Wednesday 27 February 2013

London - 27th February 2013

First train down and last back, a long day and no chance if a run.

Lyth Valley Ride - Tuesday 26th February 2013

Make it home from work a few minutes early so enough daylight for usual route in bike around the Lyth Valley.

A fabulous evening but cold on the tootsies.

Training - Monday 25th February 2013

Head to training. It is cold and dry again, could get use to this. Work hard.

Ride and Ride - Sunday 24th February 2013

Up and out early, a cold day; I wrap up warm and head on the usual Arnside route. A good ride.

Late afternoon I head out for a run, from home to river, Sizergh, Scar and back along river. Longer than expected, out for almost 2 hours and only just back before dark. Great views from Scar.

Helvellyn and The Dodds Race Route - Saturday 23rd February 2013

Russ, Craig and I head to Threlkeld for a recce / training run on this route. It looks a reasonable day but we know that on the tops it could be very different.

A steep climb on to Clough Head and then to the Dodds. We soon hit frozen ground and icy patches but hold off putting spikes on. We are in and out f the cloud and are moving well. The higher we get the more snow we encounter and just before Helvellyn we all put spikes on. The summit is a grim and dangerous place to be today.

It's good to turn back but it is not downhill all the way, the climbs are tough just as they were in the race last year. Out for just over 4 hours, good to get the distance and climbing in.

Arthur's Seat, Edinburgh - Friday 22nd February 2013

Despite too much Champagne last night, it still manage to be up and out before breakfast for a run up Arthur's Seat. Life is good, on occasions, and this is one of those times.

A great little City Run, down the Royal Mile, past the Scottish Parliament building and Palace and then off road and uphill.

It s a cold and clear morning, great views from the summit. Back a different way, across Hunter's Bog and back up the Royal Mile.

The door man at the hotel as a towel and bottle of water ready for me, I could get use to 5 star luxury.

Work...Edinburgh - Thursday 21st February 2013

Heading North for work, no time for a run today.

Training - Wednesday 20th February 2013

The mission continues; to the Castle tonight, 8 reps, short and steep. I work hard again and it goes to plan, long may this last !

Lyth Valley Ride - Tuesday 19th February 2013

Get home early and take advantage of the great weather and day light. Head out on usual Lyth Valley ride; a good evening to be out.

Training - Monday 18th February 2013

On a mission tonight, something to prove to myself, but not to others. I dry, cold night, it goes to plan, I can run and can run hard - mission accomplished !

Barbon Ride - Sunday 17th February 2013

A glorious day and I'm not going to let Carnethy get me down. I head out on bike, through Old Hutton and then back roads to Rigmaden and Barbon.

Cut back over to Kirkby Lonsdale and a stop for coffee at Kitridding Farm shop, a good place for a stop. Then back through Od Hutton, across Helm and down to Natland. Need to replace the battery in my bike computrt, no idea how far I've been.

Carnethy 5 - Saturday 16th February 2013

So 6 from Helm head North for the infamous Carnethy 5 Hill Race. This race attracts a huge following and, for a big field, has a great atmosphere.

In 2012 I finish in 1hr 00mins 32secs, so could a sub 1hr be on the cards today ? I feel ok, not at my fittest but not in bad shape either. I eat sensibly and warm-up properly. However, as soon as the race starts the legs just don't want to work, absolutely no energy !

Billy soon passes me on the first climb and later comments that I knew I was struggling. I couldn't react to him passing me, not that this is a bad thing, and struggle all the way a through the race. It is a battle and not won that I win or enjoy.

I get round but that's about it, over 4 mins slower but it actually felt much worse. We head back on the first bus, shower and then a meal in the school canteen. A good day but a race to forget. I will move on from this and not dwell it.

    Friday 15 February 2013

    River / Canal Run - Thursday 14th February 2013

Head out at lunch for usual run. The snow has all gone, the mud is back. Good to be out though and quite a bright day.

    Training - Wednesday 13th February 2013

A grim night - it has snowed most of the day but then turned mild and very wet.

