Wednesday 27 December 2017

Swim - Wednesday 27th December 2017

Back at work today, 25 lengths in the pool this evening.

Boxing Day run, Fairfield Horseshoe - Tuesday 26th December 2017

Out with Craig, the Horseshoe looks splendid, coated in snow; however, soon after we set off it gets a further coating, we are in a blizzard most of the time and ploughing through deep soft snow - hard going, but very good to be out; then a quick beer in the Eagle & Child on the way home, thanks Craig.

Christmas Day.....Potter Tarn - Monday 25th December 2017

A short run out to build and appetite; from Staveley, along the river and then to Potter Tarn; even bump into several other Helm runners !

Scout & Cunswick Scar - Sunday 24th December 2017

6.5 miles with KA and Brams.

Potter Fell - Saturday 23rd December 2017

A short run out from Staveley with KA; along river, Potter Tarn and then Potter Fell; back to More for tea and tea cakes. Then a swim late afternoon, 25 lengths for me.

Turbo - Friday 22nd December 2017

Another very misty day and I can't face running in this. Half an hour on the turbo, listening to the Pointer Sisters......I'm so excited couldn't be any further from the truth !

Scar Run - Thursday 21st December 2017

The mist is horrendous and a bright headtorch not much better than useless. I have just a short run on the Scarm in the dark; I play safe and stick to my well used routes.

Liverpool - Wednesday 20th December 2017

Another of those all work and no play days !

River / canal run - Tuesday 19th December 2017

A misty night, out along the river and back along the river.

Swim - Monday 18th December 2017

My usual 25 lengths.

Helvellyn 10k - Sunday 17th December 2017

Not a hill race, but instead a very flat 10k road race - out and back on the west side of Thirlmere. Lots of black ice on the drive north but, surprisingly, just a wee bit milder there and only small patches of ice to contend with; but a cold and wet day. I run ok and was very pleased to get under 40 mins.....39:58, that's the first time I a while

Moffat and Scout Scar - Saturday 16th December 2017

A day trip to Moffat, it's a long story !, and aborted mountain biking at Newcastleton.....just too cold and too icy. So a late afternoon run on the Scar, and I'm treated to an atmospheric cloud inversion along the top.

Tuesday 12 December 2017

Full of cold - Tuesday 12th December 2017

I give exercise a miss today.

Swimming - Monday 11th December 2017

The usual, 25 lengths.

Fairfield Horseshoe - Sunday 10th December 2017

Anither glorious winter's day, cold with snow on the fells. KA and I head to Fairfield for an afternoon run, it's flippin freezin but fantastic, we finish just as the sun sets.

Helm Santa Run - Saturday 9th December 2017

A Christmas fun run and a glorious winters day for it too. Secret Santa's and mince pies / proseco en-route, how good is that. Then pie and pints in pub afterwards, thanks for organising it Chris.

River / canal run - Friday 8th December 2017

A cold evening and not the best of runs.

Circuits - Thursday 7th December 2017

A high-tempo session which I really enjoy and rise to.

Training - Wednesday 6th December 2017

3 long reps in the Greyhound, that's 6 miles plus the warm-up and warm-down; feel good and run well.

Pilates - Tuesday 5th December 2017

Another great class :-)

Swim - Monday 4th December 2017

25 lengths early evening, very relaxing after yesterday's race.

Secret Race - Sunday 3rd December 2017

Actually it's not secret, it's even in the flippin FRA calendar, but some people just like to make their point.

Anyway, KA and I head to the Hexhamshire Hobble, just as we have done twice before, and as advertised in the FRA calendar. It's a cold day, but the recent snow has all but gone; it's hard going, not cold enough to have frozen so plenty of wet, boggy ground, but still a great race, and one that we will go back to again.

Then a late Sunday lunch in an Allendale Town pub, a good way to finish the day.

Saturday 2 December 2017

Ride - Saturday 2nd December 2017

A cold and dull day, I head out on bike from home. Kendal Green, Burneside Road, Burneside, Potter Fell Road, Staveley, Kentmere Church, Staveley, Bowston, Burneside, Hollins Lane, home. 34.5km / 419m ascent.

River / canal run - Friday 1st December 2017

Ok, it's official, we can now use the C word, and I can open the 1st window on my advent calendar :-)

Oh and a run too, after work, from Natland, in the cold and dark, but a good wee run, with a 4-legged sweetie too :-)

Circuits & Pilates - Thursday 30th November 2017

Two very good sessions, my core strength must surely be improving.

Urban Orienteering, Windermere - Wednesday 29th November 2017

Another urban orienteering event; J and I take on the streets, parks and paths of Windermere; it's a very cold night but we are soon warm. We run well and navigate well, and do ok. Then fish & chips, a good evening.

Fishers, Keswick - Tuesday 28th November 2017

An evening run with and from George Fishers; a chance to try Salomon running shoes, Sunnto watches and Petzl headtorches. Followed by tapas and pizza :-)

Sunday 26 November 2017

Anniversary Waltz Race Route - Sunday 26th November 2017

A late decision, I head to Keswick, Stair to be precise, and run the AW race route, one of my favourites. But it's a tough day to be on the fells: cold, windy, clag plus mud, snow and ice - so a bit of everything; great to be out, feel alive :-)

Loughrigg - Saturday 25th November 2017

The day doesn't go to plan, but KA and I head over to Ambleside for a steady run over Loughrigg and back via Lilly Tarn.

Wednesday 22 November 2017

Tuesday 21 November 2017

Turbo - Tuesday 21st November 2017

A 30 min session on turbo: 10 min warm-up, 10 X 45 seconds steady, 15 flat-out, then 10 min warm down. A means to an end :-/

Monday 20 November 2017

Swim - Monday 20th November 2019

An early start and long day; I manage a quick swim in a crowded pool this evening.

Sunday 19 November 2017

Bike - Sunday 19th November 2017

A chilly day to be out on the road bike; a loop from home: Brigsteer, Levens, Brigsteer, Underbarrow, Crook, Plumgarths, home.

Glentress 21km Trail Race - Saturday 18th November 2017

I race in the half marathon, a spectacular route up through Glentress forest and back down on the Black mountain bike run. Glorious weather, good company and well organised.....a happy day :-)

Edinburgh - Friday 17th November 2017

Heading North for work and then to Peebles / Glentress for tomorrow's race.

River / river run - Thursday 16th November 2017

I manage a short run out along the river and back along the otherside......muddy !

Wednesday 15 November 2017

1st Nov: It's my Birthday; run with KA, from Rydal, Nab Scar, Alcocks Tarn, Grasmere, Silver Howe, Loughrigg Terrace, Rydal; followed by lunch at Chester's. Then 'urban orienteering' in Kendal in the evening, ran with a very fast 17 year old, now that was hard work !

13th Nov: An evening swim.

14th Nov: Pilates.

15th Nov: Circuits and Training, a fartlek session on the canal path.

Friday 13 October 2017

Swim - Friday 13th October 2017

Up and out early for a swim, the rest of the day just disappears.

Beinn Iutharn Mhor - Thursday 12th October 2017

Heading home today but feel the need to bag a Munro, sadly a poor total this year, just 11:-(

I drive back to Inverey and again bike into Altanour Lodge; after speaking with the Ghillie, I change my route to avoid a stalk. Either way it's a long hard climb to the summit at 1045m. It's seriously windy on the summit plateau, cold too.  I don't stop long, just a quick chat with another walker, one of the few I've seen all week and then straight back down, fast ride out and long drive home.  A good trip.

Glenlivet Mountain bike trials - Wednesday 11th October 2017

Walking and running muscles need a rest, so head to Glenlivet for some mountain biking; this must be one of the most spectacular drives in the UK.

It's a low key centre but I'm soon fixed up with a mountain bike and head off on the Red Trail,22k in total with a contours 6k singe track downhill section. Again the weather is glorious, but breezy up high; I make it to the summit of Carn Daimh, 570m, a have glorious views to Ben Rinnes where I raced earlier in the year.

It's a great couple of hours biking and I manage to pack in 464m of climb, that's hardly resting my legs though.

Mount Keen - Tuesday 10th October 2017

Another bright and dry day but windy and my legs are tired from Pentland. I decide on Mount Keen, so drive past Balmoral, Ballater and turn just before Aboyne, into Glen Tanar; a beautiful glen with fantastic pine forest.

I park at the visitor centre and then, again, mountain bike in to the base of the hill; from there is a steep pull up a well worn path to the summit at 939m; breezy but fantastic views; it's a quick walk back down and an even quicker ride back out.

I celebrate a good day by eating out, venison and game pie, followed by crumble....washed down with a local dark beer and full bodied glass of red.....perfect :-)

Carn Bhac - Monday 9th October 2017

After staying overnight in Perth and then dealing with some life admin, I head to Braemar and, more specifically, Inverey. It's a last minute plan, thrown together, but should work.

I mountain bike 8k up Glen Ely to Altanour Lodge and then take a steady walk up Carn Bhac, 946m. It doesn't take too long and the weather is kind; back down the same way and then a very fast bike back out to Inverey; quick cuppa (it's so good to have my camper back) and then back down the road to the campsite in Braemar, one of my favourite places.

Pentland Skyline - Sunday 8th October 2017

A race I've been wanting to do for a while; 26k / 1890m and the fourth and final Scottish Long Race this year, which means I've completed the series.

Conditions are good, dry, clear and a bit breezy. I arrive in plenty of time, it's only a short drive out from my city hotel. The start is half way up a hill, that's good :-) As usual now, I set off steady and get stronger. Some of the route is familiar as it covers the Carnethy 5; I make the cut-off with 20 minutes to spare and then, as Craig would say, the big old Diesel engine was warmed up and just keep on chugging away....lots of torque too !

This race is not without climb, they come little and often and then every third or fourth one comes a toughie; I keep climbing well, running some of them and overtake tiring racers. I finish in 3:36,  a long way down the field but I felt good and was pleased with my time. It's a cracking race, hopefully I'll be back next year with KA as originally planned.

Edinburgh - Saturday 7th October 2017

Nothing quite goes to plan today, leave late afternoon for Edinburgh.

Friday 6 October 2017

Road run (!) - Friday 6th October 2017

Another road run, 10.5k loop at lunchtime from the office....Levens, Strickland, Force Bridge, Hincaster, Heversham and back to Levens; Achilles is agony but calves ok, thank you Hoka's.

