Staveley Ride - Good Friday 29th March 2013

Head out on bike, another cold day....this last phrase is becoming a bit repetitive but I guess better than saying "another wet day" !

Up drive, down Windermere Road, cut through Kendal Green, Burneside then towards Longsleddale; cut left across a high road, right towards Staveley and then right again for a high loop down to village.

I'm in luck, Wilf's is still open so pop in for coffee and cake. Head out of village towards Crook then Plumgarths and downhill all the way home.

I've cracked it, feet and hands stay warm......Gore Bike Wear, it's expensive but well worth it.

River / canal run - Thursday 28th March 2013

I don't manage to get out at lunch, waiting for Autoglass ! So head out at 5, guess what.....it's bitterly cold again ! But a glorious evening, out along river and some company on the way back; a good run.

Training - Wednesday 27th March 2013

Cold again. We head up to the golf course; only 4 reps, sounds easy but each one consists of 2 different reps that we have previously endured ! So a tough session and one that I struggle with - a late lunch of cheese, bread and pork pies lays heavy on the stomach, not good !

Tuesday 26 March 2013

Exploring, again - Tuesday 26th March 2013

Still to cold to head out on bike and need a rest from running so I go exploring. There must be a direct way to the golf course and then access to Cunswick; so I wonder up my drive and then cross some fields to join the main path - great there is easy access. I have a wonder around, some new paths, some well known.

The light evenings are good but still there's an arctic blast and it's set to stay with us over Easter, that my plan of the Lakes 3000's blown away :-(

Training - Monday 25th March 2013

Another bitterly cold night. I train hard but can feel yesterday's race in my legs. 16 reps, glad when its over, no offence Shaun.

Great Grizedale Trail Race - Sunday 24th March 2013

So with Edale cancelled I needed to come up with a B plan; Russ and Craig were heading to the Howgills, Kath mentions the Great Grizedale Forest Trail Race - this sounds good, 10 miles and the relative shelter of the forest to run in.

So I head over to Grizedale Visitor Centre for a 1pm start; the roads are clear but the snow deep in places, it's also cold and a bitter easterly wind. The race starts a little further up the track than in the past; the track is icy in places. I decide on my Inov-8 Oroc's 290's, this proves to be a great choice; just the right amount of bite.

About 60 runners set off, we are warned of ice and also deep soft snow; fortunately a 4x4 had driven around the course and the tyre tracks made for relatively easy running but drift either side of these and then I found myself floundering ins deep powder snow. The views towards the Coniston fells are fantastic, the running good and weather cold but ideal for running.

I run well and I run hard; at some points in 3rd place and at times 5th or 6th. The course is well marked, bright spray paint shows up very well in pure white snow. I manage to pick up the pace in the last couple of miles and finish 3rd overall and 1st V40.

Kath also runs well and finishes 2nd Lady V40.

A great race and good day out.

Saturday 23 March 2013

Just a walk - Saturday 23rd March 2013

Bizarrely Kendal escapes the snow, it is just to the North, just to the South, just to the East and just to the West and in all of those places, plenty of it. Tomorrow's race is cancelled, I respect that decision but can't help being disappointed.

Just out for two short walks today, one to Lambrigg with Barney and the other exploring the paths from my new home; a figure of eight again, to Burneside and back. Was hoping to get out on bike but the wind is even stronger and even colder today, there would be no fun in that.

River / Canal Run - Friday 22nd March 2013

Late in to work so wait until 5 to head out from the office for a run. Put in an extra mile or so, a kind of figure of eight loop. Bitterly cold wind, no day to hang around; mud not too bad but light soon fades.

Thursday 21 March 2013

Monday 18 March 2013

Training - Monday 18th March 2013

Shaun is back and seems intent on making up for missing a week ! The session goes quick and I work hard. A cold night but at least dry.

Sunday 17 March 2013

Levens Park & Scout Scar Run - Sunday 17th March 2013

A friend from work is on hols, staying at the caravan site in Sedgwick; Lee is in training for the London Marathon and suggested a run out. It's his intention to cover 18 miles but the fresh snow and my undulating, off road route changes his plans !

