Mountain Biking - Sunday 30th August 2015

Head over to Brathay and head out on mountain bike, intending for Grizedale; but a change of plan and a hasty bit of route planning (without a map) sees us heading down to Coniston, then Tilberthwaite, Little Langdale and then Elterwater; a quick stop for tea and the Red Bank, for me then a fast downhill to Skelwith and a short up and then down back to Brathay.

Home with a mucky bike, thank goodness for muc off !

Walk - Saturday 29th August 2015

So no Arnison Dash for me this year. Instead head over to Ambleside and an early morning walk, under Loughrigg, around Rydal Water, then Grasmere Water, into Grasmere and back along the Coffin Route; out for a little over 2 hours, all relatively flat and little or no stress on my Achilles.

Friday 28 August 2015

Ride - Friday 28th August 2015

Head out at lunchtime for the usual loop to Arnside. Strava tells me it's my quickest loop yet, 15.7mph.

Swimming - Thursday 27th August 2015

Have a quick walk up Helm for a chat with the wee fella and then to pool; 20 lengths again, not sure I will ever enjoy this !

Wednesday 26 August 2015

Physio - Wednesday 26th August 2015

More pain for me, but the feedback is there is a slight improvement. Need to keep up with the stretching, roller img, swimming, biking, walking and mow add to that upper body strengthening exercises.

Swimming - Tuesday 25th August 2015

A lunchtime swim, 20 lengths in a quiet pool.

Then Pilates in the evening, always enjoy this.

Mountain Biking - Monday 24th August 2015

Unexpectedly and at short notice, I head over to Brathay for a mountain bike ride around Grisedale Forest. It's a glorious evening and we take in a big loop before dropping back down to the river. It's surprisingly dark by 8:30 and cool too.

I just make it to the chip shop for last orders - a good evening.

Sunday 23 August 2015

Ride - Sunday 23rd August 2015

A short ride around the Lyth Valley route. It's breezy and humid and I just make it back before the rain and thunder roll in.

Derwent Ramble - Saturday 22nd August 2015

I head to Keswick and go for a ramble ! Well actually a brisk 8 mile walk around Derwent Water; it was ok, but I definitely would prefer to be out running, had hoped to race at Weasdale today 😢

Lunchtime ride / Evening swim - Friday 21st August 2015

I head again on bike, same loop for opposite direction. It feels longer and slower but, surprisingly, Strava tells otherwise: 15.4mph, maximum speed 32.9mph.

Then early evening I go swimming; I don't really do swimming and can't say I enjoyed it, but I need to keep focussed. I use a kick board, this gives me confidence but certainly makes my legs work; I guess that's a good thing.

Friday 21 August 2015

Lunchtime ride - Thursday 20th August 2015

So I take my bike to work and heard out for a loop to Arnside. 14.1 miles, 56;18 mins, 688' gain and 15.1 average mph.

Turbo - Wednesday 19th August 2015

No training for me; the weather's fowl so I set up the turbo trainer, this has got to be the most depressing way to keep fit !

I manage 20 minutes and hate it, wouldn't it have been good to be out running.

Shipman Knotts Fell Race - Tuesday 18th August 2015

Russ's race and I do my usual marshaling duties on the summit. A bit wet to start but soon clears and a pleasant evening.

Just 36 runners and not too far spread so not up there for too long. A good race, well done Russ.

Physio...bad news ! - Monday 17th August 2015

My Achilles just keeps niggling way and has down for years. I need to get this sorted and head to see a Physio who has been recommended to me.

I sort of know this is coming, he tells me to lay off running for a minimum of 3 months, maybe more, otherwise I risk it getting a whole lot worse and maybe even snapping..."it's a bit like an elastic band that has been stretched and stretched, there's no elasticity left" !!!

I listen to what he says, he knows his stuff and has been through it himself - I am left with no choice.

And just for added fun, he inflicts more pain on me than I think I've ever endured !

Slieve Donnard - Sunday 16th August 2015

So I'm the only one with a late flight home and that means I have a long day in Newcastle on my own. I decide to head out for a walk, back up Glen River to the Mourne Wall and then climb to the summit of Slieve Donnard; legs ok'ish on the way up, but not so good on the descent !

Then into Newcastle for lunch....Maude's (visit number 4) and a huge ice cream dessert. An hour so reading and snoozing in the park and then back to Belfast and the journey home.

It proved to be a good weekend.

Mourne Seven 7's - Saturday 15th August 2015

Although tempted not to run, I am left with little choice. it's a bit breezy and chilly in Donnard Park and, last minute, I change into a long sleeve Helly. It's a British FRA Champs race so a big field, and some big names. For me though it's a run not a race, I need to be sensible.