Circuits - Thursday 5th October 2017

Another tough session, but pain for pound the score is high !! :-)

Arthur's Seat & Training - Wednesday 4th October 2017

I'm up early, the weather is not great, but as is tradition I head out for a pre-breakfast run up Arthur's Seat; it's a bit wet, a bit windy, a bit dark and a bit cloudy but could be worse and I am defo glad I made the effort.

Then back to Oxenholme at 6:15, just enough time to get changed and head onto a very wet, muddy and dark Helm for training......two runs in one day, that gets me in trouble !!!

Edinburgh - Tuesday 3rd October 2017

A long day in Edinburgh, all work and no play, but a good day.

Monday 2 October 2017

River / Canal Run - Monday 2nd October 2017

I head out at lunchtime, during a dry spell. From Prizet, along the river to Force Bridge and then back on the canal path.....muddy !

Sunday 1 October 2017

Ian Hodgson Relay - Sunday 1st October 2017

I head over to Patterdale with KA to support her and the other Helm Teams. It's short coursed due to the weather; I watch the start from Side Farm and then head down the valley to Hartsop and watch her finish and the changeovers; then a steady run back.

Saturday 30 September 2017

Loughrigg / Silver Howe Race Route - Saturday 30th September 2017

A very wet morning, I head over to Ambleside, lacking motivation.....so some retail therapy and coffee. I decide to head home and go out later when the forecast was set to improve.....however, traffic is backed up soon after Low Wood so I do a u'ey and head back to Under Loughrigg, I need to man up !

I run the Loughrigg Silver Howe race route, about 8.5 miles and 2,500'. It's wet but I enjoy and it even improves towards the end; glad I went but then a bad journey home, at least I make it to More in time to get the last sausage roll:-)

Friday 29 September 2017

Road run.....again - Friday 29th September 2017

Road running.....again ! I head out from the office, Heversham, Hincaster, Sedgwick, Sizergh and Levens. 55 mins.

Circuits & Pilates - Thursday 28th September 2017

Another tough Thursday; circuits and Pilates, both top classes.

Road Run - Wednesday 27th September 20

Back in time from Liverpool to catch the start of the rain. A wet and miserable evening. We run 7.8 miles on the road......good training.

Liverpool - Tuesday 26th September 2017

Once again it's all work and no play.

Monday 25 September 2017

Swim - Monday 25th September 2017

My legs are officially trashed; I manage a steady 25 lengths at the pool, which helps, I think !?

Wansfell 10k Trail Race (Festival of the Fells) - Sunday 24th September 2017

Why am I running another race today, my legs are trashed from yesterday ?! Anyway KA and I head to Ambelside, along with 37 other runners, for this trail (more like fell to me) race.

It's very wet underfoot but otherwise good running weather; a great route, we do ok and are soon back in town enjoying lunch.

Two Breweries Hill Race - Saturday 23rd September 2017

So to my third Scottish Long Championship race, and second time running this one; I couldn't persuade KA to join me this year.

It's an early start but easy drive to Broughton, not as far as I had thought. Plenty of time to have some tea and porridge and sort kit before boarding the bus to Traquair House. Now just 29km and 1700m of ascent / descent, plus lots of heather, tussocks and bog lies between me and my car ! Love it !!

The earlier blue skies disappear and are replaced with overcast skies and, on the summits, mist and drizzle, but still much better weather than last year. I run well and feel ok, with a strong finish. 4:09 for me this year, I'm happy with that.

Run - Friday 22nd September 2017

A structured running session.....madness before a long, hard race !

Circuits and Pilates - Thursday 21st September 2017

A tough couple of sessions; I suffer, and not just for today.

Helm training - Wednesday 20th September 2017

Another early start and long day out; I make it back in time for training, just, but not really in the op mood and give up before the session finishes.

London - Tuesday 19th September 2017

All work and no play, a long day in the City.

Swim and yoga - Monday 18th September 2017

A swim at lunch and the Yoga in the evening.

Fairfield Horseshoe - Sunday 17th September 2017

I was just getting myself organised when a change of plan sees me heading to Rydal for a steady run around Fairfield with KA. Another pleasant, no pressure run and then to Keswick for a quick potter and the tea with my Ma & Pa who are in holiday in that area.

Coniston Fells - Saturday 16th September 2017

After a tough and stressful week we decide to have a leisurely run around the Coniston race route; it's nice to be out for once without the pressure of racing, and to actually watch a race too - 3 Shires. The weather is kind and we enjoy, although don't get the perfect lines lower down ! Then into the village for lunch

Work - Friday 15th August 2017

It gets in the way again !

Run and Pilates - Thursday 14th September 2017

A very wet and muddy run along the river and back along the canal. Then to Pilates in the evening, but straight after a mad dash to Liverpool, again !

Helm training - Wednesday 13th September 2017

I make it back for Liverpool in time to head straight to the Helm for training.

Work - Tuesday 12th September 2017

And again today !

Work - Monday 11th September 2017

It gets in the way and no time for play today.

Wansfell 10k race recce - Sunday 10th September 2017

Another very wet day, KA and I head out to recce the 10k race route, we feel ok despite our mad dash of a race yesterday. Then into Ambleside for a late lunch. Back to work tomorrow, but actually that starts tonight with a very wet drive to Liverpool.

Devils Beeftub - Saturday 9th September 2017

KA and I head to Scotland to compete in another Scottish Championship race, this one is definitely not a Long; actually it's possibly, not probably, is the shortest race I have ever run....just 3.2km and 230m of climb.....madness. But actually I really enjoy it; a steep climb, run around the top with a few undulations, and then a very steep decent, all over in about 30 minutes !

Circuits and swim - Friday 8th September 2017

A hard group circuits class in the morning and then a leisurely swim in the afternoon.

Run & Pilates - Thursday 7th September 2017

So after some glorious weather so far north, I am back to heavy rain and gloom ! I struggle to motivate but eventually head out to recce the Wansfell 10km race route. Then to Pilates in the evening.

Padjelanta Trail, Sweden - Monday 28th August to Wednesday 6th August 2017

Another trip to the far north of Sweden, some 150km inside the Arctic Circle; this time it's to walk the 120km Padjelanta trail.

It's a wilderness up there and I love to immerse myself in it. Glorious easy walking with superb STF and Sammi huts for accommodation each night. So few people about, I'm sure I saw more reindeer than humans and that can't be a bad thing. Once I settle into the routine, which did take a few days, I don't want to leave; and I even get to see the northern lights on two occasions, how special is that.

Ride - Sunday 27th August 2017

A late night, early start and masses to get done before I go away tonight. But I manage a quick ride with Craig, from the Helm to Sedbergh via Bendrigg and back via Millbeck. 27.5km / 507m climb.

Then after a huge list of chores I eventually get to Manchester airport ready for morning flight to Stockholm and then further North.

Ochills 2000's - Saturday 26th August 2017

So the second of my Scottish Long Championship races, and my second year here. It's a relaxed and well organised build up, park and register at the sports centre and bus ride to the start. The weather, as it was last year, is ideal, clear and sunny but not too hot.

The race covers 32.7km with 1649m of ascent and climbs each of the Ochill summits over 2000', just about all in grassy trods. I start steady and get stronger, it also gets hotter and, as it was last year, the climb to the final summit is a real ball buster ! But I have a great descent and finish strong bit disappointing to be about 10 minutes slower than last year :-(

Then it's a quick shower, food and drink and then the long drive home. A good trip.

Heading North - Friday 25th August 2017

Big race tomorrow, head to Stirling....the walled garden campsite.

Run and Pilates - Thursday 24th August 2017

Too much to do and taking on too much; I head out for a run along the river and canal at lunch and then to Pilates in the evening.

Circuits & training - Wednesday 23rd August 2017

A tough lunchtime circuits session and then a not-enjoyable training session on Helm.

Shipman Knotts Fell Race - Tuesday 22nd August 2017

I take on my usual role, summit Marshall. The weather looks threatening, muggy and stormy, but it passes and I stay dry. As always a good evening and all enjoy, rounded off with tea and cake, and then beer - well done Russell.

Yoga - Monday 21st August 2017

A good way to loosen up after yesterday's race, but hard work.

Sunday 20 August 2017

Sedbergh Hills Fell Race - Sunday 20th August 2017

A long time since I have raced this; a bit of a late decision but actually was looking forward to it.

But it's a tough route and should not be under-estimated. 23km / 1,500m in good conditions = 3:33, I'll settle for that, especially as a big race next Saturday !

Ride - Saturday 19th August 2017

Not been out in my bike for a while; I dodge the rain and manage a 35.8km / 514m route around the Lyth Valley, Crook and Staveley (for lunch), back through Burneside.

Swim - Friday 18th August 2017

A late lunchtime swim in a near empty pool, that's just how I like it.

Run - Thursday 17th August 2017

A lunchtime run from Prizet, steady pace - that's fine by me.

Circuits & Helm Training - Wednesday 16th August 2017

A gruelling circuits session at lunchtime and then to Helm for training in the evening, a good session.

Run & Pilates - Tuesday 15th August 2017

I head out at lunchtime for a run from the office; out along the canal and back along the river.....muddy !

Then to Pilates in the evening, a tough session.

Swim - Monday 14th August 2017

A steady swim, just what was needed after a tough weekend of running.

Lowther Trail Race - Sunday 13th August 2017

Ran this last year but had forgotten it was 13 miles. But it's a pleasant day, ideal running conditions. KA and I run together, but conscious of our JNC supporting the previous day.

We run well and complete in just under 2 hours. A great route with glorious views, I could happily live in this area......in fact I have seen just the house :-)

Saturday 12 August 2017

JNC Support - Saturday 12th August 2017

A late night followed by an early start, at Dunmail soon after 7am for car drop and then to Kirkstone to meet Brian Horn on his Joss Naylor Challenge.

The weather is not great, low cloud and drizzle but he comes in ahead of schedule and on good form. KA and I take over the reigns and guide him up Red Screes, Hart Crag, Fairfield and Seat Sandal. The rains ceases and cloud lifts every so often, but comes on again as we head towards Dunmail.

But all goes well, he is running strong and eating and drinking well. We are head of schedule at the end of the leg.....job done, and we head off for a full English :-)

Swim - Friday 11th August 2017

A long day at work ahead so I head for an early morning swim - 25 lengths'ish, a good way to start the day.

Pilates & Run - Thursday 10th August 2017

A good session at Pilates and them straight out for a run: through Craggy Wood and back through Dorothy's.....brought back fond memories :-) ....... :-(

Wednesday 9 August 2017

Sunday 6 August 2017

Swim - Sunday 6th August 2017

Had planned to ride this afternoon, but had not planned that very well, should have looked at the forecast.....dry morning / wet afternoon ?!

