Arnside Ride - Saturday 28th April 2012

Up and out early - a bright but, again, breezy day.

Head to Arnside on the back lanes, a good route. Busy at Arnside, an 'Across the Bay ' charity walk about to set off. Fortunately once they go the cafe empties...in I go, coffee and cake.

Then head back.....into the wind ! This is hard, resistance training and I am glad of some shelter after Heversham.

Just over 20 miles, a good ride out.

Luchtime run - Friday 27th April 2012

Usual route - take it easy today, another race at the weekend.

A windy ride - Thursday 26th April 2012

Head out on usual route, in to the wind along the Lyth Valley - this is hard going. A bit easier on the way back.

Training - Wednesday 25th April 2012

Another cold and windy night on the Helm. Billy has us race walking, 8 reps with a sprint to start and finish each one - good stuff !

River / canal Run - Tuesday 24th April 2012

A lunchtime run today, along river to Hawes Bridge and back along canal - hope all this training pays off.

Training - Monday 23rd April 2012

So after a 5 hour drive home from Cambridge I have just 10 minutes to get ready for training - legs not keen to work after being static for so long.

And so to training, back at Kirbie Kendal - not any easier though but I run ok.

Lyth Valley ride - Sunday 22nd April 2012

Busy day today so just manage a ride around my usual route late afternoon....then a 3hr drive to Kettering.....what fun !

Anniversary Waltz - Saturday 21st April 2012

Another new race for me and a real classic. A great atmosphere and a great route. There is a heavy downpour before the start but the cloud base is above the fells and it then stays dry.

I set-off fast, probably too fast, and am first out of the field....but then soon overtaken. I run strong along the tracks and climb well to Robinson. The ground is dry and the route is obvious, on to Hindscarth and fast running to Dale Head. I get a good line down to the right of the tarn and pass Lawrence who is tacking the longer race.

I then pass Russ who is out supporting and have a great run over Maiden Moor to Catbells and a fast descent to the finish. I am pleased with my 15th place and 1hr 52mins 59secs time.

River / canal run - Friday 20th April 2012

Heavy downpours today but only seem to be at lunchtime ! It's muddy, not been like this for a while. usual route, out along river and back along canal path. Good to be out but take it steady, Anniversary Waltz tomorrow.

Lyth Valley Ride - Thursday 19th April 2012

I'm beginning to be repetitive but, as usual, I head out around the route - a strong wind is blowing down the Lyth Valley and makes this long, flat section hard going tonight.

Training - Wednesday 18th April 2012

A cold, blowy night on the Helm. Legs are tired again and I am conscious of my race this coming weekend. I work hard though and manage the full 8 up & down reps on the largest slope....glad when it's over !

Place Fell - Tuesday 17th April 2012

An odd days holiday to use up and I could do with a leisurely day. I head over to Hartsop and run along the valley before a gradual ascent to Boredale Hause; then onto Place Fell, have not been on this fell for years. Good running across the top and then drop down to Ullswater and follow the shore path back to Patterdale and then reverse outward route to Hartsop.

Quick drink in the Hawkshead Brewery on the way home - a good day out.

Lyth Valley Ride - Monday 16th April 2012

Legs a little tired from the weekend....track training would not be sensible, so head out around usual Lyth valley route. It's good to be out and this option does me much more good.

Highlander Mountain Marathon - Friday 13th, Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th April 2012

So Russ and I are again entered in the Highlander and we head a long way North to Kinlochewe, the area for this year’s event. Out journey follows a similar pattern, a mid-morning set-off and then late lunch in Tiso on the edge of Perth.

We arrive in Kinlochewe in good time for registration and food and park the camper for the night at the village hall, the event HQ. Registration is a fuss-free process and we are soon heading to the Kinlochewe Hotel for beer and possibly food; however, all the tables are booked so after a couple of pints we head back to the Whistle Stop Café for a sumptuous dinner.

After a good night’s sleep, a hot shower and last minute panic over what kit to take, we head to our start, the parking area for Slioch. We are in the B course, so less decision making for us this year. Our first control at a small lochan, 300m above where we start. We climb well and soon locate the control; next is a long section a NNE direction, it starts to snow but this is no big deal, the wind is light and the snow dry.

Again we easily find the control and are again filmed by the Scottish Adventure Show (not sure when this will be screened). Some route choice for us here, we decide shorter with more climbing and I agree with Russ that this makes the most sense. Up towards Slioch, then a contour and again easily find the control. Controls 3 to 4 are short and then we follow a good stalkers path to Lochan Fada. We are moving well, the weather is still on our side and life is good.

Across the end of the lochan and then a steep climb to control 5 on the bealach. We find a good contour route to 6 and later see that we are the quickest team, on this leg. Short section to 7, where we could have easily been caught out by the confusing ground, and then steadily down to 8. From here to the day 1 finish was the usual downhill charge and having dibbed we then wait at Loch Maree for the short RIB ride across the loch and the overnight camp.

