Hartfell Horseshoe - Sunday 21st July 2019

A trip north of the border for KA and I; just outside Moffat we take part in this low-key race. Slightly different format, you choose your start time, slower runners early, fast late and us in the middle - it works, every finishes close to each other and no waiting around for prizes.

It’s a great wee race, a classic horseshoe, mainly on grass, fast running and the occasional step descent / ascent. A good day out and KA in the prizes :-).

Ride - Saturday 20th July 2019

An afternoon ride to Silverdale and Arnside, coffee and cake obligatory. 44km / 530m ascent.

Friday 19 July 2019

Swim - Friday 19th July 2019

An early morning swim, good for the body and the mind.

A good day out - Thursday 18th July 2019

But it is work.......honestly ! :-)

Day off - Wednesday 17th July 2019

A much needed rest day, just the second part of my injury prevention course.

Circuits, Yoga & Pilates - Tuesday 16th July 2019

A very tough circuit session, then yoga and finish off with Pilates.

Swim & Farleton Social Run - Monday 15th July 2019

An early swim in the hope it will do my legs good, not so sure it works but still an enjoyable way to start the day.

In the evening I then join Ruth’s Monday night off-road social run for a steady outing over Farleton Knot. I say steady, it certainly wasn’t slow and my legs were screaming out after Wasdale ! But it’s a glorious evening and good company. Just over 7 miles, more than enough for me.

Sunday 14 July 2019

Silverdale Ride - Sunday 14th July 2019

Legs tired today, but I manage 44km on the bike; Silverdale loop, including stop at Wolf House Gallery for tea and cake.

Wasdale Fell Race - Saturday 13th July 2019

This is a tough one, 21 miles and 9,000’ climb, warm day too.

We get round, steady and then get stronger. 6:25:50, 100th.

Swim - Friday 12th July 2019

A lot to do before work, including a relaxing swim.

Circuits - Thursday 11th July 2019

A tough 1-2-1 session.

First of a two-part training course at Alpkit........foam rollering, painful !

Tuesday 9 July 2019

Citywire 10k - Tuesday 9th July 2019

Second year of representing Rathbones in the annual Citywire Charity 10k Race in Regent’s Park, London. Hot, but not scorching like last year, but hard work and a slow time of around 42:30. Still recovering from tough weekend and generally most people a little slower than they expected.....perhaps it’s a bit over 10k ? Or, in my case, lack of hills !

However, think I ran faster to catch my train, only seconds to spare !!

Yoga & Swim - Monday 8th July 2019

Early yoga, lunch swim and then late afternoon train to London.

SLMM - Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th July 2019

Craig and I race in Carrock class this year, one shorter than last year which almost broke us !! Started near Tebay so only a short journey. Day 1 is longer and hotter than we expect, out for almost 7 hours and over 20 miles of hard terrain. Overnight is glorious and just along from Cautley. We finish day one in 10th and, possibly, 1st Male Vets.

Early chasing start for us on day 2, but fortunately a much shorter day and not as hot. We pick up two places, 9th on day 2 and moves us to 8th overall, again possibly 1st  Male Vets.

A good weekend, with good company.

Circuits - Friday 5th July 2019

1-2-1 today, hard session.

Swim / Yoga / Race - Thursday 4th July 2019

Early morning swim, office yoga and then to Hoad Hill fell race. Almost twice the distance as last year, they’ve added in an extra loop. KA and I ran well; a good evening.

Reston Scar Scamper - Wednesday 3rd July 2019

Late decision, glorious evening, head to Staveley along with one thousand other Helm runners for a scamper around Reston Scar. Not quick but felt like I had a good race; spot prize too, for the longest travel to race......had just come back from London :-).

Head out from home; Brigsteer, Levens, Brigsteer, Underbarrow, Crook, Staveley, Bowston and home. Felt good.

Eskdale Elevation - Saturday 13th April 2019

Like this race, KA and I head over the passes to Boot. It’s a ‘Long’ race, but one of the shorter. Two big climbs, Whinn Rigg and then Scafell, with a long run back to Boot; good conditions and a pleasant day out.

Circuits / Run / Pilates - Tuesday 9th April 2019

Normal Tuesday madness resumes !

Swim - Monday 8th April 2019

Just an early evening swim for me today.