So settle for a swim, just as wet but less unpleasant.

Borrowdale - Saturday 5th August 2017

Only race this once before, back in 2009, and had forgotten what a flippin tough one this is.

Fortunately, as it did back in 2009, the weather clears for the 11am start. It's not a great start and Bessyboot is a slog, and the trods to Esk Hause even more so. But over to Scafell Pike is better and the direct scree descent passes without incident. The Corridor Route is hard work and then, as Craig would say, the big old diesel engine kicks in and I climb strongly to Gable and appreciate seeing a friendly face on the summit.

Good running and links drop me to Honister and another friendly face their to support me. I kick hard and climb Dale Head even stronger and then it's just the descent to Rosthwaite. I have 4:30 in my sights but it goes on forever and I have to settle for 4:32; as I guessed, about an hour quicker than Wadsdale, but my body is more bust.....how can that be ?!

Circuits - Friday 4th August 2017

Another tough one, focussed on upper body as another big race this weekend.

Thursday 3 August 2017

River / Canal Run - Thursday 3rd August 2017

A bit like driving with the handbrake on today.....hard work, and very muddy too; but I manage to dodge the heavy showers.

Not the full route today, big race in Saturday and not sure my tired and stiff body could have coped with the full route.

Wansfell - Wednesday 2nd August 2017

I head over to Wansfell after work for a steady run up Wansfell. We head up into Skelghyll Wood and round to the Hundreds Road. Head up to just above Nanny Lane and to the summit of Wansfell Pike. Descend by the south west ridge and then a mystery wee path which eventually leads us back into town and the waiting GLC.

Followed by the F & C shop !

JNC Recce & Pilates - Tuesday 1st August 2017

I take the morning off work and join KA and one other for a recce of leg 2 of the JNC. We drop a car at Dunmail and then meet at Kirkstone for 9:30 set-off; it's a bit wet and low cloud but has the potential to clear.

We are soon moving fast up Red Screes and by the time we descend to Scandale Pass the cloud has lifted and there are sunny spells. Then skirt Dove Crag and to the summit of Hart Crag, we are making good time, ahead of his schedule. Then to Fairfield and the punishing descent to Grisedale Hause. It's then just a short climb to Seat Sandal and a steady, and then steep descent to Dunmail Raise.

We are up on his schedule butbthe descents hurt, still recovering from Ben Rinnes. Followed by lunch in Ambleside and a mad dash to the office.

Then a relaxing Pilates session in the evening.

Monday 31 July 2017

Swim - Monday 31st July 2017

25 lengths after work, gentle and relaxing on the legs.

Geal Charn (926m) 1 of 19 ! - Sunday 30th July 2017

So there are no less than 19 mountains called Geal Charn (White Hill) in Scotland, I choose the one in the Monadhliath.

I parked at Garva Bridge, west of Laggan, this brings back memories as it was the overnight camp in the 2013 Highlander, and Laggan being the finish.

My objective for the morning is a quick blast up this Munro, although my legs have no quick blast in them. It's hard work but again the weather is mostly kind, but hardly summery.

I'm up and down in 3 hours, get myself sorted and then head home; a great trip.

Ben Rinnes, Duffown Highland Games - Saturday 29th July 2017

My second of the Scottish Long Championship races and  hopefully will be my first completion ! Up and away early and a very enjoyable drive into the heart of whisky country - almost don't make it as distracted by both the Walkers Shortbread factory and numerous single malt distilleries.

But one in Dufftown, and having spent an age finding the Games field, I register and emerge myself into the spirit of the Games. The race, 22.6km / 1,500m. But secretly I have been working extra hard at circuits in the hope that I could take part and perhaps win the tossing the caber.....but pre-entry only......gutted but given the size of the other tossers (can I say that ?), that may not be a bad thing, think I'll stick to fell running, still get thrashed by my components, but just a little less so.

The race, well that was tough, think I had underestimated and overlooked it being both a Long race, and a Scottish race, not a good combo.

But the sun shines as we group at the start line, although within in minutes of starting it's raining. But that's short-lived and the weather remains onside. It's an out and back route, up and over two wee hills and regents for the main course a climb to the summit of Ben Rinnes at 840m.

That climb is tough but I quite enjoy the climbs on the way back, albeit they seem to have grown within the space of a couple of hours. I was hoping and aiming for sub 3 hours and even at the last summit it's far from clear to me if that's achievable. And the run back from there goes on forever, but I think I do it. Results to follow.

It the same it time to carry on enjoying the games and the highlight of the bands beating to retreat through the Main Street, love the pipes, so emotive. A top day out, but shame no one to share it with.

Heading North, and a couple of wee munros - Friday 28th July 2017

Up and away early, heading to Dufftown Highland Games, but that's not until tomorrow so time to bag a few new (second time around) munros.

Carb na Caim (941m) and A'Bhuidheanach Beag (936m) from a high starting point just north of Drumochter Pass in the A9. It's a bit breezy and a bit showery, but otherwise ok. It's a T shape walk, up to the Bealach, out and back and then out and back, back down at camper in 4 hours.

Then just 10 mins further up the A9 to my campsite for the next two nights.

Swim - Thursday 27th July 2017

25 lengths and then to Windermere to meet Bryn.....pre his big race !

Helm - Wednesday 26th July 2017

Head up to the Helm, not wishing to overdo it I run with Chris S on Billy's FRA race route - get torn to shreds by brambles, but otherwise a good run.

Tuesday 25 July 2017

Circuits & Pilates - Tuesday 25th July 2017

A tough session at circuits and then a slightly more relaxing Pilates session this evening.

Monday 24 July 2017

Training - Monday 24th July 2017

I head to the track for a 16 rep session; worked hard and ran ok, thanks Shaun.

Sunday 23 July 2017

Steady bike ride - Sunday 23rd July 2017

Head out from home; Burneside, Staveley, Kentmere, Staveley, Bowston, Burneside and home.

34.8km / 438m.

Carrie's BG - Saturday 22nd July 2017

After a 04:30 text update I struggle to sleep and head back up to Honister. After some breakfast I set off to Wasdale at 06:00am. It's clear, dry and calm; it's a very enjoyable walk / steady run into Wasdale; I time my arrival well, it's just as Emma, Carrie's road support, arrives - so I'm soon tucking into my second breakfast, thank you Emma.

It's been a rough night and no surprise that she's running a bit behind schedule. But with Craig keeping her company in leg 3, I know she's in safe hands (but what's rock climbing on Bowfell all about ?!!).

But she's in good shape and after a quick change and some food we head off in the heavy rain. Yewbarrow is a tough climb, but she does well and close to schedule on that section. We're then onto Red Pike, the weather starts to improve and the low cloud comes and goes. Then to Steeple, the hard climb to Pillar and the long descent to Black Sail Pass.

We are running behind and despite making good progress up Red Gully it is an agonising slow plod to the summit of Kirk Fell. Then some steady running before dropping steeply to Beck Head and the brutal climb to Gable; I'm aware the pace is slower than it needs to be, but it's hard to pick it up.

But once at the top we are joined by some of Carrie's friends, they are full of energy and help her to pick the pace up. Then to Green Gable, Bandreth and Grey Knotts; then down to Honister, the fu ish for me but no excuse for Carrie to stop; she runs straight through, totally focussed. And that's exactly what was needed, she goes on the run leg 5 in 2:38 and completes her Round in 23:38......welcome to the Club.

Heading to Keswick - Friday 21st July 2017

So it's Carrie's BG, I head up to Keswick, which in itself is not without incident, to see her set off. It's not a good forecast, but she's tough.

I then head up to Honister, it's wild - wet and windy and frustratingly no mobile signal, this worries me as I need to keep comms in case she is ahead or behind schedule, I have a long run in and don't want to be too early or late ! So I retreat to less wild weather and 3G signal at Seatoller.

Wednesday 19 July 2017

Swim - Wednesday 19th June 2017

Lesson learnt, the pool is too busy early evenings.

Pilates & Ride - Tuesday 18th June 2017

Head to Pilates, first session for a couple of weeks - good to be back.

Then a mad dash, as always, to meet KA for a ride from Natland; out to Viver, Heversham, Leasgill,  Hincaster, Strickland, Levens, Brigsteer, Prizet & back to Natland. 26.9km & 476m climb.

Monday 17 July 2017

Training - Monday 17th July 2017

Not feeling it today so decide training in a group might be the best thing. Hoka's are required today, Achilles is bust; 5 long steady laps as a warm-up, drop-in on about 8 reps, and then 2 steady laps to finish. Hot too.

Sunday 16 July 2017

Fairfield Horseshoe - Sunday 16th July 2017

A beautiful day, I head over to Rydal for a steady run around Fairfield Horseshoe. My Achilles is painful and my whole body feel stiff and bust, hard going from start to finish but still glad I made the effort.

Ingleborough Fell Race - Saturday 15th July 2017

A wet day, KA and I head over to Ingleton for the Ingleborough Fell race, we've done this race once before.

We run together, and run well. The weather is grim, but steadily improves; we get a good descent line from the summit which misses out all of the rocky sections and finish strongly. KA is 2nd Lady and 1st Lady V50.

Swim - Friday 14th July 2017

The usual Friday lunchtime 25 lengths; almost beginning to enjoy this.

Circuits and Run - Thursday 13th July 2017

A tough circuits session at lunchtime and then a steady run from Staveley to Potter Tarn in the evening; legs still not fully recovered.

London - Monday 10th to Wednesday 12th July 2017

Three tough days in the big smoke, with just a 30 minute gym session somewhere in the middle of that. Legs and body still trashed from Wasdale !

Ride - Sunday 9th July 2017

My whole body feels bust, but I manage a ride, and a tough one at that.

From home, over to Brigsteer, Levens, Brigsteer, Underbarrow and then the killer climb back to Kendal.

27.5km / 525m ascent.

Wasdale Fell Race - Saturday 8th July 2017

Again near perfect running weather. It's going to be a tough day but I'm actually looking forward to this. I set off steady, we contour Illgill Head, which I didn't do in my recce, and then to Whin Rigg; I'm well inside the cutoff, but it will be tight for some. Then we all take a bad line lower in the descent, I didn't do that on my recce. But across the valley is clear; I run, on and off, with my mate Paul, Jacko, Jackson, it's good to catch up with him.

