Arnside Ride - Saturday 24th August 2013

The day doesn't go to plan and I eventually get out on my bike early evening. Head off from Natland, through Hincaster, Milnthorpe, Dallam Park, Storth and then.......a puncture ! Hardly an F1 style change but some time later back in the saddle and on to Arnside.

Pass on the fish & chips, that's never easy to do, and back through Sandside, Heversham and Viver. About 23 miles and a pleasant ride out.

River / canal run - Friday 23rd August 2013

Head out mid-afternoon from the office for a run along the river path to Natland and back along the canal - a warm and humid run and it takes a while to cool down before I can shower and resume work !

Staveley Ride - Thursday 22nd August 2013

In a rush tonight but manage a quick Burneside / Staveley / Bowston / Burneside route, not done this loop for a long time.

It's a beautiful evening and a joy to be out but need to get home, showered and to Physio.

Thursday 22 August 2013

Training - Wednesday 21st August 2013

A downhill training session tonight. The early rain has cleared and it leaves a warm, muggy night with plenty of unwelcome flies.

At the far end, we do 7 downhill, flat-out reps and run back up to the top as recovery (!) after each one. This all hurts but does me good and is the sort of training that I need.

Shipman Knotts - Tuesday 20th August 2013

So it's Russ Shipman Knotts race tonight, I have offered to help and am appointed as summit marshal, that's fine by me.

We usually flag the route but this year Russ leaves me to just deploy the odd flag or two (I manged three !) in strategic places. The weather is ok, but potentially a little cool and breezy on the summit so I go prepared.

I'm at the summit in good time, it is cool and breezy and I wrap up......primaloft smock, waterproof, hat & gloves and buff !

I soon see the race start in the far distance and a line of runners head out across the lower slopes. It's not that long before Tom appears, good to see a Helm runner in the lead and go on to win.

50 runners in total, so a great turn-out, I note their numbers on the sheet which Russ has provided. Lots of familiar faces and I try to give encourage to all. but as the last few appear and I note them down I make it 52 runners...bizarre, but at least more rather than less so I am confident in being able to head back down.

I run down with Anna, and, somehow, we appear in front of Dave R (!). I stop at the fell gate and then have a steady run down with Ali, letting Dave and Anna battle it out.

A great evening out, well done to Russ in his meticulous organising and to Christine at Maggs Howe for the fantastic tea and cakes. Finish the evening off in the Eagle & Child.

Training - Monday 19th August 2013

No Shaun tonight so Billy is the man. Not the longest of sessions but I work hard and enjoy.

Sunday 18 August 2013

Arnside Ride - Sunday 18th August 2013

Head out from Natland to Arnside but add in the extra Silverdale loop. Quick tea and cake stop in Arnside before heading home with the wind behind me. A 30 mile loop and better weather than I had enjoyed (no, endured ,) yesterday !

Howtown Fell Race - Saturday 17th August 2013

What a day - as wet as last year's Great Lakes fell race and as windy as last year's Buttermere / Sailbeck race and it's still August !

This is a low key race and, this year, a Helm Hill Club Championship race; I'm the only Helm runner at the race but these will be hard won points !

The rain is incessant as the race starts and I do not climb well to the first checkpoint on Loadpot Hill. The race heads south along the line of the Roman Road and, today, into the wind. Conditions are not  good and, having been on these fells last week, I know that checkpoint 2, High Raise, is just East of the main path. I have my map, protected in an Ortlieb case and attached to my jacket pocket, at the ready and used it !

I cut off the Roman Road at just the right point (my plan was to note the kink in the fence line, just by a steep Ghyll that cuts in on the right, continue up the main path from this point until it levels and then turn 90o left) and soon see the summit and the Marshall sensibly tucked in the small stone windbreak, a Bowland lad just behind follows me in but runners who I had seen ahead miss the summit !

I then get a good contour line which cuts right of Rampsgill Head and joins the main path just where a path descends from The Knott - spot on ! Then good running, now with he wind behind or to the side to Angle Tarn and then Boredale Hause. The weather has relented a little and I dig deep on the climb to checkpoint 3 on Place Fell.

There were some comments on Fellrunner forum last week about the best descent route from here to the valley; I had committed these to memory and then recalled them precisely. Right of High Dodd and then soon after zig-zag down to the right and cross the river (by the wee stone bridge today rather than the adjacent ford !).