We head over to the canal path and follow this to Levens Bridge; back along the river and then cut up to Sizergh; then a steady climb up onto the Scar. Having spent the first hour running in slush and mud we are now in deeper fresh snow, but also in the mist.

A good run over the Scar and we then head down to Helsington and the river. We follow this along to Hawes Bridge and then a very muddy path on the West side of the river; this brings directly back to the caravan site.

Just 12 miles but given the conditions it must be equivalent to 18 ! Head straight to the showers, bliss and then Jackie makes us coffee and bacon sandwiches, bliss again :-)

Coniston Fells - Saturday 16th March 2013

Not a great forecast, Russ and I revise plans and head to Coniston rather than to the Northern Lakes. Usual route to Wetherlam, we are soon in soft, wet snow and it is snowing lightly. Visibility is poor as are the light conditions, this makes for difficult navigation as it's difficult to tell what is up, what is down, what is sky and what is the ground !

From the summit, once we had finally agreed we were at the summit, we use the compass to head towards Prison Band. Very confusing, the path is hidden by fresh snow, are we too high or too low, we trust the compass, push on and arrive where we want to be.

We climb well and are soon on Swirl How; it gets easier from here, a gradual descent and then climb Brim Fell and then onto the Old Man. From here we aim for Dow Crag, but again the ground is confusing but no serious problems. Over Dow Crag, onto Brown Pike and then a steady run down the Walna Scar road back to the village.

Coffee and treacle tarts back at the car, just what we need.

Saturday 16 March 2013

Loughrigg / Silver Howe Race Route - Friday 15th March 2013

Have a meeting early afternoon so take advantage of this and head over to Ambleside.....my running kit just happens to be in the back of the Quattro :-)

The earlier rain has cleared and the fells look stunning. Decide on the Loughrigg / Silver Howe race route, again; this is becoming one of my favourite shorter fell runs.

Good running, wetter underfoot than it has been but still great to be out. Back after a couple of hours and then after a quick turnaround head to the Beer Festival at Staveley.

Rest Day - Thursday 14th March 2013

A miserable day so decide to take a rest today.

Training - Wednesday 13th March 2013

A milder night, we head up to golf course; 5 reps, long steady climbs on a track, not that this makes it any easier.

Cunswick Winter League Race Route - Tuesday 12th March 2013

Manage to get home a littler earlier from work so head out for a run. I have yet to explore the possibilities of running from home to the golf course so opt to drive the short distance to Queens Road. The weather is good and I head up and over the golf course onto Cunswick Scar.

It's a cracking race route, a good twisty descent and then some fast running before a tough climb up Gamblesmire Lane. Back to the summit and then a fast descent back to car; make it back before dark, we've turned the corner :-)

Training - Monday 11th March 2013

Another bitterly cold night and only a few of us there. Shaun is away so Billy takes charge, he has no plan so we each lead a rep, this works well and makes a welcome change.

Burneside Ride - Sunday 10th March 2013

A busy day and I can spare just an hour to get out on my bike. It is a bitterly cold day and the odd flurry of snow adds to the prolonged wintry spell.

My long driveway is uphill but then an easy roll down Windermere Road and on to Burneside Road. To Burneside and then head towards Longsleddale; cut left on a small lane towards Staveley and below Potter Tarn and Potter Fell. The bright sun and flurries of snow make it difficult to see, I hit a pot hole and hit it hard ! Results in an instant flat rear tyre :-(

Fingers go numb changing the tube and I then decide to head straight home for a hot shower; at least my driveway is downhill on the way back.

Fairfield Horseshoe - Saturday 9th March 2013

Not a great forecast: cold, breezy, snowy, misty, icy....!!!!

So decide to play safe and head round my favourite fell run route, the Fairfield Horseshoe.

The going is tough, lots of ice and a dusting of fresh snow on top. Micro spikes soon on but a lesson learnt, also know when to take them off, they can 'ball-up' in soft snow !