It's also good to see CS at Greendale, all support is welcome. I climb Seatallan well and follow the obvious trod and line of traffic to the col between Red Pike and Scoat Fell, a much better route. Then on to Pillar and again see CS, this time close to Black Sail Pass. The traverse of Kirk Fell is easier than I recall from my recce but the climb up Gable is brutal. But I get a better descent route, much more runnable and then feel strong on the long drag to Esk Hause, helped by more Helm supporters.

I run well over to Scafell Pike but struggle on the rocky descent to the col, but then pick it up on the grassy descent to the finish. But what a tough race, 21 miles and just over 9,000' of ascent and, more painfully, descent !

I finish in 5:30, 16 minutes quicker than my previous time in 2008; I'm happy with that.

Swim - Friday 7th July 2017

25 lengths at lunchtime and then head over to Wasdale after work, the big race tomorrow !

Circuits & Hoad Hill Fell Race - Thursday 6th July 2017

Circuits at lunch and the to Ulverston for the Hoad Hill Fell race in the evening. Perhaps the shortest race I have ever done, about 1.7 miles; I am 1st V40 and win a pineapple !

Hoka run - Wednesday 5th July 2017

Achilles still not great, so have a run with KA along the river and back along the canal - ideal Hoka running terrain.

London, again - Tuesday 4th July 2017

This time it's all work and no play.

London - Monday 3rd July 2017

A long day in London,  but I manage 30 minutes in the hotel gym - that's never much fun.

Saunder Mountain Marathon - Saturday 1st & Sunday 2nd July 2017

For a third year running Craig and I are in the Bowfell class of the Saunders. This year it takes us to the North West fells, starting close to Ennerdale.

Conditions are near perfect and we head up towards Crag Fell and Whoap for our first control. It's then towards Haycock and a contour down and around Steeple before descending into the hot Ennerdale valley. After a km or two, we are back to climbing, this time to a control between Scarth Gap and High Pike. It's then the brutal climb up High Pike before dropping to Bleaberry Tarn and a control on Dodd.

Still a way to go, we traverse Starling Dodd and after dropping down and then climbing back out we drop to the boggy area south west of Mellbreak and a control on the north ridge of Hen Comb. It's short a short, fast descent to the overnight camp, close to the Kirkstile Inn.

Unfortunately the forecast drizzle arrives which makes for an unpleasant few hours at camp; however, spirits are lifted by our being 7th.

Day 2 takes us along the edge of Crummock Water before a brutal climb to the summit of Mellbreak. It's then a long way out west and then a lot of to'ing and fro'ing before a sting in the tail last climb and rapid descent to the finish (we are the quickest Bowfell runners on the penultimate leg). We are 9th on day 2 but retail our 7th overall; I'm pleased with that, a cracking weekend, thanks Craig.

Swim - Friday 30th June 2017

25 lengths at lunchtime, a leg loosener ahead of the Saunders.

New car, Circuits & Pilates - Thursday 29th June 2017

Having been carless for a month or so, the new one arrives today.....GLC AMG Line, very nice.

Then it's a mad dash to circuits, which is tough, as always and Pilates in the evening.

Helm training - Wednesday 28th June 2017

Not been here for a while; a tough session and my body not wanting to play tonight.

Liverpool - Tuesday 27th June 2017

All work and no play.

Wasdale Recce Part 2 - Monday 26th June 2017

A day off and I am back in Wasdale with KA. We ride from the National Trust car park to Greendale, stash bikes, and then set off up Seatallan. It's a glorious day, not too hot, near perfect running conditions. Then down into Pots of Ashes and the incorrect route, as shown on my face map !!, to point 704m, between Haycock and Scoat Fell.

Then a traverse of Black Crag and the short steep climb to Pillar, always a great summit to be on. A good descent on grassy lines to Black Sail Pass and then the traverse below Kirk Fell, this was hard work. The climb up Gable is even tougher and then down to Styhead. Time and energy are against us, so we decide on the Corridor Route to take us to the col between Scafell Pike and Lingmell.

Then it's just the killer descent down the nose of Lingmell to the finish. We grab a quick shower and then head to pub in Nether Wasdale for some much needed bait. A good day out.

Wasdale Recce Part 1 - Sunday 25th June 2017

I head over to Wasdale for part 1 of my race route recce. From the National Trust car park I head up on to Illgill Head and then to CP1 on Whinn Rigg, a good line takes me down into the valley and then a bad line takes me to Greendale; I backtrack on the correct route so that it is clear in my mind....a silly error, not sure how I managed that.

Then, on my earlier stashed bike, it's a quick dash back to camper.

Saturday 24 June 2017

Ride & Kirkby Moor BOFRA Race - Saturday 24th June 2017

I head out early on bike; from home, Brigsteer, Levens, Underbarrow, Crook, Staveley, coffe & porridge, Bowston, Burneside & home. 36.3km / 516m climb.....chilly !

Then I head to a BOFRA race, never done one of those before ! At Kirkby Moor, where I am use to running in the clag on the longer FRA race. It's a cracking wee race, small crowd and friendly too, this might catch on. Did ok.

London - Friday 23rd June 2017

All work and no play today.

Thursday 22 June 2017

Circuits & Pilates - Thursday 22nd June 2017

A very intense 1 hour, 1-21 circuit session at lunch - I comeWay a broken man; and then to kick me while I'm down, I then go to an excellent but very hard Pilates session in the evening....phew !

Wednesday 21 June 2017

Ride - Wednesday 21st June 201

An event on at work this evening but I manage to fit in a quick ride late afternoon. From the office, through Heversham, Milnthorpe, Dallam Park, Storth, Arnside, Sandside and back along the estuary.

Despite the heat I work hard.

22.9km / 221m climb / average speed 26.5 kph / max speed 53.3 kph.

Swim - Tuesday 20th June 2017

25 lengths at lunchtime.

Cunswick Scar - Monday 19th June 2017

Juts out for a walk on Cunswick Scar this evening; still giving my Achilles a rest from running

Cycle touring on Arran - Saturday & Sunday 17th & 18th June 2017

A late decision to get away for the weekend; I head off at 5:30am, a good journey to Ardrossan and I arrive I plenty of time to get my ticket, park camper and load up bike. It's only a short sailing to Brodick and then I'm off.....just me and my bike.

It's a long drag out of the main town but then soon some downhill to Lamlash. Then the real climb begins, over The Ross Road, reaching a height of about 300m. Some rough tarmac spoils the descent but I'm soon in Sliddery and heading North to Blackwaterfoot. Here I find a great wee Bakehouse, perfect for a late morning coffee and pastry.

A slight change of plan takes me back over to Brodick, via The String Road, this roughly cuts across the middle of the island.  Back in Brodick I stop for a much needed ice cream and then it's North along the coast road; first to Corrie, then Sannox and over yet another pass, Boguillie, to Lochranza; I came here, a great campsite and nearby hotel for some good food.

Day 1: 68.1km / 1,107m ascent / average speed 16.4 kph / max speed 68.4 kph.

After a hot and humid night I am up and away early. I head down the west side of the island, first through Pirnhill, then Machrie and again into Blackwaterfoot. I continue on the coast road, it becomes hilly, some short, sharp climbs with a welcome coffee and cake stop at the Velo Cafe in Lagg; here the bulk of the triathlon passes through.

Then again around the coast, to Whiting Bay and an early lunch stop at Lamlash. Then it's just the short up and over to Brodick and the ferry home.

Day 2: 74.1km / 964m ascent / average soled 21 kph / max speed 55.1 kph.

What a great wee adventure.

Wednesday 14 June 2017

Arnside Ride - Wednesday 14th June 2017

Trying to rest my Achilles, but that's a hard task for me to complete. But tonight I head out for a ride, from Prizet to Arnside and back, via usual route and via scampi & chips at Arnside chippie 😋

London - Tuesday 13th June 2017

A long day in the City, no time for play.

Monday 12 June 2017

River Walk - Monday 12th June 2017

Recovery walk along the river this evening, very pleasant.

Howtown Fell Race - Sunday 11th June 2017

Bizarrely I get sunburnt in Langdale Fell Race last year....in mid-October, then today, mid-June, I'm close the freezin my n@&!s off !! It's a windy, at times wet and cool day. Actually reminded me a bit of the first time I ran this race, although was a seriously wet and windy day.

Anyway enough of my moaning, so my third time I run this race, it really is a cracker; low-key, cheap and fantastic cakes.....happy days.

It's a tough first climb to Loadpot Hill and apart from the constant pain in my Achilles I feel strong and enjoy the tough conditions. We really are battling into the wind on our way to CP 2 on High Raise, it's good to see the checkpoint back where it should be ! I save the day by locating a certain persons headband and then navigate careful to drop onto the main path just east of The Knott.

It's then familiar running all the way to Boredale Hause, mainly with the wind behind us. A good time for a gel, then it's the steep climb to Place Fell, CP 3. Then great grassy downhill running to Garth Heads, a bit of road and then the sting, Hallin Fell; but actually that passes easily and just a great downhill to the finish.

We do ok, it was tough conditions and we finish in good shape. Tea and cake do down a treat, as does the all day breakfast at a cafe in Pooley Bridge.

Longsleddale Ride - Saturday 10th June 2017

A wet, no very wet morning and afternoon; but later on it brightens, as forecast, and I head out from home on bike. To Sadgill and back, 33.4km / 399m climb.

Thursday 8 June 2017

Run & Ride - Thursday 8th June 2017

Head out at lunchtime for a run on the Scar, with a 4 legged companion for company. A good run, 5.8 miles and manage to dodge the rain.

Then after work head out on bike, again I avoid the rain. A reverse of last week's ride, and despite the same amount of climb, this way round is definitely a bit easier - albeit I'm slower tonight, very cautious on descents as road are wet and slippery.

Training - Wednesday 7th June 2017

Not been to training for a few weeks and it hasn't gone unnoticed, despite it being because of illness, injury or mid-week racing !

Anyway I train well.

Tuesday 6 June 2017

Pilates - Tuesday 6th June 2017

Pilates for me tonight, a good session.

Training - Monday 5th June 2017

I head along to track raining in the rain; but it in my terms......5 or 6 long warm-up laps, then drop in for 8 reps and finish with some more long reps.

Sunday 4 June 2017

Kentmere Ride - Sunday 4th June 2017

A dry, bright and breezy afternoon; I head out from home on bike, Burneside, Potter Fell Road, Barley Bridge, Kentmere, Green Quarter, Staveley, Bowston, Burneside and home; just over 20 miles.

Saturday 3 June 2017

Duddon Short Fell Race - Saturday 3rd June 2017

Having been planning to run this race for a while and manage to persuade KA to join me.  It's another hot day and the Duddon Valley is a good place to be in days like this. The Long race set-offs at 11am, and we are away soon after.

