miles to the finish (5 to the Nick), mostly on the Pennine Way. I gain on Shaun and make sure that I build a reserve of energy before passing him; I want to stay in front this time and not just struggle past.

I really do give it everything, I never look back but know he is breathing down my neck. The track is rough, the field muddy and the last track slightly uphill. But the end is in sight, I don't ease off and finish just 10 seconds or so ahead.

Again some impressive Helm results. I enjoy the race, it's hard and I need to find the speed I once had. Photos and results to follow.

River / Canal Run - Friday 21st February 2014

Head out at lunchtime for usual river / canal circuit. Stay dry, but the mud !!!!

Rest Day - Thursday 20th February 2014

Out to Wilf's to see Heather Dawes at a 'slide and supper' evening, just finished reading her book "Adventures in Mind".

Orienteering - Wednesday 19th February 2014

So training this week is an orienteering event on the Castle, kindly and well organised by Ben. At last a dry Wednesday evening but the mud just keeps getting worse. I am paired with Imogen, Craig and Amanda's 13 year old daughter, a very good runner for her age.

After registering, reading the rules and listening to the briefing we are off and I decide on a full-on climb to the castle to get us warmed up ! The first few controls are easy to find but number 11, the holly bush, proves illusive so we decide to push on and not waste any more time. All goes well. We are up and down the castle, down to the ski slope, onto Gooseholme, the scout hut, then the canal path beyond Parr Street.

We are running well and I use map reading as an opportunity to catch my breathe, these youngsters are just too energetic. Back on to the castle and we have time to go back to the holly bush, we eventually find the control and head out towards the Castle stores for the last control.

We are back in 49:30'ish and prove to be the 1st Junior / Senior Team - well run Imogen.  She is chuffed as she beat both her Mum and her Dad - sorry guys ! Hopefully she'll share some of her chocolate prize with you.

Then to the Castle Inn for a quick pint and home to sort the very muddy kit.