Then a bit of road running to St Peter's church, and time to down a gel, before the sting in the tail, Hallin Fell; but the gel kicks in and I climb this small fell well, it's then all downhill to the finish at the Bobbin Mill, a familiar place to me as it was a checkpoint on the UTLD 50 & 100.

I finish in just over 2:56 and am placed 13th; I am pleased with this, this came down to careful and accurate navigation and strong running when the conditions got tough; perhaps the steady initial climb made sense.  I must have picked up at least a dozen or so places, and not by directly overtaking other runners, by accurately locating the High Raise checkpoint.

Hot, sweet tea and great cakes round off an epic race. I am totally soaked and, sensibly, have the camper with me today (although this is less capable of getting out of a muddy field than the Quattro !).

There is a lot of chatter on the forum about High Raise !

What a great race, would be good to run it again, hopefully in better conditions.

Lyth Valley Ride - Friday 16th August 2013

Head straight to Natland after work and head out on bike around usual Lyth Valley route; an uneventful ride.

River / Canal run - Thursday 15th August 2013

A wet and miserable evening, head out on the usual loop. I get very wet and finish, unexpected, in the dark.....need to find my headtorch soon.....but it's still August !

Red Screes - Wednesday 14th August 2013

Need to get some training in for the Ben Nevis race so head to Red Screes for some hill reps......x 3 !

The second rep was my quickest (first was a warm-up and third a warm-down), up in 17:45 and down in 10; but a wet and misty evening so more of a chore than a pleasure.

Rest day - Tuesday 13th August 2013

Much needed.

Training - Monday 12th August 2013

Shouldn't have gone tonight, for lots of reasons.

JNC Recce - Sunday 11th August 2013

Had not intended to run today but late afternoon I accept an invitation to recce the first stage of the Joss Naylor Challenge. It is windy and I expect rain but this holds off until the last 15 minutes !

It is steady running from Pooley Bridge to Arthur's Pike and then on to Loadpot Hill and Wether Hill. There is little descent between these fells, they just gradually get higher the further south the ridge leads. There are one or two intervening summits but the next main top is High Raise, just a little off the Roman Road. From here a contour leads to Kidsty Pike and then Rampsgill Head.

Soon after we join the main path that leads onto High Street and now familiar IHR route to Thornthwaite Beacon and then Stony Cove Pike. Pike How is a very minor top on the way to Ravens Edge, this would need concentration if the mist was down.

It was at about this point that the rain started heavy too, so a quick dash to Kirkstone and my car, just wish I had the camper there, it would be so much easier to get changed and make coffee in than the back of my car !

So out for 3:10, just about on schedule and including some time looking at the map and checking various lines.

Turner Landscape Fell Race - Saturday 10th August 2013

A race that I had hoped to run last year when it was a Club Championship race but due to illness (rare for me) gave it a miss. This year it is a FRA Championship race, prefer to avoid these as too many people but wanting to run this route gets the better of me.

A few low clouds and a brief shower when I get to Turner Hall Farm but this soon clears and by 12pm, when the race starts, it clears and there is patchy sun.  I start steady and deliberately do not get dragged along with faster runners. The track to Seathwaite Tarn goes on for ever and it is good to get on the trod that leads to Grey Friar.

I have Brain and Billy on my shoulder but do not get distracted and concentrate on my own race. On to Swirl How and then a good fast line over Brim Fell to the Old Man of Coniston.  I descend poorly but climb well to Dow Crag. Ben passes me and enjoy the rough running to cross the Walna Scar track.  I hang in and run well out to White Pike and, for once, enjoy the grassy descent to the fell gate and tricky flagged descent to the finish.

I'm never going to do well in a FRA Championship race, well not in terms of position, but am pleased with how I run and my time of 1:44:02.

River / Canal Run - Friday 9th August 2013

Head out after work along river to Hawes Bridge and back along canal in to Levens Park; I put in a little extra distance and make it 8 miles but all at a steady pace as racing tomorrow.

Arnside Ride - Thursday 8th August 2013

Usual route from Natland, no time for fish & chips tonight though ! The evenings are getting cooler and it's starting to get darker noticeably earlier - the corner has been turned :-(

Training - Wednesday 7th August 2013

A dry and warm night on the Helm. We again head off on a fartlek session, through the fields at the back of the Helm.

We are apparently taking it steady tonight as many of us are racing on Saturday - back to it next week says Billy....can't wait !