Having recce'd the route last month there is little need for map reading, especially in weather like this. It's a rough track out and then a tough but short climb to the first checkpoint. From there a huge contour, with some up and some down, to the next two checkpoints and then it's a steep pull up to the checkpoint at Dow Crag. From there good running to cross the Walna Scar Road and then out to White Maiden and through the hinterland to the summit of Caw; again easy in these dry and cleat conditions. A great descent from there to the finish, about 2:13. Tea, then fizz and burger tastes good.

A good day.

River / Canal Run - 2nd June 2017

I head out at lunch for a mid-length loop of the river and canal; Achilles still not great :-(

Thursday 1 June 2017

Swim & Ride - Thursday 1st June 2017

25 lengths in the pool at lunch and then a ride from home in the evening; over to Brigsteer, Levens, Underbarrow and then a monster climb to get me back up and over to Kendal.

Scar Run - Wednesday 31st May 2017

I meet KA for a run on the Scar; 6 miles and a varied route, along to Helsington Church and a loop towards Brigsteer Woods and Sizergh; a glorious evening.

Helm Run - Tuesday 30th May 2017

I meet KA for a steady run on the Helm.

Heading home - Monday 29th May 2017

A lie in would have been nice, but I'm away soon after 7 as I do not want a repeat of the bad journey I had Saturday. I'm home by lunchtime and then achieve very little.

Ramsay Round support - Sunday 28th May 2017

So it was a late night, as we all stayed up to see Jim and Matt set off from the Glen Nevis Youth Hostel.  I'm up and out by 5:30am, with a scheduled 5:45 set off. We head to Fersit, Michelle, Jim and Mark, really top people and good to be with.

Jim and Matt are behind schedule, we wait anxiously by the Dam doing our best to find some breeze and away from those flippin midges. The guys come in about an hour behind schedule, they had a really rough night - next to no vis, and wet rocks. Dan Dux did a fantastic job navigating and we need to get going, give them a lift and gradually claw back some time; they're on a 24 hour schedule so no leeway whatsoever.

It's misty as we head up Stob Coire Sgriodain, we make good time knocking some time off schedule; Mark navigates brilliantly and gets us to Chno Dearg; Jim is struggling with food, but I suspect his choice of Scotch Egg is not ideal. But we again make up some time and are soon descending to Allt-na-h-Ealaidh. The weather is clearing and we refill bottles from the burn.

The climb up Beinn na Lap is steep and the pace relentless, the it's are in fire. We soon knock off this summit and then it's down to railway line and track, followed by a lot of trail running to the change over point at Loch Eilde Mor.

The first part is fast, the second part can be horrendous but the ground is so dry we make excellent progress. We cut the corner before Meanach Bothy and then it's just a few km on good track. We arrive with the guys in good shape and now just 35 mins down. Once in their way, we enjoy a welcome brew and then it's an 8km slog out to Kinlochleven. We are tired and thirsty and have a few logistical issues trying to locate the van that the leg 3 boys had parked. We eventually find it and head back to Glen Nevis for much needed food, drink and showers.

It's exciting following the guys as they have frackers, it's clear they are not only back on schedule but now ripping it up. At 23:10'ish they finish, what an achievement.....awesome, well done guys, great to be a part of your Rounds.

Ride and then long drive North - Saturday 27th May 2017

Up and out early, two reasons why this is: 1st it's gonna be another hot day with thunderstorms rolling in and 2. Because I'm heading North to Fort William to support Jim, and Matt, on their Ramsay Rounds.

Just a short loop, to Burneside, Potter Fell Road, breakfast in Staveley and back through Bowston and Burnesside. Then quick change and pack, and then a long and slow drive North....but no thunderstorms for us :-)

Friday 26 May 2017

Swim - Friday 26th May 2017

Another hot day, I head for a swim at lunchtime - 25 lengths in a cool pool is refreshing.

Thursday 25 May 2017

Circuits & Walk on Helm - Thursday 25th May 2017

Not been to circuits for a few weeks so a tough session, I start leaking very early on and don't stop - it's a hot day.

Then a walk on Helm to catch-up with my wee fella - that's always good for the soul.

Wednesday 24 May 2017

Fairfield Horseshoe - Wednesday 24th May 2017

A glorious day and I'm in need of getting both some miles and some climb in my legs. I head over to Rydal after work and have a pleasant and uneventful run around the Horseshoe. Hard work on the climb, mainly because of the heat but higher up much better. Exactly 10 miles and about 2hrs 15.....I'll settle for that.

Tuesday 23 May 2017

Pilates - Tuesday 23rd May 2017

Yet another early start and more driving; but Pilates after work is relaxing.

Ride - Monday 22nd May 2017

An early start and more driving; manage to get out early evening for a ride around the Lyth Valley; just over 16 miles and feel ok.

Glenashdale Falls - Sunday 21st May 2017

Still on Arran and had hoped to ride but the weather not on side this morning so we settle for a short loop from Whitling Bay to Glenashdale Falls, very spectacular. Then it's a general potter and stop off at Lamlash to watch the Scottish Islands Peaks Race pass through......madeness, how did I ever manage that :-/

Then late afternoon ferry and drive home.....a cracking weekend.

Goat Fell Hill Race - Saturday 20th May 2017

A leisurely start, the race is not until 12pm and it's only a short drive back up to Brodick. There's a few spots of rain, but up the coast at Whitling Bay and Lamlash there had obviously been a deluge. Brodick is dry though, we are easily parked at Ormidale Hall and soon registered.

We even manage a bit of a warm-up before the race and as the start approaches the cloud lifts from the summit of Goat Fell. The race starts with about a mile of road, then a bit less on the Tarmac drive leading to Brodick Castle; then it's up through the woods on a clear path and out on to the open fell. It's gets rough higher up, large granite boulders to scramble over and around, Arran is right in the fault line which cuts across Scotland diagonally and marks the start of the Highlands.

There are great views from the summit and a certain person even finds time for a headstand...really, we should be cracking on ! Then it's full on concentration for the descent, I feel good, despite all my niggles and pains, and feel strong on the road; I pull ahead hoping that KA will keep with me, I've looked at my watch and think sub 2 hours is achievable......and is and it was :-)

The races started with and finished with an unnecessary lap of the sports field and we run well and are pleased with our times.

Results

The craic after the race is good, plenty of tea and cakes, plus a lack of expected shower ! What a great race and great day, later head back to campsite and out for a well deserved dinner.

Heading North (& Overseas) - Friday 19th May 2017

I've been looking forward to this trip for a while, Arran and Goat Fell Hill Race awaits. It's a glorious day and pleasant drive to Ardrossan, then a short ferry trip to Brodick and a drive to a spectacular campsite, Seal Shore, on the Southern part of the island.

Running Circuits - Thursday 18th May 2017

The last session in this block, a pleasant evening on the Green but all of those issues listed yesterday still apply :-(

Latrigg Fell Race - Wednesday 17th May 2017

KA and I head up to Keswick for Keswick AC's Latrigg fell race. Did this last year and had a reasonable run, but everything hurts tonight after Monday's track session !

Well all goes well for the first few hundred metres and then as if shot in the back of the leg my hamstring goes and my leg buckles......but, hey, can't let that spoil a race, even if I do have an overseas race on Saturday !!

I push on, it hurts but for once I man-up and take it in my stride. Well I finish almost a minute quicker than last year, I'm happy with that. But after the race: hamstring is knackered / feel another hernia / Achilles stiff as a block / lower back in agony / huge blister forming......and all of that applies, no delete as applicable with this list !!

But apart from all of this, it was an enjoyable evening, the sun was shining, Helm ladies run well, the Guiness tastes good, the scampi chips and curry sauce taste even better and the coffee at the Square Orange was a pleasant way to round off the evening :-)

Monday 15 May 2017

Swim & Track training - Monday 15th May 2017

25 lengths at lunch and then a not so wet as I thought track session in the evening; 200m's get the better of me, need to get my fitness back before I attempt those - too much for my poor hamstrings to handle.

Sunday 14 May 2017

Potter Tarn & Potter Fell - Sunday 14th May 2017

Head out mid-afternoon with KA for a run from Staveley. Along river, up to Potter Tarn and then on to Potter Fell. Then back to Wilfs for a refreshing glass of fizz.

Saturday 13 May 2017

Run & Ride - Saturday 13th May 2017

Very disappointing to not be heading to Scotland today, but for more than one reason it wasn't to be. I head over to Staveley in the morning for a steady run around the Reston Scar Scamper race route, followed by a delicious brunch in More.

Then mid-afternoon my usual Longsleddale ride, the weather has cleared and it's a reasonable afternoon. The bluebells are amazing.

Howgill Run - Friday 12th May 2017

I take the afternoon off, a bit of a test to see if I'm up to running. Head over to Sedbergh with KA, we recce a route, 10 miles, including a long climb to the Calf, Arrant How and Winder - I feel ok, this is good progress.

Circuits - Thursday 11th May 2017

Definitely on the mend, make it to circuits on the Green, but I take it steady.

Scar walk - Wednesday 10th May 2017

The pain has gone but don't feel great; I settle for a steady walk on the Scar, a glorious evening.

Not a good day - Tuesday 9th May 2017

Doubled over in pain and diagnosed with kidney infection, stronger antibiotics required; I spend the afternoon in bed.....not good.

Pilates & Yoga - Monday 8th May 2017

Early morning yoga session, a good way to start the day. Then an evening circuit session in Ambleside, but annoyingly my bladder infections deteriates and is soon to be a kidney infection.

Monday 8 May 2017

Storth Ride - Sunday 7th May 2017

Head out in bike late afternoon; from Natland to Viver, Milnthorpe, Dallam Park, Storth, Sandside, Heversham, Hincaster, Sedgwick and back to Natland; just under 20 miles; the new bike rides well.

Stuc A'chroin 5000 - Saturday 6th May 2017

A glorious day in Scotland but my bladder infection prevents me from completing race, it just wouldn't have been sensible; very frustrating.

Heading North - Friday 5th May 2017

Head north in camper to Killin, overnight stop ahead of tomorrow's race.

Circuits x 2 - Thursday 4th May 2017

Circuits at lunchtime and then again in the evening, but each working different areas.

Training - Wednesday 3rd May 2017

First time back on the Helm for me this year. It's hard work and I don't feel great.

