Coniston Fells - Saturday 16th March 2013

Not a great forecast, Russ and I revise plans and head to Coniston rather than to the Northern Lakes. Usual route to Wetherlam, we are soon in soft, wet snow and it is snowing lightly. Visibility is poor as are the light conditions, this makes for difficult navigation as it's difficult to tell what is up, what is down, what is sky and what is the ground !

From the summit, once we had finally agreed we were at the summit, we use the compass to head towards Prison Band. Very confusing, the path is hidden by fresh snow, are we too high or too low, we trust the compass, push on and arrive where we want to be.

We climb well and are soon on Swirl How; it gets easier from here, a gradual descent and then climb Brim Fell and then onto the Old Man. From here we aim for Dow Crag, but again the ground is confusing but no serious problems. Over Dow Crag, onto Brown Pike and then a steady run down the Walna Scar road back to the village.

Coffee and treacle tarts back at the car, just what we need.