We set-up camp and learn that we are 5th in our class, finishing in 6hrs 21mins – a good result for day 1, we need to keep this going on day 2. We sleep well and wake to falling snow, it looks like it this might last all day and visibility is poor. However, 10 minutes later the sun is shining but we are in for a cold day. We chat with Charlie and Lawrence who are competing and leading in the Score class.

We set off and decide to run along the old road and then a short, sharp climb to control 1; this again proves a good plan. 1 to 2 is arduous, a 7km trudge along Strath Lungard, but the views to the Torridian mountains helps to make this less of a struggle. From 2 we cross and tussocky area before a big climb into the snow to control 3 at a small lochan, North of Meall Ghiuthais. The end is in sight, 3 to 4 is quick running and then we follow a decent path most of the way to 5. 5 to 6 and 6 to7 pass quickly and we then have a short run along a surfaced path to the finish at the village hall.

We had run well again and finished the day 5th and were 5th overall in our class, and picking up a prize for 1st place in the Vet category. Happy days. The Highlander again proves to be a great event in a spectacular area, I’m sure we’ll be back again next year.

Lyth Valley Ride - Thursday 12th April 2012

A busy night but manage a quick zip around usual bike route.

Thursday 12 April 2012

Loughrigg Fell Race - Wednesday 11th April 2012

This is one of my favourite short races and the first of the year.

The weather clears, it is a warm and sunny evening, ideal conditions. As usual, a good Helm turn-out although not as many as I would expect...but it is Coledale on Saturday. I set off first and lead the race out of the park and across the bridge, not a great plan as I die very soon into the steep track !

Anyway, I continue to run well and am puzzled by others route choice....their loss, my gain. These short races are never easy, full on from the start. Not sure of position at the summit but continue to run well on the way down, good to shout and receive encouragement to / from other Helm runners. Again, I am puzzled by others route choice...but again their loss my gain.

I run strong and hold off any overtakers, finish 8th and 1st MV40 - good result. Helm also get LV40 (Kath) and Ladies Team prize and, I think, Lauren picks up a prize U18's (?). Just hope I have not over-done-it, Highlander Mountain Marathon this weekend.

Lunchtime run - Tuesday 10th April 2012

A cool and showery day, I head out at lunchtime along the river to Hawes Bridge and back along canal. Get caught in a couple of heavy downpours and, unusually, there is some mud to contend with !

Monday 9 April 2012

Ride - Monday 9th April 2012

The forecast is rubbish for today but actually it does not turn out quite so bad.

I head out early on the bike to Staveley, via Sedgwick, Sizergh, Levens, Brigsteer, Underbarrow and Crook. I stay dry and stop at More for a bacon roll and coffee.

Head back along the top road, behind Bowston and Burneside to cross the A6 at Skelsmergh. Then Mealbank, Paddy Lane and across the Helm before dropping down to Natland - 24 mile route.

The return section is wet and cold, a hot shower is very welcome.

LDWA Grasmere - Fells, Tarns & Gingerbread Route - Easter Sunday 8th April 2012

This is a very popular event which I have yet to run in; I have been told the route is great so decide to head out for a recce of it.

The weather is a bit mixed but I am soon heading out of Grasmere and up to Alcock Tarn, a great vantage point. From here, then cut across the fell to join the Horseshoe between Nab Scar and Heron Pike. Over Heron, then Great Rigg before the steady climb to Fairfield. Here it is cold, misty and a little wet so do not wait around, head West (checking compass) and steep scree decent to Grisedale Hause.

From here down to the A591 but on a different route to the OCT, this event takes the higher path which then descends Little Tongue. It has now turned wet but decide to carry on up Green Burn and an ascent to the ridge which joins Calf Crag and Helm Crag. Along the ridge to the popular summit of Helm Crag, the weather has now cleared.

Double back to the Hause and then descend South West in to Far Easedale. Then up to Easedale Tarn, I recall when I was last here....with Russ in the Saunders last year, it must have been at least 20c warmer then...and perhaps too hot.

The weather is not great and I decide to head back down the main path to Grasmere.....coffee and cake is calling ! A good run out, I will be back again to complete the last section over Silver Howe and Loughrigg soon.

Lakes 50 Recce - Saturday 7th April 2012

Arrange to run with Russ and cover some of the Lakes 50 route. The weather is good and after breakfast at More Bakery I pick Russ up and head to Pooley Bridge. Here we meet some other guys recce'ing the route, their day will much longer than ours !

We head out of Pooley Bridge The Cockpit, an ancient stone circle and then head West and then South West along a good track to the checkpoint at Howtown; this section brings back good memories of when I was racing in the Lakes 100 last summer and Garry and Craig were shouting abuse (or perhaps words of encouragement) from Arthur's Pike.