Day off - Tuesday 6th August 2013

No run or ride today, instead have a sports massage - thanks John.

Monday 5 August 2013

Training - Monday 5th August 2013

After almost 24 hours of persistent and heavy rain, the sky clears and we have a dry evening.

The running goes ok but not a great evening.

Sunday 4 August 2013

Fairfield Horseshoe - Sunday 4th August 2013

Another day when I expect to get wet but stay dry. Out with Russ and Kath, one of my favourite routes, the Fairfield Horseshoe. A cool breeze on the summit but otherwise a reasonable day.

Good to be out, again, and enjoy a great route with good friends.

Langdale Horseshoe Race Route Recce - Saturday 4th August 2013

So Kath and I head to Langdale for a recce of the Langdale Horseshoe, not sure if either of us will run the race but still a good route to have a fell run on.

The cloud is down on the Crinkles and dark clouds loom; I expect it to be windy (correct) and for us to get wet at some point (incorrect). From the ODG we run along the track towards the NDG and then cut up the left hand side of Stickle Ghyll to Stickle Tarn. Heading East around the tarn we reach the stream crossing (CP 1), and climb the path towards Pavey Ark; as the ground starts to level we cut right to CP 2 on the summit of Thuncar Knott.

Then on a bearing to the next checkpoint is at Esk Hause, some of this on the Bob Graham route and then some on the Old County Tops route. We are running well and despite the blustery conditions we stay below the cloud and dry. As we approach Esk Hause we realise that we might see some of the Borrowdale fell race, we do.....we get there just after Ricky Lightfoot, leading the race, had gone through; we stay around for a few minutes to see the chasing pack of 4 runners, led by Jebby.

We then get back to our route, and double back below Esk Pike on a tricky trod, but soon at Ore Gap and into the cloud. We take it cautiously but pick up the grassy line leading to the summit. Then down to Three Tarns and again do reasonably well to get an line skirting the first few Crinkle summits and the climb directly to Top 5, another checkpoint.

It can be tricky here, we are still in the cloud but I lead us towards the Bad Step and get a good little trod around this......should have led a young couple on this as 'she' did not like descending the Step ! Good running from here leads us to Red Tarn and the last climb to the summit of Blisco. Again good running on race lines leads us to the cattle grid near Blea Tarn and then an easy descent, through the campsite and road back to the ODG.

A great route, 14 miles, 4,500' of ascent and a good day out.

Saturday 3 August 2013

River / canal run - Friday 2nd August 2013

Not run this lunchtime loop for a while, actually since I got chased by a cow !

No such excitement today, all very boring in comparison. But legs are very stiff although the run does loosen them up a bit.

Chores to do ! - Thursday 1st August 2013

No time for a run or ride today, jobs to do around the house.

Training - Wednesday 31st July 2013

A wet night on the Helm; 5 reps at the back of the Helm; we concentrate on fast flat running and then into a big climb and a steady descent. Hard work and, again, my legs go very tight later.

Lyth Valley and then Arnside ride...chips but no fish ! - Tuesday 30th July 2013

Head out early evening on Lyth Valley loop and then straight in to the Arnside loop. Make it to the fish and chip shop at 8:20, they close at 8:00 ! But they still serve me chips....all is not lost.

Make it back just before dark, need to think about putting lights back on my bike.

Training - Monday 29th July 2013

A big turnout tonight, new faces from other clubs ! Another hard session and I suffer later on for this, legs go very tight.

Lyth Valley Ride x 2 - Sunday 28th July 2013

The weather clears during the day and I head on my bike in the afternoon for a slightly extend Lyth Valley loop from Natland; stop off at Sizergh Castle on the way back for coffee and cake.

Then later, head out again from Natland around the Lyth Valley route; get caught in a heavy downpour just as I come back from Sedgwick; soaked and nearly dark when I get back to Natland.

Old Crown Round - Saturday 27th July 2013

So having decided not to run the UTLD 50 which is taking palce today, Kath and I decide to enter the Old Crown Round which also happens to be a Club Championship race.

The style of this race feels relaxed, registration is at the Old Crown pub in Hesket Newmarket and the start time is relaxed and we can set-off anytime from 9am. It's forecast to be a hot day and we look forward to the tipple of beer on each summit (the route visits various North Lakes summits, each of which has a beer brewed after it's name by the Old Crown brewery)....this is much more sensible than running 50 miles and having High 5 at each checkpoint !