The route is up Glen River to the Ice House and then a direct climb past Black Stairs waterfall to Slieve Donnard, which at 853m is Ireland's highest mountain, and a full 853m climb from the park.

I'm taking it steady and it's so much more enjoyable ! Then a steep descent before a short, steep climb to checkpoint 2 at the monument on Slieve Commedagan. Conditions are ideal and I keep a steady pace. on to Slieve Bearnagh, Slieve Meelmore and Slieve Meelberg before a boggy descent to the dam at Ben Crom Reservoir.

It's a big climb from here and out and back to Slieve Binnian -this is tough. Then to the last checkpoint on Slievelamagan, that's even tougher. The last leg to the finish is the longest, it's a relief to finish and the take is very much empty.

I'm 82nd, in 5hrs 22mins and part of the Helm men's Open Team, we come 2nd....frustrating could I couldn't have given more for the team.

It's a long time waiting for prize giving then back to the cottage to clean up and head out for pizza and then beer, Maude's....visit number 3 !

Heading to Ireland - Friday 14th August 2015

Not a great start to this trip - just 10 minutes before I leave, I find out I am going on my own.

It's a very wet drive to Liverpool and then a short hop over to a dry Northern Ireland. Pick up the Merc and then head down to Newcastle, just an hours drive South. First stop, Maude's for lunch and then to Donnard Park for a slow walk up Glen River to the Mourne Wall and the saddle between Slieve Donnard and Slieve Commedagh. I get good views of the race route, it's going to be another tough day and definitely too much, too soon after my Ultra.

I then head to my cottage, which is great and meet with with Marie and Carrie in Maude's, visit number 2 ! it's good to have some company and we head out for dinner, pasta required and the Italian restaurant is a good find.

Not too late to bed, need all the rest I can get ahead of tomorrow.

River / canal run...twice ! - Thursday 13th August 2015

Make or break....I head out at lunch for a steady run along the canal and back along the river; I can still feel my hamstring but I can run.

Then out again in the evening; over to Natland and along the canal and river...again.

Training - Wednesday 12th August 2015

Probably should have given this a miss, but decide to go steady in Russ's group. however, only two reps in and something pulls in my hamstring, I limp around the Helm and head home early; hopefully not too serious.

Pilates - Tuesday 11th August 2015

Legs not great but hopefully will be better after Pilates....they are, a bit !

Sweden - Saturday 8th to Monday 10th August 2015

So a few days to relax at Abisko Mountain Station and a short blast around Stockholm on the way home; all over too quickly.

Tierra Arctic Ultra - Friday 7th August 2015

So the big day arrives, I've waited a long time for this. Not a great sleep, well not until 2am when I get up to satisfy natures call and then fall fast asleep until the alarms, one by one, start to go off.

Up before 3am, it's going to be a long day ! It's light, which helps, but the dam nozzles are attacking ! Stove on, kit packed away and tent down. I head down to the campers kitchen and at least have some space to sort myself out and make my porridge; I'm not the only one there but the mood is somber, well it is still the middle of the flippin night !

Anyway, I make the coach with time to spare and tuck into my porridge and coffee. We are soon at Nikkaluokta, the end of the road and the start of the race. I dump my kit bag and go to the loo, then go again and once more for luck - must be pre-race nerves ! The weather is kind, a little mist and even a little drizzle but could be worse and looks like it will soon clear.

The mood is a little happier at the start and after some faffing of my kit I'm at the start line, actually near the front ! It's a relatively small, low key race, hence the attraction, and with just a few words from the organiser we are soon off. I know the route, I walked it North to South last summer over 5 days, just need to run the other direction this year, oh, and run it all in less than 24 hours !

My Achilles hurts, but that was expected, hopefully after a few hours it will loosen and other things will start to hurt so not fretting about this. I'm near the front, but the pace is sensible and no one gets carried away like they do in races in the UK.  It's 17.5k to Kebnekaise Mountain Station, the first checkpoint but I can't make it that far without needs to go in the woods ! I lose a few places but lives a lot more comfortable after that !

The 120k route cuts off right before the first checkpoint, and I soon find myself in 4th place as I pass through the checkpoint. Checkpoints are only for safety reasons, I have to be self sufficient, so no goodies available on route. I make good progress, I feel ok and it's now 14.5k to checkpoint 2 at Singi  huts; this is the only slight difference to the route I walked last year, but is all fairly obvious. I'm eating and drinking well and continue to make steady progress. But the going is hard, very rough and this definitely takes its toll.