Latrigg Walk & ride - Sunday 7th April 2019

I head to Keswick, an early morning walk up Latrigg; going up was ok, but coming down was agony ! Then an afternoon ride from home: Brigsteer, Underbarrow, Crook, Staveley, Bowston, home.

Howgill Race - Saturday 6th April 2019

A tough one, as expected, but felt good. Ran with KA, strong team. The only disappointment was the Three Hares being closed so no post race feast :-( Oh, and sunburn !

Sunday 7 April 2019

I manage a 5km tempo run and then swim before work.

Rest day - Thursday 4th April 2019

A Mapdec bike session at lunchtime and then a tempo 4/5 mile run in the evening.

Cirucits, yoga and then to Sedbergh for a run around the Carnethy Route; only bother with half the Winder climb (but the bit we wanted to recce) as the snow sets in !!

Swim & ride - Monday 1st April 2019

An early morning swim and then a quick ride around the Lyth Valley loop after work.

Coledale Horseshoe Race Route - Sunday 31st March 2019

KA and I head to Braithwaite for a steady run around the race route; a glorious day to be out on Grisedale Pike, Crag Hill, Sail and Barrow. Then coffee and very delicious cake in Keswick.

Ride - Saturday 30th March 2019

I get out for a longer ride in the afternoon. From Natland, Crosscrake, Viver, Milnthorpe, Dallam, Storth, Silverdale, Wolf House Gallery for coffee & cake, Arnside, Sandside, Heversham, Hincaster, Sedgwick and back to Natland. 27.5 miles.

Saturday 30 March 2019

Swim - Friday 29th March 2019

My usual Friday morning splash.

Ride - Thursday 28th March 2019

Clocks not changed yet but still enough light for an after work ride. I meet with KA and we head through Natland to Crosscrake, Viver, Hincaster, Sedgwick and back to Natland. Just over 10 miles, very pleasant.

Helm Training - Wednesday 27th March 2019

Not keen on Aynma Road loops later on, prefer to run in the light, off road and uphill. So I have my own session on the Helm; the big climb at the back x 5, and then the big climb at the front x 3.

That makes me feel a whole lot worse !

Yoga, Circuits, Pilates & Spin - Tuesday 26th March 2019

Hardly surprising that I can’t shake off this cold !!

Temp Road Run - Monday 25th March 2019

Mind willing, body less so.......a 7 mile tempo road run with KA; from Prizet, Natland, Helm, Barrows Green, Crosscrake, Natland and back to Prizet.

Sunday 24 March 2019

Wetherlam - Sunday 24th March 2019

A colder and windier day, KA and I head over to Coniston for, possibly, the Coniston fell race route.

We get to the summit of Wetherlam, it’s cold and windy and after yesterday’s race and our both having colds, we decide to drop towards Tilberthwaite and then back over to Coppermine valley. Then lunch in the village. That’s enough for today.

Middle Fell Race - Saturday 23rd March 2019

KA and I head over to Nether Wasdale to race Middle Fell, which we last did in 2015.

A beautiful day and stunning backdrop to this small Lakeland village. Just a small field, that’s good (and no Helm bus, that’s even more good) and good atmosphere. Out across fields to Joss’s house at Greenside and then a steep pull up to the summit at 582m. Then back the way we came. We finish in about 1:14 and both pick up category win prizes, mine slightly belatedly ! A good day out.

Swim and short run - Friday 22nd March 2019

Swim before work and then a short run to collect camper.

Short ride - Thursday 21st March 2019

Need to drop camper at garage, short ride home. That’s it’s, still feel rubbish.

Full of Cold - Wednesday 20th March 2019

Give everything a miss today, apart from work !

Pilates & Spin - Tuesday 19th March 2019

Feel even more rubbish, give circuits a miss and should have given Pilates and Spin a miss too !!

All work, no play - Monday 18th March 2019

A long day in London and feel rubbish.

Stretton Hills - Sunday 17th March 2019

KA and I head down to Church Stretton to race Strettton Hills, one of the English Champs race.

A cracking wee route, short hard climbs and good running and descents in between; even manage to avoid the heavy snow / sleet / hail shower.

A good day out.

Dip & Turbo - Saturday 16th March 2019

A very wet day, so a dip in Windermere doesn’t make me any wetter ! Then just 30 mins on the turbo.

