Day ride to Soria - Sunday 9th March 2014

So after meeting up with the group and collecting hire bikes, we head out from Maspalomas along the coast for 12k. The weather is warm and a little overcast but soon the sky clears and we have glorious sunshine, plus 24c too.

We then turn inland, some easy riding to start with on very smooth roads. A quick snack stop and then the real work begins, a 9km climb.  The gradient is steep but consistent and there are numerous switchbacks, I find the right gear and it feels good. It's worth it, the mountain village of Soria has a wonderful restaurant, Casa Fernando, where we stop for lunch.

Then it's back the way we came, a full on descent but rather any long enough straights to clock a good speed, I settle for 62kph. Then back along the coast to Maspalomas. 69km in total and about 1120m of climb.

The "tour" starts tomorrow so best I get an early night.

Heading to warmer climes - Saturday 8th March 2014

So an early start and heading to Gran Canaria for a cycle holiday - actually "Tour de Gran Canaria" as the trip is called.

Friday 7 March 2014

Fairfield Horseshoe - Friday 7th March 2014

Take the afternoon off work and head over to Ambleside for a run around the Horseshoe. After the heavy overnight rain, I am amazed at how the sky has cleared.  Cool and breezy but fantastic views and dry, in places, underfoot.

Decide to also take in Red Screes to add a little more distance and climb. A great run out and then beer and tapas at the Hawkshead Brewery.

Rest day - Thursday 6th March 2014

Had hoped to get out for a quick run at lunch but work gets in the way so it becomes a rest day.

Training - Wednesday 5th March 2014

Billy away so Shaun is leading the session tonight. Up to golf course and then a quick rep in one area. followed by a warm-up rep and the five reps in a different area, these ones are much longer. Then back to the first area for another rep and a half......come back soon Billy !

Pilates - Tuesday 4th March 2014

Another good session, hopefully will start to see the benefit of this in my running.

Scar Run - Monday 3rd March 2014

Head out at lunchtime and park at Helsington church. Then a run on the Scar, glorious weather and good to be out. About 6 miles.

Sunday 2 March 2014

Staveley Ride - Sunday 2nd March 2014

A dull day, but at least dry at the start. I head out from home, same route as last week.  Across Queens Road to Brigsteer Road and the. Down to the village. However this week my brakes are worse, nothing on the front and about 20% on the back; I wuss out and walk the last bit of steep downhill into Brigsteer, need to get this sorted.

Then to Underbarrow, Crook and Staveley, it turns a bit wet but, this week I am not chilled so decide to stop at Wilf's for a full cooked breakfast.  The head home with a very full stomach.

LDWA Lakeland Derwent Water Amble - Saturday 1st March 2014

It might only be an amble, but it is a long one....officially 22 miles but we measure closer to 24 ! On the drive to Braithwaite we enter a snow shower or two, wonder how the day will turnout.

As usual with these events, the registration and start is all very relaxed. Runners are due to set off at 9:30 but as it's not timed and no results most people go when ready. Having marked my map by reading through the route description, I realise it is intricate and we could easily go the wrong way; so care required.

Wise words, but in the first two miles we make a minor mistake, it's never going to be critical and just means a few hundred yards extra...as good training ! So once through Swinside we climb Catbells the weather is clear and the views of the snow covered Lakeland fells is stunning. A torturous wet rocky step descent takes us down towards Derwent water and then a long traverse above Grange and eventually past Castle Crag.  Again we need to pay attention to the route, it's incredibly difficult to read the description whilst on the move, it's rocky in most places and where's it not, it's muddy and slippery....this is  clearly why Kath was happy for me to be navigator !  :-)

We then drop down towards Seatoller and North to the first checkpoint at Rosthwaite. We bump I to Nicola, she is walking the route and set off earlier, she is going well. Once we are fed and watered we head off towards Stonethwaite and then a long, gradual climb to Dock Tarn; the scenery is fantastic but the Ricky and muddy path is hard going. We then drop to Watendlath and here the weather closes in and we decide waterproof jackets are necessary.

Then on a permissive path, parallel to Watendlath Beck, through Ashness Wood and then down the road to the second checkpoint at Surprise View. We pass on the Scotch Eggs but tuck into the Mars Bars, flapjack, bananas and squash. Then down the road to Ashness Bridge and a steady climb to Walla Crag, perhaps a new Wainwright for Kath to tick off. The weather improves and we then descend to Keswick, via and up and down of Castle Head.

Through the town and then a reverse of the BG finish to the suspension bridge at Portinscale. Not far now, but the intricate route finding continues before we are back on familiar ground, retracing the outward route back to the finish.

Out for 5 hours and both tired. The prospect of hot showers does not materialise so we settle for a sink and hot water but still good to freshen up. Then into Keswick for a late lunch. Nicola does well, she too completed the long route.

Arthur's Seat - Friday 28th February 2014

This is becoming a tradition, my fourth visit to the annual Threadneedle conference and an opportunity to stay over in my favourite city and have an early morning run to the top of Arthur's Seat; I have managed this every year so far, sometimes easier than others and this is dependant on the quantity of fizz consumed the night before !

This time I do not over do it and with a clear head I set off at 7am, across North Bridge, down the Royal Mile, past the Scottish Parliament buildings and Hollyrood Palace and then off road and up to Arthur's  Seat. It's a stunning morning, cold but fantastically clear, what a great place to be.

The path is icy and a but tricky but the views from the summit are stunning. Head back the same way,  time is against me and all done in 45 minutes. Quick shower, full Scottish breakfast and the. Train home. Only a short stay, perhaps next year I could stay a little longer.

Heading North - Thursday 27th February 2014

Heading to Edinburgh, work related but still a great place to be. No run or ride today but a special early morning run planned for tomorrow.

Training - Wednesday 26th February 2014

Why is it that some weeks it works and others it doesn't ? As you might of guessed this week is the latter. I find it hard from the start, only 5 reps on a familiar route on the golf course but it's just not happening. So frustrating but can't let it get to me; keep plugging away, don't give up and maybe it will come back !

Pilates - Tuesday 25th February 2014

Week 2 of the second set, a good session and seem to keep up with what's going on.....for once !

Potter Tarn - Monday 24th February 2014

Head out from Staveley, same route as a few weeks ago but this time the first in the light. Up through woods and then to Potter Tarn; Headtorch goes on at this point. Then down to and along river, back into the village.

Good to be out and still not missing track training !