On through Singi and now 11k to the huts at Salka; the scenery is stunning, still some snow patches around and the sky as cleared to give us a glorious day. Salka is stunning, I spent two nights here last year and it brings back memories, some good and some not so good (I was seriously ill for two days of the trip last year and then the bug spread round the group....not pleasant !).

After Salka it's 13.5k to Tjaktja, this is over the Tjaktja pass, the highest point and biggest climb of the route. The ground is very rough on the far side and the few snow patches make for easier running. There are a lot of walkers about, the Kungsluden trail is very popular. They are very encouraging and this spurs me on. I rarely see runners in front or behind, some never quite knowing if I'm catching or being caught.

So I'm a little over half way and starting to feel tired. My only race strategy was to keep moving, at least walking if I can't manage to run, there are only two exceptions, to fill water bottle and to pee; I just about stick to this and will use this strategy in future races. Alesjaure is the next hut and checkpoint, I definitely walk some of this. Frustrating as its relatively flat, but very tough ground. There's a big crowd at the hut and I manage to run up the steep incline to it - I try to impress when I need to.

This was my low point last year, I felt s@&t and actually not much better today. It's a tough section to Keron, 17.5k, half of it on a boggy path beside a lake. Although the scenery is stunning, I went hours without it changing very little is so vast, this can be tough mentally and it was !

But I just had to get on with it, food was not going down well but I made myself drink and this helped. I was desperate for more savory food, but my cheese and ham wrap and salted peanuts were polished off long ago, lessen to be learnt here.

But I eventually make it to Keron and its then only 16k to the finish. I break this down, just 6k and then a 10k, that's sounds easy ! But I'm out of run and feeling tired; nothing is specifically hurting and feet are in good shape but legs just don't want to go quicker than walking pace.

It's relatively flat but still the terrain is rough, i wish for some soft grass ! Eventually a sign says 10.5k to the finish - great :-) I decide to switch on my Garmin and count down, 10k on a good day is sub 40mins, ok I'm slow but maybe 10 minute k's are achievable, the end is in sight. I have no if I'm being caught and, knowing I am 6th, I decide to put everything in to running the last 10k. But I soon give up on the Garmin, a watched kettle never boils ! I force myself on, not wanting to miss out on a top 10 place, I never imagined I would be in this position so do not want to lose it now.

A few twists and turns and then I can see Abisko, the finish. A sign says 500m, well it felt like 999m but i ran hard and crossed the line to applause and encouragement. I was 6th in the men's 100k, and 7th overall.

What a great feeling to finish an Ultra "......running is a bit like church, many people attend, but not many understand !".

15hrs 42mins, much quicker than I expected although, secretly, I was thinking 16 hours would be good. I get some food and drink and very soon my legs cease - really no interest in camping so I secure a mattress in a temporary dorm, that's fine for me, especially as a very attractive Swedish girl is next to me....I think she was impressed when i told her I had been for a run, she asked how far....:) But perhaps she wasn't so impressed with the sweaty smell, so a shower needed; easier said than done; to get to the dorm I had to go down steep stairs, not great, the showers were back upstairs ! But well worth it, surprisingly although it's gone 11pm and I have been up since 3am and run 104k (it wasn't 100k !!) I don't feel tired, so head to the bar for a much needed drink...fanta and a big bag of crisps !

What a great day.

Kiruna - Thursday 6th August 2015

Another early start and another SAS flight, North to Kiruna, well inside the Arctic Circle. My race, the Tierra Arctic Ultra, is run in conjunction with the Fjallraven Classic; 2300 backpackers from 25 nations, so the registration is a hectic place but the small counter for the Ultra has no queue !

The place is buzzing, I engross myself in it and bump into Michel who led my trip on the Kungsluden Trail last year, he is guiding a group on the Classic.

Time flies, I pitch my Nordisk Telemark (it feels at home in Scandinavia !), sort my kit, dine out and then set numerous alarms; I am paranoid about missing the bus at 4am, it's the only way of getting to the start of the race !

Heading to Sweden - Wednesday 5th August 2015

Client meetings and then an early evening flight to Stockholm; a comfortable flight with SAS and then an overnight stay at the Radisson Blu; not long now to the big race !

Pilates - Tuesday 4th August 2015

A good class and I get it; Rebecca really is good at this.

Strengthening Session - Monday 3rd August 2015

Head over to Ambleside to try Paul Tierney's Outdoor Fitness Class; he's just won the UTLD 100 so must know his stuff !

He does, a good session, focussing on posture and core strength. But I use muscles that I don't usually use and think I might feel this in a day or so !

Hope to be back for more soon.