Tuesday 2 May 2017

Work - Tuesday 2nd May 2017

A long day in Liverpool, another day where it's all work and no play :-(

Mountain biking - Monday 1st May 2017

I head over to Brathay and from there on bike to High Top and pick up the Green trail around Grizedale Forest., stopping enroute at the cafe for coffee and toast. Then it's back down to Brathay and head home, via More for lunch.

Training Run - Sunday 30th April 2017

KA and I head to the car park at the foot of the Walna Scar; it's another cracking day, bit breezy on the tops but ideal running conditions.

We run to the top of Walna Scar and then head West to White Pike then to Caw. Then descend to Newfield Inn and from work our way back across below Caw and White Pike, across Walna Scar and then below Brown Pike and Dow Crag, picking up various quarries and wall corners on the way. From the last point a steep climb to Dow Crag and then west romWalna Scar and back to Cali; oh and then an extra mile or so to bring it up to 16, or was it 15, miles. Then some late lunch in Coniston, a good day out.

Coniston Fell Race - Saturday 29th April 2017

I have raced this twice before, one of those occasions being quite well. Not expecting too much today, but have definitely manage to stem the decline and conditions are ideal. But, as usual, the initial climb takes it out of me and I struggle all the way to Wetherlam; not helped by the anti-chaff cream on my feet making my sock slip off my foot and into the my shoe.......and that's made worse by my tieing my shoe lace extra tight as it had come undone at Lords Seat.....oh well, I'm sure that added at least 15 minutes to my time ! :-)

Anyway enough excuses, I run well from Wetherlam, climb Prison Band ok and feel good to the Old Man. I almost get the perfect line from the summit but not quite, but then the fast lines lower down. All in all, not a bad race and enjoyed......well most of it anyway.

Ride to work - Friday 28th April 2017

Car needs to go to tyre fitters so I manage to get four, unnecessarily large, wheels and my bike in the back of my car; then it's a short 7 mile ride to work; that's all I manage today.

Banff Mountain Festival - Thursday 27th April 2017

I have meetings in the North Lakes and had hoped for a short run before seeing the 'best of' the Banff Mountain Festival films, but time escapes me....but the films are inspiring.

Circuits & Lords Seat Fell Race - Wednesday 26th April 2017

Another tough 'upper body' circuit session at lunch and the to Lord's Seat Fell race with KA after work. Conditions are again good and the ground dry. We both run well and are pleased with our results. A cracking race, great route and good atmosphere.

London - Tuesday 25th April 2017

A long day in London, all work and no play today.

Circuits - Monday 24th April 2017

I head over to Ambleside early evening for another circuit class. The sky gets darker as I approach and then just as the one hour session starts, so does a one hour hail shower. The temperature drops from 8c to 1c during that time too, but a good session, albeit cold hands.

Sunday 23 April 2017

Yarlside Downhill & Lyth Valley Ride - Sunday 23rd April 2017

I help Russ at his Yarlside Downhill race, 24 runners, a good turnout. My legs are tired and although I do not compete, I do ascend and descend the hill twice.

Then soon after getting home I head over to Natland for a ride around the Lyth Valley.

Anniversary Waltz - Saturday 22nd April 2017

One of my favourite races and a glorious day. I run ok, quicker than last time but a long way off my PB, but that's still progress.

Rest day - Friday 21st April 2017

A much needed rest day; just a steady dog walk in the evening.

Circuits - Loughrigg - Circuits - Thursday 20th April 2017

A very tough one-to-one circuit session at lunch. Then a steady run towards Loughrigg, finished off with another circuit session on Kendal Green; a tough day.

Loughrigg Fell Race - Wednesday 19th April 2017

A big field and I run ok, but the evening is marred by a very sad incident.

Training session - Tuesday 18th April 2017

Meet with KA for a structured training session around Elterwater; a steady warm-up, then sets of sprints and recovery; hard work but soon recovered, a good session.

Monday 17 April 2017

Anniversary Waltz Recce - Easter Monday 17th April 2017

Six of us, Craig, Amanda, Karl, Marcia, Kath and I, head to Stair for a recce of next week's AW race. Sunny to start but cooler on the tops, vis good too so no problems getting the race lines. A good morning out, with good company.

Sadgill Ride - Easter Sunday 16th April 2017

A cold and wet day; eventually I head out on bike, usual route to Sadgill and back; dry there, wet on the way back. Bump into Rick & Ali so have some company for a short way.

Saturday 15 April 2017

Loughrigg and some of Silver Howe - Saturday 15th May 2017

I head out earlier today and park at Brathay. Head up to Lilly Tarn, Loughrigg and towards Silver Howe; come back via Loughrigg Tarn and Lilly Tarn; close to 10 miles, felt good and enjoyed being out.

Coniston Fell Race Recce - Good Friday 14th April 2017

The day starts wet and cloudy, but soon improves. I head over to Coniston and recce the race route. The cloud lifts on Wetherlam and stays clear, but cold and windy.

However, as I descend, very directly, from the Old Man the sun comes out and I'm sheltered from the wind; I get some good lines but am overheating....phew !

Then into the village and I try out a new wee Artisan bakery.....very impressed.

River / canal run & Circuits - Thursday 13th April 2017

So I'm home and head back to work; but head out at lunchtime for a run along the river and back along the canal. And then in the evening I head to a new session of circuits in Kendal Green, aimed at runners - a good session.

Meall Chuaich - Wednesday 12th April 2017

This Munro, at 951m, is just to the East of the A9, not far from Dalwhinnie. It's a fairly easy walk, along a service track to a wee power station and then soon after on to the climb to the ridge and summit. It's a another cold day, very windy and wintry showers again too.

It's a fairly quick outing and I decide to head home; I've lost the battle with the elements ! Just 2 Munros climbed and one Corbett, and no chance of my walking the first part of the CWT.

Bynack More - Tuesday 11th April 2017

I stayed the night at Glenmore, great location, excellent showers but very expensive. I head down to Glenmore Lodge and park there, ready to tackle the 50mph winds which are forecast on the summits.

It's a long walk in, towards Ryovan Pass but then before the Bothy head east to Bynack Stable and the climb to the summit. It's very windy, a Scottish lass who had set off before me was heading back, she had turned around as she was uncomfortable in the conditions. I pushed on, actually I don't think it got a lot worse, to the summit at 1090m; the 54th highest Munro.

I don't stop long on the summit, quickly head back the same way; I catch up with the friendly Scottish lass, she was disappointed to have not made the summit, but I did say that sometimes you have to go with that inner feeling, and that's it's always there for another day.......I talk from experience, I have been there too.

Sgurr Mhic Bharraich - Monday 10th April 2017

A chilly start to the day; I device to climb a Corbett, Sgurr Mhic Bharraich, 779m. I head out from Shiel Bridge, along Gleann Undalain and then climb to Loch Coire Ann Crogachan. It's then a short and steel pull up to the summit, and limited views of the surrounding peaks. The weather could have been worse, but it was cold, breezy and some wintry showers for fun.

A quick descent, tea at camper and then decid to head East, via Fort William, in order to avoid tomorrow's forecast heavy rain.

Scotland - Sunday 9th April 2017

A long drive North, I am staying at Morvich. The weather is poor, wet and windy. I manage just an hours run, along a valley and back; a disappointing achievement.

Saturday 8 April 2017

Staveley Run - Saturday 8th April 2017

A beautiful day, but it doesn't go to plan which is a shame, but finishes on a better note.

I head back to Staveley late afternoon and have a run from Barley Bridge to Brunt Knott, Potter Fell and Potter Tarn, it really is glorious weather.

Then just as I get home the Grand National winner flashes on my phone news alert.....so it's back to the bookies to collect my winnings.......lucky in money, unlucky in love, as the saying goes :-(

The DOMS....and a swim - Friday 7th April 2017

It's even worse today, the DOMS have really set-in. And I spend too long sat in car and at a desk, I can barely walk today ! So after a trip to the bookies I head for an early evening swim, it helps ease my poor, poor quads.

Circuits and Run - Thursday 6th April 2017

Is was right, I'm in pain, quads are v.tender ! Fortunately Adam takes this into account at circuits and we focus on upper body and core, but no less tough.

Then after work and a run for Force Bridge; along the canal to the edge of town and then back along the river.....very enjoyable apart from the pain I'm in !!

Grisedale Grind - Wednesday 5th April 2017

Another new race, only 4km and 480m climb.......sound easy....hmm !!

KA and I head up to Whinlatter, it's a cool evening but dry and clear. A big field, 109, good for a mid-week race. Really not my sort of race, steep up and then steep, and nowt inbetween. After a initial dash on forest track we are out on open fell and an unrelenting climb to the summit. I'm ahead of friendly rival Sean Robinson at the summit, but only just and he's a cracking descender. He soon dashes past me and off into the distance, but I'm climbing ok, just need to improve downhill confidence and technique.

Anyway it's painful but soon over; I finish 50th in just over 34 mins. I know this descent is going to trash my legs and I'll suffer tomorrow.

Then into Braithwaite for a drink and dinner, a pleasant way to round off the evening.

Pilates - Tuesday 4th April 2017

Only time for pilates today.....a good session.

Scar Run - Monday 3rd April 2017

I again head to London on the 06:21, that's too early.

But back just after 6, so have time for a short run on the Scar, and make it round just before the rain starts. It's good to stretch my legs after a long day on the train and in the office, but it was hard going.

High Fells - Sunday 2nd April 2017

KA and I head to Honister, it's another glorious day. We head to Blackbeck Tarm to pick up the Ennerdale race route and then follow this to Green Gable, Kirkfell and Pillar. Conditions are ideal: warm in the sun, cool on the tops and the ground dry.

From Pillar we double back to Black Sail Pass and drop into the valley and stop for a cuppa at the hostel......now that was a good idea :-). Then climb to Scarth Gap and rejoin the race route, skirting Haystacks then to Innominate Tarn and down to Blackbeck Tarn, again. Then just a short up and down to Honister.

Great to be out.

Saturday 1 April 2017

Longsleddale Ride - Saturday 1st April 2017

So we are already a quarter of the way through the year and it's Aprils Fools day - so Montane are offering to deliver good by drone within a few minutes.....good one :-)

But on with the ride, it's a showery day, but it would be, it's April. Usual route out and back route to Sadgill. 32.6k / 287m ascent and a bit wet in places.

Friday 31 March 2017

Thursday 30 March 2017

Circuits & Scar Run - Thursday 30th March 2017

Well my secretary has now stopped saying "enjoy" when I head off to circuits.....I think she realises that it's not an enjoyable experience.....but, really, I love it; it's full on we push either hard, today was no exception.

