So this race is coming up in a few weeks time and a recce seems like a good idea.
The roads will be busy and so to cut journey time KA and I head over to Coniston and decide to join the route by running up the Walna Scar Road.
From the top of this, we cut left (South) on a race trod to the summit of White Pike (the penultimate checkpoint in the race). Then we cut back and descended to where the Walna Scar passes through a gate at the lower fell wall. We can't recce the last leg as this is over private land (but will of course be permitted on race day), so head a little further down the Walna Scar to join the outward race route.
We then follow a track to Seathwaite Tarn. It is a hot day and we are both carrying far too little water, we make the mistake of not refilling at the outflow of the tarn; this is a big mistake ! We easily pick up the trod from the tarn and climb to the ridge and then the summit of Grey Friar.
Then on to Swirl How, Brim Fell and Coniston Old Man, we are both gasping for a drink ! Round to Dow Crag and we try to pick a good line to bypass Brown Pike to rejoin the Walna Scar. The race route is a cracker and I'm looking forward to it.
We head back down the Walna Scar and manage to drink from a beck, bliss ! Back to the car and then to Ambleside for fish & chips. A good afternoon out.