Hail, sleet and snow sting my face and drive into my eyes; the summit if Fairfield is a harsh place today; I take care, it is close to whiteout conditions and no place to be complacent.

I push on, see no one and, eventually, a relief to have the wind behind me and drop out of the cloud. It's good to get back to the car; coffee and cake, plus warm, dry clothes are very welcome.

A satisfying day and I'm kept on my toes.

Rest Day - Friday 8th March 2013

Feel exhausted so decide to have a rest day !

Friday 8 March 2013

inov-8 Mudclaw 265's

I was fortunate enough to be given a pair of these a few months ago; they are the direct replacement for the outgoing Mudclaw 272’s (the Mudclaw 300’s, launched in September 2012, were the replacements for the 330’s).

The main differences between these and the 272’s are that the sole unit is flat, not rounded (if you place either on a flat service and look at them from the back you will see exactly what I mean). I often felt that on harder ground the 272’s had a tendency to roll inwards or outwards but the 265’s remain flat, a noticeable and significant improvement, particularly if you are already prone to under or over pronating.

Elsewhere, the materials used on the upper are far more resilient to wear and tear, despite being slightly lighter. After 3 months of hard use during some pretty foul conditions the uppers are showing little sign of wear, again a significant improvement over the 272’s which, for me at least, wore very quickly. The grade of rubber used for the soles and the stud pattern is much the same, so there is some wearing down and rounding of the studs but despite this they are still gripping well and not letting me down.

I have noticed that the heel cup on the new 300’s is relatively high, whereas the on the 265’s it is much lower, this suits my Achilles and the shoes have felt very comfortable right from the start; there was no breaking in required.

One thing to bear in mind, I have been a consistent size 8.5 in all Inov-8 footwear, however I have gone down to a size 8 in the 265’s and felt the fit to be perfect.

In summary, these are the best Inov-8’s I have ever had; they are ideal for both racing and training in just about all conditions and have become the fell shoe that I choose above all others when heading out; they suit my feet perfectly and have not let me down; I would happily recommend them.

Two runs today - Thursday 7th March 2013

Head out at lunch for usual river / canal run; not as muddy as it has been.

During the evening I head up on to Cunswick Scar to run the new Helm Winter League race route 0- should be good, shame I can't make it.

Training - Wednesday 6th March 2013

Training on the Castle tonight, only 5 reps but each one involves two climbs to the Castle and two descents ! A mild night, over dressed and find it hard going.

Loughrigg & Silver Howe - Tuesday 5th March 2013

Another glorious day, head over to Ambleside to run the Loughrigg and Silver Howe race route.

Loughrigg fell race route to the summit, then steep descent to Red Bank and then long steady run to Silver Howe. The route back differs only slightly, taking in Lilly Tarn.

It is warm and sunny but views obscured by haze. Great to be out. This route is always a little longer than I expect, about 8.5 miles and just over 2 hours.

Training - Monday 4th March 2013

Usual training, hard work but sort of rewarding !

Sedbergh Ride - Sunday 3rd March 2013

Head out from Natland on bike, through Oxenholme, Old Hutton, Bendrigg, Killington to Sebergh and then along towards Cautley. Back a similar route, about 30 miles in total.

Staveley Run - Saturday 2nd March 2013

I can see Potter Fell and Brunt Knott from my kitchen window so with limited time available feel that an appropriate objective for my run.

Short drive to Staveley then along the river Kent and up to Potter Tarn. On to Gurnal Dubs and then Potter Fell and Brunt Knott.

Back to Staveley for coffee and cake.

A busy day - Friday 1st March 2013

Having bought a house yesterday, I move in today - no time for a run or ride but plenty of manual labour !

Fairfield - Thursday 28th February 2013

A busy day but I can spare themorning for a quick run around the Horseshoe - my favourite fell run.

The day is glorious, bright sunshine, blue sky and fantastic views. Still some large snowy patches and the microspikes come in handy.

Stop in for lunch at More on the way home and then buy a house !!!
