Training - Wednesday 29th August 2012

Run up to Helm, a hard session, concentrating on downhill running but not without some up ! Just 6 reps, sounds easy.....but it's not !

Just as we finish in blows a heavy deluge, manage to scrounge a lift home - very thankful.

Arnside again - Tuesday 28th August 2012

But this time for fish & chips :-) A good ride out and pleasant eveing, usual route. Get bombarded by insects on the way home, should have worn glasses....lesson learnt !

Ride & Training - Monday 27th August 2012

Early ride to Arnside - quick stop for coffee and bacon roll and then out into the rain for the ride home. At least the bad weather is on my back; a good 21 miles ride.

Later in the day I decide to head down to training, not sure if it will be on as it's a Bank Holiday....sad people, yes it is.

It's really wet and muddy but the rain holds off - a hard session and get home pitted in mud !

Fairfield Horseshoe - Sunday 26th August 2012

Late in the day I decide a quick run around the Horseshoe - it good to avoid the crowds and I enjoy the solitude of running on my own - glad I gave Grasmere Guides race a miss, to crowded and brutal for me.

Arnison Crag Horseshoe - Saturday 25th August 2012

Need to race this in order to stand a chance of completing 8 races in the Club Champs.

Weather not great, wet and very muddy - the descent will be treacherous ! A good Helm turn-out and a cracking race this proves to be.

A quick pre-race recce of the start is useful, especially as I again lead the race at the start ! A good long climb up teh valley, I am running well and enjoy the run along the ridge to the summit. Then the fun starts, I think my downhill running is improving but still get left behind. I finish in 8th place and, more importantly, 1st Helm so maximum Champ points.

RACE REPORT

The Arnison Crag Horseshoe is held as part of Patterdale Dog Day and takes place in between the sheep dog trials and the hound trailing.  Fortunately, dogs and runners know their place!  It is a beautiful setting amongst wonderful scenery.

Thank you to all the runners who took part in the race.  We hope that you enjoyed your run.  The route is only 3 miles but it punches above its weight/distance .  It manages to combine grassy uphill running and muddy squelchy uphill running, with a bit of flatish track and a lovely undulating run from Trough Head to Arnison Crag.  The descent from Arnison Crag is steep, grassy, slippy and stoney in places – fabulous if you love downhill running.

This year we were blessed with rain!  Which became quite torrential just as the runners finished.  Some of the numbers disintegrated but most runners were smiling and covered in mud.  41 runners set off ... and they all came back. Plus an extra one who hadn’t registered.  That caused some confusion!  And despite the wet and muddy conditions, we did have some records.

First runner back was Gavin Bland from Borrowdale in a time of 25.26.  Just outside the course record but a new male over 40 record.  The first four runners were all over 40 as Gavin was followed home by Martin Cliffe from Eryri Harriers in 25.59, Darren Block in 26.04 and Nick Sharp in 26.12.  First male over 50 was Richard Unwin from Keswick AC in 30.00.  Roger Whitaker from Cumberland Fell Runners was first over 60 in 38.50.

The ladies also did well.  Kath Aubrey from Helm Hill Runners was first lady home in 31.28. She was also first lady over 40 in a new record time.  First lady over 50 was Lyn Thompson from Keswick AC in 33.57.

There was a sprint for the finish to claim the title of first junior.  Local lad, Kieran Dawes from Glenridding, finished just in front of Jonathan Stewart of Manchester Harriers in a time of 29.44.  He set a new local’s record and a new junior record!

Finally a BIG thank you to Catstycam Outdoor Shop in Glenridding for sponsoring the prizes, to Vanessa Schaepers and Marion Parsons for helping with registration and the finish line, to Kate Jackson and Bradley Martin for opening gates and pitching in, to Phil Brown for being our man at the top and making sure that everyone gets to the top of Arnison Crag and to Arnison Crag for being such a fantastic fell.

Hope to see you all next year!

Christine Kenyon

Lyth Valley Ride - Friday 24th August 2012

A quick blast after work around usual route; expect to get wet but stay dry.

Red Screes - Thursday 23rd August 2012

A real late decision - I head over to Red Screes and put in a Ben Nevis training session. Hard up the path and then back down the scree x 1 1/2. A good mini session and can't believe how quickly the light fades.

Then down to Ambleside for a fish & chip supper, this makes it all worthwhile :-)

Training - Wednesday 22nd August 2012

On Helm, but actually this week very little on the Helm ! Billy takes us on a fartlek tour of the Procter land...a good session but plenty of mud, thistles, nettles and lively cows !

