 A glorious day, we head out from Ambleside to Loughrigg Tarn and then back over Loughrigg Fell.

 I ride out to Holme, Silverdale and Arnside; then stop for cake & coffee and a walk over Arnside Knott. Damp, cold cycle gear back on for a brisk ride home.

 I head up to Keswick to run the Expresso Round (third time). A bit blowy on tops and occasional flurries of snow and hail. I finish in a few seconds under 3 hours, I’ll settle for that.

Over to Sedbergh for a run on the Howgills. First to Crook, then to Calders, Calf and back via Arrant How and Winder. 

Walk and camp (& BROGA) - Sunday 6th & Monday 7th December 2020

The Lakes at its best, clear skies and snow on the fells. We head up the Band from Great Langdale, pitch tent close to Three Tarns and then climb Bowfell. Amazing view out to the coast and to the Sca Fells from tent; then the next morning over Crinkle Crags and Pike O’Blisco. A great wee expedition. 

Then home for a relaxing BROGA class.

Big ride - Saturday 5th September 2020

 Craig, Russ, Matt and I head out from Tebay; to Orton then an initial big climb before heading north through some of the villages of the Eden valley. Eventually to Knock and then the infamous Great Dun Fell climb, closed to traffic, good tarmac and Britain’s highest road open to cyclists - 835m high and a 40 minute or so climb. Great fun followed by a good descent, then to Dufton for lunch, Appleby and the longer a back to Orton; a top ride.

 A route I have made up and call the Spine, it really does feel like running down the centre of the Lakes. Meet KA and bus to just before Keswick, then it’s: Walla Crag, Bleaberry Fell, High Seat, High Tove, Armboth, Ullscarf, High Raise, Sergeant Man, Blea Rigg, Silver Howe, Loughrigg and into Ambleside. 11 Wainwright’s and 19 miles, followed by a much needed curry.

A couple of days off; I head to Patterdale with KA to run some/part/all of the Grisedale race route. We head out differently, from the village towards hole’int wall but then cut right to the last checkpoint before pushing on to Birkhouse Moor, CatstyCam, Swirral Edge, Helvellyn, Grisedale Tarn, St Sunday Crag and back to Patterdale. Followed by pizza in Ambleside :-)

Run along valley, just below High Rigg and then across and climb Clough Head, Great Dodd, Watson’s Dodd, Stybarrow Dodd, Raise, White Side, Lower Man and Helvellyn. Then descend to Brown Crag, Stanah Bridge and back to Legburthwaite. Good run, 15 miles and plenty of climb.

Buttermere - Sunday 19th July 2020

We head to Buttermere, as does the whole world ! Along the back of Buttermere water, towards Scarth Gap and then High Crag, High Pike and Red Pike. Descend via the very impressive Scale Force.

Scotland - Thursday 16th - Saturday 18th July 2020

A long-awaited trip to Scotland, this time with Craig. 

We drive to Dalwhinnie, cycle (BOB Ibex en-tow) to Culra Lodge bothy (now closed) and set-up our wee basecamp by the Allt; a perfect setting. 

Then we head off on foot, climbing Lancet Edge onto the Munro Geal-Charn (1132m) and then north west to Carn Dearg (1034m).  A steep descent takes us back to basecamp and a chilled beer and even more chilled dip in the river. 

Day 2, we head off on bikes to Loch Patrick, and then west into An Lairig, we leave bikes here and head to Beinn A Chlachair (1087m), then Creag Pitridh (924m) and Geal Charn (1049m), easy slopes lead us back to the bikes and an easy ride back to the tents. A relaxing afternoon and spectacular views of the hills later in the evening. 

Day 3, up and out early. We head to Ben Alder (1148m), via Long Leurchers Edge. The weather is grim on the plateau, hat, gloves, jackets, map & compass......Scottish summer ! Careful nav leads us to the bealach, and then onto Beinn Bheoil (1019m), a quick descent and steady run back to base camp, all within 3 hours. Then it’s just a case of packing up and cycling back to Dalwhinnie for the easy drive home, via excellent fish & chips in Dunkeld.

Craig, Matt and I head off from the Riflemans; Underbarrow, Crosthwaite, Bowland Bridge, Gummers How, Lake Road, Bowness, Crook’s Corner, Troutbeck, Moor Howe Lane, Staveley (coffee and biscoff cake) and then into the storm on the way home. At times a very wet ride.

Run - Friday 26th June 2020

A very muggy start on the run along the river, but then the sun breaks and it’s turns to hot and pleasant as I head back along the canal.

Another very hot day; early BROGA and then a late afternoon 10k (well almost) on the road, very tough in the heat; 36c when I get in the car at 5:30pm !