But it is not to be underestimated, about 24 miles and over 7,000' of ascent.and some of the terrain is pathless and tussocky.  We set off at a good pace up the lane and onto the fells. I choose a higher line than most and this is useful. As we all set-off at different times it is difficult to tell how we are doing but it is to be a relaxed day and one to enjoy.

The first summit is Carrock Fell, a great summit and home to a Roman Fort; we both sample the Carrock Fell beer, very good but a bit early in the day and in the race to be drinking too much beer ! The line of descent from here is not overly clear and there is lot of bracken to negotiate before dropping to the River Caldew.

We then climb steeply, skirting Bowscale Fell and Bannerdale Crags to then climb Foule Crags and then Blencathra, the second checkpoint and a taster of the Blencathra beer ! The checkpoint staff are very friendly and welcoming (perhaps they too have been drinking the beer !).

From here I take a different line to most but I think this proves to be good; we pass the Cloven Stone and drop to again cross the river and join the track to Skiddaw House Youth Hostel; not a checkpoint but a refreshment stop - tea this time....wot no beer !

Then West, over Sale How to climb Skiddaw and again friendly marshalls pouring us beer, no half measures by these guys ! Then familiar BG route, over Hare Crag and onto Great Calva. The next section is familiar to me as Russ and I competed in the Rab MM over this ground some years ago.  Onto the Knott and, shock, horror, no beer - the quad bike delivering this took a tumble as did the beer, fortunately the driver was uninjured but the beer did not fare so well :-(

Fast running leads from here to Hike Pike and and more beer, and then Kath, in her usual style, picks
up the pace considerable for the run to the finish; I hang in there and navigate well. We, as usual, go into overtaking mode and finish in good style.

the heat then hits us once we stop and we are desperate to find a river to cool down in and wash off; unfortunately the local river is not flowing, such as the weather has been lately, so we are lucky to find an obliging local who lends us her hose......!!

there is some ambiguity over the timing and results but, undisputed, Kath is first lady and sets a new ladies records - very impressive.

Lyth Valley Ride - Friday 26th July 2013

Head out after work from Natland around usual Lyth Valley route. Bike is repaired and going well, a new headset ! A glorious evening and I think of the runners setting off on the Lakeland 100.

Rest day - Thursday 25th July 2013

No run or ride today.

Training - Wednesday 24th July 2013

Back to the Helm, not been here for a while either. Only 4 of us tonight, Billy wants a steady night because of the Blisco race on Saturday, Craig because of the Lakeland 50 and Ben and I are happy to go with this.

Was due to be a fartlek session through the rolling farmland at the back of the Helm but, actually, we just went for a run through this area; a good session though.

Exercise bike - Tuesday 23rd July 2013

Staying overnight in Liverpool, I hit the Crowne Plaza's gym and hate it !

Training - Monday 22nd July 2013

Back to it, not been here for a while and it's going to hurt !

And it does, a warm night and I work hard...I also suffer !

Arnside Ride - Sunday 21st July 2013

Craig and I head out on bikes, we do the Arnside loop but add in Silverdale too. Another hot day and glorious weather.  A quick stop for coffee and cake in Arnside and back to town and the tough climb back up Windermere Road.

A good ride out and clock up 35 miles.

Turner Landscape Recce - Saturday 20th July 2013

So this race is coming up in a few weeks time and a recce seems like a good idea.

The roads will be busy and so to cut journey time KA and I head over to Coniston and decide to join the route by running up the Walna Scar Road.

From the top of this, we cut left (South) on a race trod to the summit of White Pike (the penultimate checkpoint in the race). Then we cut back and descended to where the Walna Scar passes through a gate at the lower fell wall. We can't recce the last leg as this is over private land (but will of course be permitted on race day), so head a little further down the Walna Scar to join the outward race route.

We then follow a track to Seathwaite Tarn. It is a hot day and we are both carrying far too little water, we make the mistake of not refilling at the outflow of the tarn; this is a big mistake ! We easily pick up the trod from the tarn and climb to the ridge and then the summit of Grey Friar.

Then on to Swirl How, Brim Fell and Coniston Old Man, we are both gasping for a drink ! Round to Dow Crag and we try to pick a good line to bypass Brown Pike to rejoin the Walna Scar. The race route is a cracker and I'm looking forward to it.

We head back down the Walna Scar and manage to drink from a beck, bliss ! Back to the car and then to Ambleside for fish & chips. A good afternoon out.