Swim - Friday 15th March 2019

A quick swim before work.

Scar Run - Thursday 14th March 2019

A short run on Scar in the evening, very enjoyable.

Alternative Training Session - Wednesday 13th March 2019

KA and I head out for a road session, 1 minute hard intervals. From Prizet, Natland. round back of Helm and back through Crosscrake and Natland. Hard work but rewarding.

Circuits / Pilates / Spin - Tuesday 12th March 2019

The usual Tuesday trio !

Beetham Run - Monday 11th March 2019

A new route, from Milnthorpe through Dallam Park and into Beetham woods; a good run and a good evening.

Sunday 10 March 2019

Swim & Ambleside Loop - Sunday 10th March 2019

Swim first thing.

Then we manage to miss the worst of the hail, sleet and snow. From Ambleside, over the lower slopes of Loughrigg, around Loughrigg Tarn, down to Elterwater, along for Skelwith, up the hill and along the river back to Ambleside; just under 9 miles.

Black Combe Fell Race - Saturday 9th March 2019

Like this race and had recce’d it last weekend.....I have, like many others, been know to go astray on this one ! A wet morning but forecast to improve, and it did. I run with KA, we climb well, navigate well and run well. 1:50, I’ll settle for that today.

Swim - Friday 8th March 2019

I should have run but the weather not great so settled for a swim at lunchtime.

Turbo - Thursday 7th March 2019

Just manage 30 mins on turbo.

10k Road - Wednesday 6th March 2019

Working this evening so head out late afternoon for a 10km road run from the office, it was a wet one !

Tuesday 5 March 2019

Circuits & Spin - Tuesday 5th March 2019

Wot no Pilates !!!

Swim - Monday 4th March 2019

Back at work and tired today, just an easy swim at lunchtime.

Black Combe Recce - Sunday 3rd March 2019

Back to Blighty and some stormy weather forecast. However I make it out before it arrives, a quick recce of Black Combe, a race that always requires a recce !!!

10k Seafront Run - Saturday 2nd March 2019

So no biking today, a late afternoon flight so time for a 10k run to Meloneras and back, hard work.

Day 6: Serinity climb and back to Maspalomas - Friday 1st March 2019

We ride back out of Puerto de Morgan and then the fabulous and aptly named Serenity climb. Amazing views and again hard work. But from the top it’s all downhill, back to Soria and then to the coast ride. Some very fast drafting on the flat, 11km covered at an average close to 50kph.

Late lunch at Meloneras and then a short ride back to our hotel and bike hire shop.

58.1km / 1283m / 3hrs 8mins.

Day 5: Along the coast & a tough climb - Thursday 28th February 2019

So today we ride along the jagged west coast, awesome views out to sea and as far as Tiede on Tenerife. After a coffee stop in El Risco we then have about 4km through a new tunnel, built following major rock fall a few years earlier. Then a great descent to La Alden de San Nicolás.

From here it’s a 684m climb to Mirador de Tasartice......that was a tough one. Then a long descent, with lunch stop, to our hotel at Puerto de Morgan.....and a well earned ice cream.

64.1km / 1679m / 3hrs 25mins.

Day 4: Back to the coast - Wednesday 27th February 2019

So more down than up today and some very pleasant riding. Back up to Cruz Grande, Ayacata, Tejeda, lunch in Artenara and then the long descent to Agaete and our very comfortable hotel by the sea. Followed by a dip in the chilly Atlantic rock pools.

75.7km / 1721m / 4hrs 5mins.

Monday 4 March 2019

Day 3: An easier day - Tuesday 26th February 2019

Just a loop today, but to the highest point of the island. An steady climb to Cruz Grande and then along to Ayacata for coffee and cake. It’s then all uphill, passing Roque Nublo, to Pico de las Nieves, 1950m above sea level.

Then a big descent and big climb brings us to our lunch stop at Paso Cruz de Tejeda. More climb for here or rejoin the loop and back to Ayacata, Cruz Grande and San Bartolomé and our hotel. Just in time for some serious massage treatment, my mid-trip treat.

67.5km / 2240m / 4hrs 26 mins.