56 mile bike ride - Sunday 21st June 2020

Unfortunately it’s windy, very windy which makes it a tough day out. But we rise to the challenge and complete our 56 mile ride in 3:59:10, and that included 3,229’ of climb. Our route took us from Natland to Crosscrake, Viver, Woodhouse, Ackenthwaite, Holme, Yealand Redmayne, Yealand Conyers, Warton, Silverdale, Arnside, Sandside, Levens Hall, Sampool, Gilpin Bridge, Witherslack, Meathop, Grange, Lindale, Winster Valley, Cartmel Fell, Cowmire Hall, Crosthwaite, Underbarrow, Brigsteer, Levens, Strickland, Sizergh Farm and back to Prizet. 

13.1 mile run - Saturday 20th June 2020

Run with KA, sort of twice round the river / canal loop from Hawks Bridge, needed to be 13.1 miles, half marathon distance. Very happy with our time: 1:46:38.

The peloton forms, Craig, Russ and Matt. We head to Brigsteer, Gilpin Bridge, Meathop, Gramge, Cartmel (think coffee & cake), Whitestones, Gummers How (think tough climb), Bowland Bridge, Crosthwaite, Underbarrow, another tough climb, Kendal. About 40 miles and 3,000’ climb.

Head form Newby Bridge to Cartmel, Allithwaite, Cark, Haverthwaite, Bouth, Spark Bridge, East side of Coniston, Drunken Duck (closed !), Hawkshead, Cunsey, Lakeside and back to Newby Bridge. 50miles and 996m of climb. 

Then home for a relaxing Pilates session.

So a very different world now; it took a few weeks for me to recover but, everyday, I managed to get out for a walk or steady ride. Then back to running, biking, BROGA, HIIT and Pilates, aim for two things a day and longer rides and runs at the weekends. Life pull be worse, but I miss the Lakeland Fells and Scotland; hopefully won’t be too long before these are a possibility. But the biking is good, some longer routes: Shap, Orton & Tebay and then Sedbergh, Kirkby Lonsdale and Old Hutton with Craig. Some runs from Sedbergh with Kathleen too.

KA and I run from Skelwith; 15 mins warm-up, 6 mins hard, 90 secs recover, 5 mins hard, 90 secs recovery and so on, then a long warm-down, a good session.

Carnethy 5 - Saturday 15th February 2020

I always look forward to this early season classic, and it can often be a tough day, this year storm Dennis made sure if that. CB and I head up to Penicuik, just outside Edinburgh, it’s a wet drive but not too bad. The start field is wild at the best of times but we shelter in the marquee until the last minute. It’s a mad dash at the start, like a scene from a war film great fun. 

Once heading up the hill the full force of the wind hit, character building stuff. Sort of loved it really, but hard work, although more sheltered when we dropped down the back. I run reasonably wells felt fairly strong and got stuck in to the last climb. By no means a quick time, I can blame the wind, but not disappointed with my run. 

A long day out and an enjoyable pint with CB when back in town.

WCOC Beer Trail - Sunday 2nd February 2020

So the organiser, Jamie, kindly keeps the course in place for an extra weekend, this gives me the opportunity that I seem to not had in the last few weeks to give it a go !

Not the brightest of days, actually not surprisingly it’s wet, windy, cold, low cloud and generally miserable, again. But anyway I head over to Loweswater and tackle the long course. The ground is sodden, and my non-waterproof map does its best to disintegrate. But despite that, I get round, definitely not quick, but steady and in the right direction.

But it is a course that keeps on giving, the last control was a welcome relief and still some goodies left, together with the visitor book. Glad I did it, thank you WCOC.

Nine Standards Fell Race - Wednesday 1st January 2020

A clear head and under-indulged at Christmas should bode well. I like this race and it’s been a couple of years since I was last here. I run well, conditions are good and, although far from my quickest time, I’m pleased with my run. 

A very long quick catch-up - Monday 26th August to 31st December 2019

29th August - 2nd September - OMM Alps with KA; a fantastic trip to Lenzerheide and a great mountain marathon......oh, and we won the B Course, 1st Mixed, 1st Mixed Vets and 1st overall !!

7/9 - Grisedale Horseshoe - a good race and I ran well.

1-17/9 - Sweden. A couple of days in Stockholm, including the ABBA museum. Then fly north to trek hut-to-hutbin Jämtland. Love Sweden.

20-22/9 - Salomon Ring of Steall Skyline Race - didn’t go to plan, KA to hospital, me pushed on. What a great route but too many people.

5/10 - Legs 3 & 2 of Hodgson Brothers Relay

12/10 - Manor Water, great race North of the Border.

19/10 - British Relays, Dark Peak, nav leg for me and Peter G, we do ok.

27/10 - Ennerdale Trail race, ran well, but disappointed with new shoes :-(

2/11 - Tinto Hill Race

10/11 - Great Gable, Remembrance Day Service.