Then only a couple of hours later, a wet and muddy 6.38 miles on the Scar.

Training - Wednesday 29th March 2017

Another wet night; I run to running and then head to the Castle for 6 longs reps and then a long run home......where's the good weather gone ?!

Tuesday 28 March 2017

Reston Scar Scamper Race Route - Tuesday 28th March 2017

I just miss out on the last of the good weather, some rain on my early evening run, but at least it's light now.

About 7km and 300m, a steady 50 min run, legs still tired from the weekend.

Sunday 26 March 2017

Ride & Scar Run - Sunday 26th March 2017

Another glorious day; legs a bit tight and tired from yesterday so I decide to head out on bike. Usual long loop: Brigsteer, Levens, Brigsteer, Underbarrow, Crook, Ings, Staveley......bacon roll and cuppa.....Burneside, home. A great day to be out. Wish I had the energy to be out running on the fells.

But then I manage a short run on the Scar late afternoon, good to get out.

Saturday 25 March 2017

Coniston 14 - Saturday 25th March 2017

So a road race for me today. The weather is fantastic and the fells look stunning; we head over to Coniston for an 11am start, it defo shorts and T weather today.

I have raced this once before, came 18th overall in a pretty good time; it won't be that good today but might not be a bad race.

I never manage to get pacing, I start at a good pace and aim to keep going until I slow ?! But I run ok, desperate for the 4 drink stops today. It's hard work though and my feet suffer, but I finish in 1:33:41, 52nd overall out of 1170 runners, I'll settle for that. A good day.

Friday 24 March 2017

Circuits - Friday 24th March 2017

A slightly easier session, Adam kindly takes into account that we are both racing tomorrow.

Pilates and run - Thursday 23rd March 2017

A good session at Pilates and then head straight out for a run; 20 minutes down the Kentmere valley and back, I'm spooked big time by a strange noise and then have to run past where I heard it on the return leg !!

Wednesday 22 March 2017

Monday 20 March 2017

Run & Circuits - Monday 20th March 2017

I head over to Sizergh Castle at lunchtime and run my 5km loop to Helsington.....twice. Good to be out, legs feel OK after yesterday's race.

Then after work I head to Circuits.....it's boxercise night, hard work but I manage.

Criffel Hill Race - Sunday 19th March 2017

KA and I head over the border to race Criffel. The rain on route is monsoon like and I wonder how we will run in this. But as we approach Dumfries and then New Abbey the rain eases and the sky clears, we are lucky it's dry for the race.

It's the first of the SHR Championship races so a good turn out, and only one other Helm runner....bliss ! But the whole race is a bog-fest, I have never known a race like it, I'm lucky that I didn't get swallowed up by one !

But it's a good route, out and back, a minor peak, Criffel, the minor peak and back to the village. Hard going but I quite enjoy and a good atmosphere. Just 10.5k and 550m climb, but it felt further.

Then into the tea room for much needed tuck before heading home.

Saturday 18 March 2017

Longsleddale & Staveley Ride - Saturday 18th March 2017

Up and out early, head from home to Sadgill on bike. Bump in to Paul Turner out on a run and we're heading to More, him on foot and me on bike - wonder who will be first ?

It turns wet and the roads are already wet, glad I'm on my safe and secure Genesis. I'm at More just before Paul, it's good to have a coffee & cake and catch-up with him.

Then it's home via Crook and Ratherheath. Just over 26 miles, a good ride.

Friday 17 March 2017

River / Canal Loop - Friday 17th March 2017

A wet day, I turn down the offer of a pint and a pie I favour of a run in the mud and the rain !

But actually I enjoy and I'm pleased I made the effort - even record it in Strava and get lots of Kudos and comments....not that it was particularly impressive.

Wednesday 15 March 2017

Training - Wednesday 15th March 2017

Another very structured and very tough session.

Circuits & Pilates - Tuesday 14th March 2017

Well again I'm close to being broken......but I'm really enjoying circuits, must be mad !

Then to Pilates in the evening, a very good session.

Monday 13 March 2017

Training - Monday 13th March 2017

Give training a try tonight, 18 reps, hard work but glad I went.......and I got to wear my new "Bobby Dazzlers", wonder what Craig would have said about them ? :-)

Sunday 12 March 2017

Ride - Sunday 12th March 2017

Head out from home, it's dry and even a rare glimpse of a bright yellow thing in the sky, might that be the sun ?!

Head over to Brigsteer, Levens, Brigsteer, Underbarrow, Crook, Ings, Staveley, Burneside and home. 25.9 miles, 1,766' climb and coffee & Christmas cake on route !

Black Combe Fell Race - Saturday 11th March 2017

A damp and misty day, as it often is for this race; I'm pleased to have recced it earlier in the week. The fields to the fell are muddy, very muddy and it's a relief to get into the climb. It goes ok, I didn't take a perfect route and, perhaps, lost a few minutes in the process, but no major disasters like last year.

I finish in 1:40, I'll settle for that, for now.

Friday 10 March 2017

Thursday 9 March 2017

River / Canal Run - Thursday 9th March 2017

A glorious day, I head out at lunchtime for the usual river / canal loop.....very pleasant.

Wednesday 8 March 2017

Scars Training Sesion - Wednesday 8th March 2017

Head up to Cunswick and Scout Scars for a very structured 1 hour session - it went surprisingly quick; it went well, might do this one again some time.

Tuesday 7 March 2017

Black Combe Recce & Pilates - Tuesday 7th March 2017

A few demons to expel here ! A beautiful morning, I head to recce Black Combe Fell race. A good run out, easily pass and get right my previous glitch but actually think the last climb is the area with the most potential to go wrong, although I'm not sure anyone does here ?!

A good morning. Then a good Pilates class tonight; so I guess a good day all round.

Monday 6 March 2017

Swim - Monday 6th March 2016

Just a short swim in a crowded pool for me tonight.

Howgill Half - Sunday 5th March 2017

I had out early afternoon from Sedbergh with KA; we run the Montane Howgill Half Marathon route: Winder, Calders, The Calf, Cautley Spout, Cautley.....just in time to see the lead runners come through.......and then very muddy valley path back to Sedbergh. Felt good today.

Saturday 4 March 2017

Run & Ride - Saturday 4th March 2017

I head over to Grasmere and run the Coffin path to Rydal and back along Rydal Water and then Grasmere Water - followed by coffee and cake in the village.

Then after lunch I head out on bike from home; Brigsteer, Levens, Brigsteer, Underbarrow, Crook and Ratherheath....then home.

A dry and bright day, for a change.

Friday 3 March 2017

Circuits & River / Canal Run - Friday 3rd March 2017

I head at lunch for 1-2-1 circuit session; it comes close to breaking me !

Then after work, in the rain and the mud, I head out for a loop of the river/ canal loop, again.

Thursday 2 March 2017

River / Canal Run - Thursday 2nd March 2017

Not been this way for a while and certainly not after work in daylight. A good run around usual loop, buts it's still flippin muddy out there !

Swim and Training - Wednesday 1st March 2017

Head for a swim at lunch and the training in the evening. We do reps on the Castle, it's cold, wet and very muddy, hardly possible to get traction on the steep climb.....it's all hard work for me tonight.

Pilates - Tuesday 28th February 2017

Pilates class for me tonight, a good session.

Training - Monday 27th February 2017

I head to training, not done that for a while on a Monday. It's hard work but hopefully done some good.

Badger Bar Blast - Sunday 26th February 2017

It's another wet day and the ground is sodden; ideal conditions for a short fell race. The Badger Bar Blast replaces Loughrigg / Silverhowe and is, therefore, a new race for me.

Actually the weather wasn't too bad, certainly been out in much worse. But the ground was very wet, I struggle on the first climb, still tired from the Cumbria Way, but get going after that. I know the route well and although vis was good people still scatter. I stick to the lines I know and they pay off, I gain places on the way to Silverhowe and manage to hold on to them on the climb back to Loughrigg and the very slippy descent to the finish.

My result was just ok not great but also not a disaster.....that how my running and racing is these days.

Scar Run - Saturday 25th February 2017

It's a very wet day, this gives me the chance to relax at home and catch up on some things. But obviously I need a run so head up to Scar late afternoon with KA for a very wet and windy run.

Arthur's Seat - Friday 24th February 2017

No stay in Edinburgh is complete for me unless I manage a run up Arthur's Seat. My only opportunity on this trip is early morning and my body protests but I know if I don't, I'll regret it. So up and out by 7, summit at 7:30. It's icy at the top and the view amazing, photos will defo follow.

Back at the hotel by 8, showers breakfast and in the office by 9, very glad I made the effort.

Edinburgh - Thursday 23rd February 2017

It's a quick turn around and no time to rest, recover and take stock of my recent trip. I'm back on a train and heading to Edinburgh for a conference; a tiring day and no chance to stretch my legs.

Cumbria Way - Monday 20th - Wednesday 22nd February 2017

So an idea followed by a rough plan resulted in KA tackling the Cumbria Way over 3 days. Little prep or training had gone into this, but it was close to home and should weather or fitness dictate plenty of options to cut short.

This epic adventure started the way all should, breakfast.....toasted crumpets and tea in Booths, Ulverston, just a short way from the official start. A small monument marks the start and we are soon heading across very wet and muddy farmland, as was the case for the first few hours. The terrain then improved but the weather deteriated. Very wet and windy at Beacon Tarn but we are soon down to Coniston Water and some relevant some relative shelter, even a few patches of blue sky and sunshine.

Once in Coniston lunch was required, we headed to Meadowdore for beans on toast, this would either provide protein fuelled energy to get us through to Elterwater or, perhaps, some other form of propulsion ! So having had breakfast, then lunch a mid afternoon drink stop seemed to be in order.  Dry now but still the refuge of a cosy wee barn was very welcome. Only a couple of miles from here to the end of day one and some comfort at the Britannia Inn.

Day 2 started bright and after a filling breakfast we made a steady start down the Langdale Valley and then over Stake Pass. The weather turns here, wet and windy and it stays that way for the remainder of the day. Once down in the Langstrath Valley we pass Blackmoss Pot, but are not in the mood to jump in !, then out to Rosthwaite, lunch stop.

A short afternoon's run from there, familiar paths to Grange, then along the lake to Portinscale. BG route into Keswick and a quick zip into Booths to resupply; we are wet and cold so head straight to the guest house, a mile or so out of town, we only stop to wash the mud off our shoes and legs.....not sure we would have been let in otherwise !

Tea, shower, was and dry kit and then taxi into town for some great food and drink in the Square Orange, a favourite.