We check out the checkpoint at Howtown and then head along Fusedale to cross the Roman Road and the highest section of the entire route. This is familiar ground as I had run down this way just a couple of weeks ago with Charlie.

Across the ridge and we then run down over High Kop and then Low Kop before starting to descend to the footbridge over Measand Beck at Fordingdale Bottom. We do go all the way down to this, but recce the route from higher up, time is against us.

We then head back up the ridge and turn North to follow the Roman Road over Wether Hill and Loadpot Hill. This also serves as a recce for Russ's Joss Naylor Challenge (JNC) which is planned for this big Birthday in November !

From Loadpot Hill we head to Arthur's Pike and descend through the caravan park to the Howtown road, we check this as an alternative route out of Pooley Bridge for the JNC. It works, after a short road section a path across fields brings us the Pooley Bridge - we just need to remember this....in reverse and at 4am on a late November morning !

A good day out, about 4 hours of steady running and we manage time for a quick pint in the Hawkshead Brewery on the way home.

Lyth Valley Ride - Good Friday 6th April 2012

Jobs to get done at home this morning and then head out for a quick ride around the usual route....a bit uneventful really !

Loughrigg / Silver Howe - Thursday 5th April 2012

After the wintry weather yesterday, the day has been good and an evening run is very appealing.

I head over to Ambleside and park 'under Loughrigg'. Head out on the race route, first to Loughrigg summit (good training / recce for next week's Loughrigg race) and then across Red Bank to Silver Howe. There is a cold wind blowing but the views are fantastic.

Had not expected to get this far but very glad that I did. Head back the same way, over Loughrigg and straight back down, missing out Lilly Tarn, to the car; then a welcome coffee, it is a cold night.

Training...back on the Helm - Wednesday 4th April 2012

At last we are back on the Helm but, a so often is the case, it is far from a warm summer's evening !

We head over the back of the Helm, to the big climb but tonight it is the big descent.....8 of them to be exact.

Downhill training, this is good and is what I need. Seems odd that the run back to the top is the recovery but it works.

A good session....thanks Billy.

Lunchtime Run - Tuesday 3rd April 2012

Usual route through park, along river to Hawes Bridge and then back along the canal - didn't think I would get out today but pleased to have...but legs still not good.

Massage tonight at Body Rehab, hopefully that will help the situation :-/

Training - Monday 2nd April 2012

A short session tonight....Shaun has limited time...I am pleased but it is no easier, legs not in great shape after Saturday !

Monday 2 April 2012

Lyth Valley ride - Sunday 1st April 2012

A busy day, I manage to get out for an hour on my bike late afternoon - a quick blast around my usual Lyth Valley route - there is a cold breeze, I am glad of my Gore Windstopper top.

Coniston 14 - Saturday 31st March 2012

I entered this some months ago and had not trained specifically for a road race - I had no idea how I would do or what pace to set-off at.

A good Helm turn-out: Kath, Dave R, Geoff, Ian and Leonie and, perhaps, a few more. The day is cooler but dry, ideal running conditions.

I start near the front and am soon passed by a few runners; however, I run hard, don't feel relaxed but don't let that slow me, and on the East side of the lake I start to gain some places.

I am constantly calculating my pace and possible finish time, maybe inside 1hr 30mins ?

I continue to run strong all the way to the finish - the crowds in the village of Coniston give tremendous support and will me on. I finish in 1hr 25mins 59secs - I am pleased with this and come 17th, and in the prizes :-)

A long day in London - Friday 30th March 2012

...so no time for a run or ride !

A run with Tim - Thursday 29th March 2012

I have not run with Tim or even had much time to chat with him for a while so we arrange a lunchtime run.

We meet at the Racecourse layby (Scout Scar) and, in glorious sunshine, set-off on a route to Helsington Church and then, for me, back on my usual route. We run well together and catch-up on things, the steep climb leads us to my favourite place on the Scar, the vista opens up before our eyes.

Across to the Mushroom and back down to the layby - out for about an hour, a good run, with good company - thanks Tim.

I manage a quick zip out on the bike later, usual Lyth Valley route - this is good :-)

Potter Fell - Wednesday 28th March 2012

I decide against training, another sunny evening so I head to Staveley for a run to Potter Tarn and Potter Fell.

There is no one about and I have the fell to myself, a great time of day to be out. A bit cooler but the ground is so dry.....dry feet and clean fell shoes :-)

Not out for long but sometimes a quick fix is all that's needed.

River / canal run - Tuesday 27th March 2012

It is another sunny day and I head out from the office along the river to Hawes Bridge; back along the canal, it's good to be out but legs are still in a bad way !

Training - Monday 26th March 2012

Thanks Russ....legs are trashed completely and I know I'm not the only one suffering....

Training is hard, legs are tight and sore, I get through the session but that's about all I can say !