Sunday 2 August 2015

Coniston Fells - Sunday 2nd August 2015

Head over to Coniston for a run on the fells. It's claggy and muggy but the earlier rain has cleared. Up "Snakey" bank, onto Wetherlam, Swirl How, Brim Fell, Old Man of Coniston and decent via Goats Water. Then to Ambleside for tea and scones at Cafe Treff.

Arnside Ride - Saturday 1st August 2015

Ride out from Natland to Arnside. Coffee and cake at the Sardine.....has to be done. 21 miles and recorded on Strava !

Thursday 2nd April - Friday 31st July 2015

So a long time off from my Blog and a lot to catch up on.

There have been good runs and not so good runs, good races and not so good races and good times and some not so good times - I will catch up but need to start fresh.

But I can't let this period pass without mentioning a few highlights:

  • The Skye Trail (1st - 5th April) - a fantastic trip, great scenery and really good to spend the day walking with Dave Till and having with him, Niall and Jenny in the evening at the Slig (where I ate every evening of the trip - the backpacking never materialised but hitch hiking did !!).
  • Loughrigg Fell race (8th April), one of the favourite short races - did ok, and the chips after always taste great.
  • 15th April - picked up my new car - X3....great car.
  • 18th April - Anniversary Waltz fell race: really enjoyed this, as I always do - a great Spring day too.
  • 25th April - 3 Peaks: a new race for me and grim a day. Still trying to get my fitness and endurance back, ran with KA, that really helped (both of us, I think).
  • 4th May - a Reece of Duddon with KA.
  • 11th May - ran with Bryn, work friend, who is competing the UTLD50, he suffered but went on to greater runs :-)
  • 13th May - Caw Fell race, another new one for me; a glorious evening but the out and back route is not as easy as it might sound.
  • 16th May - Old County Tops; ran with old BG friend Paul Jackson; we were well matched and had a great day out.
  • 20th May - Cautley Fell race, a mini classic.
  • 21st - 23rd May - Fisherfield 5 (nee 6); a fantastic trip with Russ....oh and I compleated my Munro Round :-)
  • 24th May - Helvellyn & The Dodds Fell Race; a great race and ran well.
  • 30th May - Grisedale Horseshoe race route and then to Nic & Charlie's wedding.
  • 6th June - a wild trip to Skye with KA (the weather was the wild part) and a shortened Trotternish Fell Race, much to both of our reliefs.
  • 10th June - Dockray / Great Dodd fell race - steady but much better weather than on Skye.
  • 13th June - Howtown Fell race; a great route and ran well.
  • 15th June - out with Bryn again,a really enjoyable 24 miler from Kentmere to join the UTLD 50 where it crosses the Roman Road and then the race route back to Kentmere; he's really improved, all his hard work paying off.
  • 17th June - Gill Garth Gallop - a new race for me and not one that many people have heard of - no "Green Army" there, much to my delight.
  • 20th - LDWA Derwent Amble route and then mad dash to watch and support at Gummer's How.
  • 27th - 28th June - Lairig Ghru; one of my favourite races and, not surprisingly it's in Scotland; a good trip and race with KA.
  • 4th - 5th July - Saunder Mountain Marathon at Torver. A great weekend, ran with Craig and glorious overnight camp at Tilberthwaite. Came 9th in Kirkfell, a good result but could have done better.
  • 8th July - Reston Scar Scamper; not a great result but a good evening.
  • 9th July - a glorious evening walk up Helvellyn with the guys from work.
  • 12th July - long trail / fell run from Portinscale with KA. To Seatoller, Stockley Bridge, Seathwaite Fell, Glaramara and then all the way back to Portinscale - it wears us both out.
  • 15th July - a glorious evening run around Fairfield Horseshoe.
  • 19th July - Kentmere Horseshoe fell race; a new one for me and really enjoyed it, shame I couldn't have run a bit faster though.
  • 20th July - an evening run over Loughrigg.
  • 21st July - an evening run around Fairfield.
  • 24th July - a 12k run from Portinscale, over Catbells and back along the shores of Derwent.
  • 25th July - out to support Bryn on the 50; he did great 12hrs 30mins. :-)
  • 26th July - 25k around Kentmere and Longsleddale, cold and wet !
Hibernot !!

And a few last words to finish; sadly Barney is no longer with us; a very tough decision to make, but the right one; the wee fella was suffering and that wasn't fair. He had a fantastic life, and I believe could have wished for no better. He was spoilt by us both and by his Grandparents, we all adored him.

Not a day goes by without my thinking about him; he is laid to rest in two of his favourite places and I try to visit one of them each week; he has fantastic views and I'm sure he's content there.

He was, and always will be, my best buddy :-)