Day 3 is the long one,we had covered about 22 miles on the first, 18 on the second and we now had a 30 miler ! But it's dry and that helps. We pick up the old railway line which leads us back towards town, then it's the BG route to behind Latrigg. From there we break off East to Skiddaw House Hostel and then follow the Caldew East. Once we hit the Tarmac, it's a sharp right turn and a climb to Lingy Hut. It's cold up here and the very boggy ground is freezing. We seek refuge in the hut and are offered some coffee by a friend Wainwright bagged and his friend, very welcome....thank you.

We are then back out into the cold and push on to High Pike, the highest point of the trail. It's all downhill from there to Caldbeck and some very welcome soup and scone in a cafe. Less excitement from here to Carlisle, we follow the river, miss the diversion, follows lanes and back onto the trail. Plenty of muddy fields again and from Dalston it's a pen unpleasant Tarmac cycle way to the centre of Carlisle; the last 10 miles or so were not that inspiring but so be it.

Once in Carlisle we look out of place, the path finishes at the Visitor Centre, in the main pedestrian shopping area. We dive into Costa for tea and use their facilities to get changed. Then it's off to find food, a celebratory, and very delicious, burger and beer :-).

Then train home to Oxenholme and sadly back to reality......but a great trip.

Sunday 19 February 2017

Longsleddale Ride - Sunday 19th February 2017

A busy day and lots to get done, including a couple of hours work in the office. But I make it out on my bike for an hour or so, about 20 miles to Sadgill and back, out and back, along one of my favourite valleys.

GPS Training & Grasmere Run - Saturday 18th February 2017

If I enter a certain race I will need to know how to use a GPS, so I book myself on a course at Mungrisdale village hall. A good course.

Had intended to run from here straight after, but complication that I need to head back into Keswick for some shopping. Head back but manage to motivate myself for a run.....albeit in the dark and wet. Head out for Grasmere, along the Coffin trail to Rydal and then back around Rydal and Grasmere Waters. Out for about an hour and pleased that I made the effort.

London - Thursday 16th & Friday 17th February 2017

All work and no time to play. But at least I get to spend time in our new offices in Finsbury Circus, fantastic and great attention to detail. Will need to find some City run routes - Bryn will be my man for this.

Training - Wednesday 15th February 2017

Back to training, a good session on a steep hill close to the golf course. Thanks Bill.

Circuits & Pilates - Tuesday 14th February 2017

I overheard someone say it is Valentine's Day today - is it ?!

Head to circuits at lunch and Pilates in the evening - punishing and rewarding at the same time. Oh, and I get a Valentine's hug from Rebecca, at last my day has improved.

Rest day - 13th February 2017

Back to work today and a lot of catching up to do; feel tired in the evening so pass on a run.

I' m back, trail run from Skelwith Bridge - Sunday 12th February 2017

I was late home and even later to be once I had unpacked and got myself sorted. Up and ready early, could have had a lie-in but communication is not everyone's strong point.

Head out with KA, park at Skelwith and run to Elterwater, part way down Langdale and then up and over to Grasmere. Stop for hot chocolate, the back along the coffin trail to Ambleside and up and over to Skelwith. About 20k......you can tell I've been on the continent :-)

Lanzarote & Fuerteventura - Saturday 4th - Saturday 11th February 2017

So I head to warmer climes and some much needed peace. A great week road biking on Lanzarote and Fuerteventura: warm weather, smooth roads, considerate drivers, good company and plenty of coffee (leche leche's) and cake - livin the dream :-)

Strava shows it all in detail: some long tough days and high speed descents (and occasional not so high speed descents into a headwind !!), plenty of climb too.

Friday 3 February 2017

Circuits - Friday 3rd February 2017

Wowza, that was a tough session,  actually the toughest so far - I'm broken and need a holiday :-)

Thursday 2 February 2017

Scar Run - Thursday 2nd February 2017

Head to Scar with CS and each of us carry packs containing 5kg of sugar ! It proves a point, it's hard work and hardly surprising that my running has been so crap for so long, that's what I've been carrying excess on my body these last couple of years. Time to get serious !!

Swim and Training - Wednesday 1st February 2017

First time this year I get to the pool for a lunchtime swim.

Then in the evening to training; 8 hard reps towards golf course, a good session.

Pilates - Tuesday 31st January 2017

Feel a bit better, so head to Pilates for another good session.

Monday 30 January 2017

Cold - Sunday 29th & Monday 30th January 2017

And I don't just mean the weather, I can't believe that I have succumbed to yet another cold - am I just unlikely or am I doing something seriously wrong to keep getting colds ?!

Scar Run - Saturday 28th January 2016

I head up to Scar with KA, a steady and enjoyable 5 (or 6) miler.

Circuits - Friday 27th January 2017

Circuits at lunch today, another brutal session !

Pilates - Thursday 26th January 2017

Another good session.

Work - Tuesday 24th & Wednesday 25th January 2017

All work and no play.

Canal / River Run - Monday 23rd January 2017

I manage to get out late lunch for the usual route, albeit this time in reverse. Good to stretch the legs ahead of a long drive to Redditch !

Sunday 22 January 2017

Loughrigg - Sunday 22nd January 2017

Legs and lower back a little stiff from yesterday, so we head for a steady run over Loughrigg and back via Lilly Tarn. Then lunch at the Apple Pie shop :-). A cold and overcast day, made the right choice to be on the high fells yesterday.

Langdale Horseshoe - Saturday 21st January 2017

I join Clapham Chasers for the day ! Through a friend of a friend's daughter ! What a day to be out, stunning.......cold, bright and clear - the Lakes at its best.

KA, I and the Chasers head out from NDG, up to Stickle Tarn.....quick drone photo shoot !, Thunacar Knott, then Langdale race route as far as Angle Tarn. We then miss out the pointless out and back to Esk Hause and, instead, make a more direct climb to Bowfell. Then Three Tarns, Crinkles, via the walkers path and the amazing phenomenon of a Brocken Spectre on the way.....photos may follow.

Finish by going over Pike O'Blisco and the race descent to the campsite and along to the NDG.....a fanstastic day out......great weather and good company......thanks Clapham Chasers !

River / canal run - Friday 20th January 2017

An early start, meeting in Chester but make it back by lunchtime and have a steady run from Natland; along the river and back along the canal, a four legged sweetie with us too.

Monday 16 January 2017

Scar Run - Monday 16th January 2017

I head out after work for a run; from Natland, along river to Sedgwick, Strickland, Sizergh, Brigsteer Woods, Helsington, Scar, Prizet and back to Natland. About 11 miles.

Sunday 15 January 2017

Potter Fell Walk / Sadgill Ride - Sunday 15th January 2017

So now that I'm a rambler, I go for a ramble in the rain. From Staveley, along river, up to Potter Tarn and then Potter Fell; I shouldn't mock, it's actually a really enjoyable walk.

Then in the afternoon I get out on my bike, to Sadgill and back from home. The late afternoon sunlight is amazing, shards across the fells :-) Just over 20 miles and plenty of kudos :-)

Scar Run - Saturday 14th January 2017

A beautiful day, and I get out for a run after dark ! 4 miles on the Scar, but still good.

River / canal run - Friday 13th January 2017

After a chilly and snowy night, the ground has thawed and its muddy. A good run around the usual loop, needed some fresh air.

Thursday 12 January 2017

Circuits - Thursday 12th January 2017

Meet with CS at lunchtime for a 2:1 circuits session. Boy was that hard work, but I'll be back next week for more.

Wednesday 11 January 2017

Training - Wednesday 11th January 2017

It's a cold, blowy night.  I head to training, 6 hard reps on the golf course; have felt worse !

Tuesday 10 January 2017

Potter Tarn - Tuesday 10th January 2017

I head out with Russell early evening; from Staveley, along river, up to Potter Tarn and back down usual way - out for just under an hour - a good run, thanks for the company Russ.

London....and it's a tube strike - Monday 9th January 2017

I leave home at 6am and arrive home at 10pm, a long day in London, tube strike does not help !

Sunday 8 January 2017

Feel like a tourist - Sunday 8th January 2017

A walk from Ambleside, over Loughrigg, into Grasmere for lunch and back along the Coffin route and through Rydal Park.....may be I should get some red socks and join the RA ?! But actually this made a lot of sense today, hopefully back to it next weekend.

Saturday 7 January 2017

A walk and a ride - Saturday 7th January 2017

Starting to feel better, but decided a walk would be more sensible than a run. Head out from Staveley,  along river and then up to Potter Tarn.  A damp misty day but good to get out; coffee and toast in Wilfs goes down well.

A bit later I head out on bike from home, to Sadgill and back; the new Genesis is a beaut :-)

Friday 6 January 2017

Not happening..... Friday 6th January 2017

"Your body can't fight infection when under exertion".......so another day passes :-(

Thursday 5 January 2017

Hopefully run tomorrow..... Thursday 5th January 2017

I don't get why I am so prone to colds and infections.....maybe I exercise too much, drink too little, sleep too well and eat too healthily ?!?!

Wednesday 4 January 2017

Need another rest..... Wednesday 4th January 2017

Think I overdid it at the weekend, got a bit chilly after both races and paying the price for it now :-(

Monday 2 January 2017

Bob Gaham Leg 1 - Monday 2nd January 2017

Legs a bit tired after racing the last two days, but it's a glorious day, far too good to waste. So KA and I head to Keswick and run the first leg of the BG. It's a cold day, clear sky and bright sunshine, plus a dusting of snow and a little ice in places.

The climb up Skiddaw is really hard for me, but the scenery is stunning. V. Cold on the summit with significant windchill, but soon warm again as we drop down Hare Crags and the pull up to Great Calva.

Then down to the Caldew, no buzzing fence today ! A cold crossing and then the steep pull up the back of Blencathra. Again it is cold and windy higher up and a little cloud rolls in - on the plus side we get to see Brocken Spectres.....amazing.

From the summit we head down Blease Fell, an easier and morse direct return to Keswick. It's good running, down through the Blencathra field centre and work our way back to the Cali....tea and then some bait in Keswick.....a very good day out.

Sunday 1 January 2017

Nine Standards Fell Race - Sunday 1st January 2017

As is tradition, I head to Kirkby Stephen for the Nine Standards Fell Race; there's a lot to dislike about this race but actually I really like it.

It's a glorious day, cool on the tops, breezy and a dusting of snow, but also very muddy. I run ok, just a minute slower than last year, I'll settle for that.

I'm 44th out of 156, 1:09:10.