Torrential rain and deep slush ! We head to the Castle, just 6 reps. We take it easy because of the race on Saturday but also because the it is a horrid night.

    Rest day - Tuesday 12th February 2013

Racing on Saturday, decide to be sensible.

    Training - Monday 11th February 2013

A cold night and the ground has dried out to a large extent. At last no mud :-)

17 reps tonight, thanks Shaun !

    Arnside Ride - Sunday 10th February 2013

A miserable morning: wet, cold, misty and breezy....great.

Head out on bike to Arnside, usual route. The lanes are very wet and muddy...my bike is a mess and so am I.

I don't even bother stopping in Arnside, head straight home. I thought on the way out I was riding into the wind, i was proved wrong when I turned for home !

Still the exercise does me good.

    Langdales - Saturday 9th February 2013

Russ is keen to recce more of the JNC (Joss Naylor Challenge) which he is attempting in July. There is a lot of snow on the fells and the forecast is not great, but it will take more than that to stop us.

We head out from the NDG carpark:

The weather is actually much better than expected, misty but no wind and relatively dry. we head up to Stickle Tarn, via the zig-zag path to the right of the ghyll. Soon at the tarn we are at first deceived, the tarn looks frozen but actually is has a layer of sleet floating on the surface and it not frozen at all - weird. Round to the right and then up on to the ridge to Blea Rigg and towards Sergeant Man.

We miss the summit, deliberately, and then descend towards Calf Crag. The aim is to try a new route to High Raise which Russ might then use on his JNC. The going is tough, deep soft snow and poor visibility; we soon make the summit and then head from there to the top of Stake Pass and round to Rossett Pike; this does not go completely to plan but we live and learn.

We then follow the usual path down to Mickleden and back along the Langdale valley. A good run out, about 4 hours of energetic exercise. Washed down with coffee and cherry bakewells and then a pint of Winter Warmer at the Hawkshead Brewery when back in Staveley.

    Sunday 10 February 2013

    Two runs today (!) - Friday 8th February 2013

Wasn't planned that way. A glorious day so head out for my Scout Scar route at lunch, it's great to be out...photos to follow. Stunning views, plenty of snow on the fells, shame it's not a great forecast for the weekend though !

Get an invitation to have a run along canal / river in the evening; another cold night but mud not as deep as it was.
So this proved to be my 6th run in 5 days.....perhaps over doing it ?!

    A short evening run - Thursday 7th February 2013

Was going to be a rest day but decide to head out for a short river / canal run after work; wish I hadn't bothered !

    Training - Wednesday 6th February 2013

On golf course again; a cold clear night and no mud :-) 5 long reps, uphill but on a track, I work hard but can't keep with Craig !

    River / Canal Run - Tuesday 5th February 2013

A cold, snowy day. Head out at lunchtime for usual route; sometimes the harsh weather adds to the fun.

    Training - Monday 4th February 2013

Another cold, wet night, oh and, also, muddy ! Usual 16 reps, or was it 17 ? Hard work but I guess only as hard as I make it.

    Arnside Ride - Sunday 3rd February 2013

Usual route to Arnside, there too early for coffee so head straight back. Bike is a mess, needs cleaning and servicing !

    Fairfield - Saturday 2nd February 2013

Head out early for a run around the Fairfield Horseshoe; probably my favourite route.

Relatively uneventful, a few snowy / icy patches to negotiate but otherwise straight forward; always an enjoyable run for me.

    River / Canal Run - Friday 1st February 2013

Same route as yesterday, just a bit muddier today ! I've now had enough of mud !

    River / Canal Run - Thursday 31st January 2013

Head out a lunchtime, usual route along river and back along the canal. Another muddy run !

    Training - Wednesday 30th January 2013

Up to Golf course again, Shaun taking the session tonight.

Never quite what is coming next or how many reps, makes it difficult to pace and be consistent.

But anyway, work hard and it's then a long run back to the school.

    Rest day - Tuesday 29th January 2013

    A day of rest.