Shipman Knotts Fell Race - Tuesday 21st August 2012

Russ's race - and a good one at that. I have, in the past, helped and not run but this year, slightly selfishly, decided to run.

It's a little cracker, fast and runnable and lots of mud. I lead the race, for a short distance, but continue to run well and am pleased with my overall position..7th, I think. Not the best of lines on the way down, despite having flagged and recce'd the route many times before, but I'm not the only one.

Results and photos to follow.

A great location for prize giving and top cakes...thanks for organising this Russ, keep up the good work.

Wednesday 22 August 2012

Training - Monday 20th August 2012

Shaun is back....happy days ! A hard session, as usual, but rewarding.

Blisco & Crinkle Crags - Sunday 19th August 2012

A warm and bright morning, head down to the ODG in Langdale.

Usual route up Blisco and a short detour to unsuccessfully recce the Great Lakes descent route. Then down to Red Tarn and across Crinkle Crags to Three Tarns. The cloud is building and a few spots of rain so head down the Band. A good move as it turns wet when back at the ODG.

In to Ambleside for some late lunch and a browse.

Staveley Breakfast Ride - Saturday 18th August 2012

Head out early through town, Burneside, Bowston and to Staveley for a bacon roll at More.

A more pleasant route back, Crook, Underbarrow, Brigsteer and then Brigsteer Hill (!), down to Prizet and back to Natland.

A good ride out and back before it turns wet.

Lyth Valley Ride - Friday 17th August 2012

Usual route after work.....starting to get repetitive again !

Friday 17 August 2012

River/Canal run & Lyth Valley ride - Thursday 16th August 2012

Manage to head out for lunchtime run along river to Hawes Bridge and back along canal path.

Another night, another ride. Usual route and a pleasant evening although a few spots of rain but not like the torrential downpours earlier.

Helm training - Wednesday 15th August 2012

After the earlier downpours it stays dry, but humid. Race walk session, with fast downhills x 6 - tough but rewarding; even manage to run there and back tonight; it's coming together again, slowly.

Arnside (but no fish & chips !) - Tuesday 14th August 2012

Out on usual route, again another warm evening - very pleasant.

Training - Monday 13th August 2012

Not been here for a while and, to be honest, have not missed it !

A series of short, fast reps - it's a warm night and hard work. The ride home is a good way to warm down.

Lyth Valley Ride - Sunday 12th August 2012

Time is tight today, but make it out for a quick blast around the usual Lyth valley circuit - manage to average over 15mph !

Fairfield Horseshoe - Saturday 11th August 2012

Forecast to be very hot, I head over to Ambleside and decide on a run around the Horseshoe....it's been almost a week since I last did this !

Not as hot as forecast and actually quite cool on top, this suits me. I run well but take it steady; good to be out running again.

Fish & Chips ! - Friday 10th August 2012

So for the first time this week I feel like exercising. It is a glorious evening so I head out on bike to Arnside; the village has, by far, the best fish & chip shop in the world.

Sit on the sea front enjoying my tea, very pleasant and then a steady ride back. 21 mile sin total and feel ok.

Friday 10 August 2012

Not good - Monday - Thursday 6th - 9th August 2012

It all goes wrong, wake up feeling rubbish - some virus or bug. Wiped out for four days, all that fitness and strength drains away - not a happy chap ! :-(

Fairfield Horseshoe - Sunday 5th August 2012

I manage to dodge the heavy downpours and thunder storms and have a good run around the Horseshoe. mid / late afternoon is a good time to be out, very few others are !

A good run, legs feel good and body recovered from the Ultra last weekend.

Ride / Run - Saturday 4th August 2012

Head out early on bike for breakfast - through town, Burneside, Bowston to Staveley and latte and danish at More Bakery :-) Route back is far more scenic, Crook, Underbarrow, Brigsteer, Sedgwick and to Natland.

later in the day I head over to Staveley for a short run to Potter Tarn and over Potter Fell - one of my favourite short routes.

River / canal run - Friday 3rd August 2012

Back out at lunchtime around usual route - never tire of this run.

Ride - Thursday 2nd August 2012

Head out after work around usual Lyth valley route - not much more to say !

Training - Wednesday 1st August 2012

I'm back on the Helm for training, not been here for a while. I take it easy, conscious that this time last year I trained hard (after the Ultra 100) and then didn't run again for a month !

We head to the far end and run long reps to the trig and back down - I do take it easy, for once sensible !

River / canal run - Tuesday 31st July 2012

Do my legs still work.....yes they do. Head out on usual 'lunchtime' route along river and back along canal - feel goo, maybe that day of rest was what I needed !