Day 2: The tough one - Monday 25th February 2019

We leave Maspalomas and head inland, an initial 500m climb to Mirador Fataga. We break for coffee in Fataga before another tough climb at about 950m. Just a banana stop here, on past our hotel and down to San Bartolomé and Santa Lucia. From here a 35k loop, almost down to sea level before a very late lunch back in Santa Lucia. From there a short climb back up to San Bartolomé and our fantastic hotel at Las Tirajana. A hot and tiring day.

82.8km / 2576m / 4hrs 59 mins.

Day 1 on the bike - Sunday 24th February 2019

We pick up our hire bikes at Freemotion and head along the coast to El Moral and then inland and the first big climb of the trip to Soria, 623m. Here we have lunch and then it’s quicker rider back to the resort for a coffee.

71.2km / 1313m / 3hr 34 mins.

Gran Canaria - Saturday 23rd February 2019

Early start and heading to GC for a KE bike holiday. I arrive in Maspalomas by mid-afternoon and stretch my legs on a quick 5km run to the beach and back.

Sunday 17 February 2019

Coniston Race Route - Sunday 17th February 2019

Looks can be deceiving, a bright mild start to the day at home but by half way up Wetherlam I’m in the mist, it’s cold, windy and at times wet :-(. But on I go following the race route. I don’t get the exact line from the summit but I do lower down. Not fast but strong on the climbs.

Park (Run) & Ride - Saturday 16th February 2019

An early start and to Whinlatter for Park Run; this is a toughie, especially with a damaged hamstring, maybe that’s explains the slow time; but glad I went, came 10th.

Then from Keswick, after breakfast, a ride through Portinscale Stair and over Newlands Pass to Buttermere, back via Lorton, Whinlatter Pass, Braithwaite and Portinscale. About 32k and plenty of climb.

Swim - Friday 15th February 2019

A swim before work, a good way to start the day.

Circuits, Pilates & Spin - Tuesday 12th February 2019

Another easy Tuesday !!!

Training - Monday 11th February 2019

Well not been here for a while; I can’t say I enjoyed it but it must be good for my fitness and speed.

Howgill Trail Race Route - Sunday 10th February 2019

A better day, at least not as windy now that (storm) Erik has passed. KA and I head out on the Howgill Half Marathon trail race route; all goes well on the run but we the have to settle for pies form the Spar as the Three Hares was closed......very disappointing !

Not Carnethy - Saturday 9th February 2019

We decide against Carnethy, more than one reason but not least because there was a threat of it being cancelled. Instead KA and I head over to Ambleside for a run over Loughrigg, into Grasmere, to White Moss and back over to Todd Crag and Lily tarn; about 10 miles.

London....all work, no play - Thursday 7th & Friday 8th February 2019

Just 30 mins on turbo this evening.

An early start and chilly morning. Keswick Park Run, I finish 7th in 20:20; a little off my best but I’m ok with that.

Swim - Friday 18th January 2019

An early morning swim session, a good way to start the day.

An early swim and then lunch at Sizergh Farm. Later I head out from Staveley for a 25k run in the trails. A made up as I went along route, but roughly Skeggles, Sadgill, Kentmere, Potter Fell Road and back to Staveley. Hard going.

Grizedale Mountain Biking - Saturday 12th January 2019

A gloomy day, we head to High Cross for mountain biking on the forest tracks in and around Grizedale. About 18 miles, with a hot chocolate break at the Visitor Centre. V. muddy, in fact I couldn’t believe just how much muddy kit I had to sort when I got home; but good fun and finished off with a late lunch at Kysty’s.

5k Tempo run - Friday 11th January 2019

Pushed for time so settle for a faster road 5k rather than a steadier 10k.

Monday 7 January 2019

Run - Monday 7th January 2019

Another gloomy day, but windy and damp too. I head out at lunchtime for run along river to Hawks Bridge and back along canal path.

Sunday 6 January 2019

Ride & swim - Sunday 6th January 2019

A cold and gloomy day; I head out on bike, Sadgill and back, about 20 miles; and then for a swim.

Kielder 10m - Saturday 5th January 2019

Stayed over night in Newcastleton, Scotland and then just a short drive back over the border to Kielder Castle, exactly where I was a year ago.

KA and I again run the Kielder 10m Winter trail race. A great route on forest tracks and single tracks paths, heading out on two separate loops and passing by the castle at the half way point.

No snow this year, but still a chilly day. We run well, 6 minutes or so quicker than last year.

A great race and good overnight trip.
